03:51<drzacek>okay, I'm trying to revert to a working state, don't even want to use the interrupt.h for now, but I'm trapped in circular dependency hell now
03:52<drzacek>where does the dirs /usr/include/asm/ and /usr/include/linux come from? I thought linux-libc-dev, but doesn't seem to be entirely true, cause I constantly get errors whining about missing files
03:53<jm_>the latter is from linux-libc-dev, the former from gcc-multilib
03:53<drzacek>aha
03:57-!-inkbottle [~inkbottle@197.149.34.20] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
04:04<drzacek>so now it cries about <asm/linkage.h> missing, which is included in <linux/linkage.h>. The file does exist in /usr/src/linux-headerxxx/..../ though
04:05<drzacek>okay, I reinstalled all packages, seems to be working
04:06<drzacek>So now back to my original question :D How do I use the functions in interrupt.h in my program?
04:07<jm_>you'll need to write something for the kernel to be able to use that
04:08<drzacek>now this is the part that I don't understand. I just want to use serial port interrupts and embed it in my application, no kernel modules, no kernel drivers, no nothing, just do directly what I need to do
04:08<drzacek>the examples in google tell me to just write a handler, register it with requert_irq() from linux/interrupt.h and done, anything more would be an overkill
04:10<jm_>why would you care about interrupts?
04:10<drzacek>want to read data from serial port when it comes, without constant polling
04:12<jm_>you can use select for that on linux, Serial Programming HOWTO should have a starting point
04:13<drzacek>I know that howto, succesfully used it already
04:13<drzacek>but why cant I use interrupts?
04:13<jm_>because that can only happen in kernel
04:13<drzacek>why
04:13-!-f10 [~flo@ip5b410c39.dynamic.kabel-deutschland.de] has joined #debian
04:13-!-f10 is "f10" on #debian-kde #debian
04:14<jm_>because it's a multi-user multi-process OS - imagine what would happen if drzacek jr. wants to do the same thing as his father with the same serial port on the same computer
04:15<drzacek>select isn't the solution, it blocks, same thing I can do now - either I block my main thread or have to make another thread to constantly poll and then send me the data over mailbox
04:15<drzacek>jm_, sucks for them, if I run something as root I should be able to
04:17<drzacek>so due to ideological reasons, I need to go extra mile to use normal things like own interrupt handlers, things you were able to do in every system ever without hassle
04:18<jm_>it's not ideological reasons - it's practical reasons - you can't expect to have two instances drive the same hardware device and expect it to magically work
04:18<drzacek>yet if I write a kernel driver it will magically works
04:18<drzacek>*work
04:18<jm_>because there will be one instance working with it
04:19<drzacek>what's wrong with letting user register a handler (given he has sufficient permissions, aka running as root or with capabilities) that will be the single instance
04:19<drzacek>or let hook own handler to already existing one

04:27<avu>drzacek: select only blocks for as long as you tell it to and "not at all" is also an option if you're using it inside an event loop or something. You can even use epoll with serial ports
04:28-!-pavlushka [~pavlushka@00021abb.user.oftc.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
04:29<drzacek>avu, I know, but same thing I can achieve now without select (proper configuration of termios), but that's a no-go for me - I can't use it in my thread.
04:29<drzacek>So if you're telling me I can't register interrupt handler, then I'll be going to create a thread that will poll the port in the background
04:30<avu>both using interrupts and polling manually is wrong though
04:31<avu>well, "wrong" for certain values of wrong :)
04:31<drzacek>if it is blocking while waiting for data it is polling for me
04:32<drzacek>what are your ideas then?
04:32<avu>depends on the program. if you have some wort of UI, you probably have an event loop in your main thread already, just integrate select/epoll there
04:33<drzacek>would be too slow to get the data then
04:33<drzacek>if it needs to wait whole main loop until reading again
04:33<avu>that's not at all what I suggested
04:34<drzacek>then I don't understand

06:48<oo_miguel>ok, this is the leas I can do.. file a low level bug, thanks
06:51<oo_miguel>but... should this be considered a "debian" bug? It is more like a feature of the upstream anacron itself, isn't it?
06:52<jm_>it's ok to report those to debian too, maintainer(s) will do the right thing

07:21<Tsutsukakushi>it's kind of ridiculous that even a simple thing like bridge won't work without systemd on debian
07:23<bremner>there's a plan for maintainers not to actively obstruct people wanting to do that work, yes
07:23<petn-randall>Tsutsukakushi: Why are you always making these FUD claims about systemd?
07:25<Tsutsukakushi>it's not a fud claim
07:25<Tsutsukakushi>and how am i always making them?
07:25<Tsutsukakushi>it's a real issue i've had on debian
07:25<peter1138>Should my bridge without systemd not be working, then?
07:25<Tsutsukakushi>udev shuts down all networking because it can't bind bridges and shit to a physical interface

07:28<petn-randall>oo_miguel: It should be the same, but I think the latter has some pre- and post-hooks that are triggered.
07:28<Tsutsukakushi>petn-randall: not everyone has the time to do that
07:28<petn-randall>Tsutsukakushi: udev touches exactly *zero* networking.

13:07<MadBoat>I want to try and track the source of that error through the kernel
13:07<MadBoat>because that error can't possibly have originated in blueZ
13:07<bremner>MadBoat: if it's a built in module, you can just build upstream kernels from source
13:08<MadBoat>but the relevant error code appears in lots of places in mgmt.c
13:08<bremner>there's a make target for a debian package
13:08<MadBoat>@bremner bluetooth isn't build in AFAICT
13:09<bremner>by built in, I mean, ships with the linux kernel
13:10<MadBoat>oh. yes, AFAIK you don't have to get bluetooth from an external apt package
13:10<MadBoat>ok, "there's a make target for a debian package". Elaborate, please?
13:13<bremner>!builddeb
13:14<bremner>it looks like the target is "deb-pkg"
13:16<MadBoat>ok, its making a fat tarball. I don't see how this helps
13:17<MadBoat>build upstream kernel modules from source? I don't have source that I trust.

13:37<MadBoat>I don't trust it because it's not matching 4.9.0-8-amd64

13:41<MadBoat>yes, I tried linux-image-$(uname -r)

13:42<MadBoat>I did find a tarball up on debian's website associated with linux-image-$(uname -r)
