08:06<olasd>chachasmooth: the docker.io maintainers felt the upstream commitment to long term stable releases wasn't good enough for the package to get into stretch
08:07<olasd>(as they would have to end up maintaining that codebase security-wise for the duration of the stretch lifecycle)
08:07<olasd>as for the absence in stretch-backports, I believe that's due to the huge number of dependencies that would need to get backported

12:48<stronkMane>test
12:49<rwp>Hello stronkMane. Welcome to Debian's irc channel.
12:50<stronkMane>Hello to you too! How do you guys deal with wine being so oudated in stable version? Do you compile the entire thing or go for an alternative? Personally aside from that issue, I love the distro and don't wish to change.
12:51<stronkMane>Also, please excuse my verbosity.
12:51<rwp>The question seems simple but it is really one with a lot of deep subtlty.
12:52<rwp>Most of us using Stable releases do so because we want to have a known good platform for a couple of years. We really don't like moving from one unfinished house to another unfinished house every other day.
12:52<stronkMane>Same. Couldn't agree more.
12:53<stronkMane>I don't want a platform which I cannot ensure my workflow.
12:53<rwp>You say that something in Stable is "so outdated". But when it relaesed it was the newest and best version available.
12:53*rwp is interrupted by phone call...
12:54<stronkMane>Well, maybe it's for a small set of applications, such as Wine.
12:59<jhutchins_wk>Wine is a pretty rapidly moving target, a lot of people just use the packages direct from winehq.com
12:59<rwp>!backports
12:59<dpkg>A backport is a package from a newer Debian branch, compiled from source for an older branch to avoid dependency and <ABI> complications. http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/reference/ch02.en.html (2.7.4 and 2.7.10), http://backports.debian.org/ . Ask me about <debian-backports> and <backport caveat>. See also <simple sid backport>.
12:59<stronkMane>Also, sorry if you're not finished.
12:59<jhutchins_wk>,v wine
12:59<judd>Package: wine on amd64 -- wheezy: 1.4.1-4; jessie: 1.6.2-20; jessie-backports: 1.8.7-2~bpo8+1; stretch: 1.8.7-2; stretch-backports: 3.0.3-2~bpo9+1; sid: 3.0.4-1; buster: 4.0~rc6-1; sid: 4.0~rc6-1
13:00<rwp>Right now there is a newest and best available. But I guarentee you that a month from now people will be complaining about that version being old. (Back from the phone.)
13:00<rwp>I think I will beat the rush and complain *now* about newest being too old. Since in a month that will put me ahead of the pack. lol
13:01<jhutchins_wk>rwp: The best way to deal with it is don't use wine, use a native *nix package instead.
13:02<rwp>jhutchins_wk, I agree with you. But there is always the attraction for users to make a FrankenDebian ala https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian/
13:03<rwp>Personally I deal with that by using chroots and other containers. But that isn't a completely trivial thing for new users and generally isn't suitable for the masses.
13:04<rwp>Anyway... wine... One might lobby the backports maintainer to update the backports to the same version as now in Buster Testing. Or one might install it directly from upstream, as they are pretty well known and do maintain an upstream release for Debian Stable.
13:06<stronkMane>So, in layman's terms either I wait for a backport for stable or I install a version from the unstable branch and pray nothing breaks?
13:08<rwp>I strongly recommend NOT installing from Unstable onto your Stable system. That way leads to a broken FrankenDebian ala https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian/
13:09<stronkMane>I know. Won't risk my system, even if I miss my Steam library.
13:09<rwp>Either the backports wine version 3 is new enough to perform for you or b) install the suite designed for Stable Stretch from winhq or c) compile from source.
13:10<rwp>Or for me install a chroot container of Sid and install wine from there. Not completely trivial though.
13:10<rwp>Or it is also possible... (lots of possibilities, no single good solution, everyone likes something different) use KVM & libvirt to run a VM.
13:11<stronkMane>Tried c. Couldn't get it working, mostly due to lack of experience in Wine (and Linux). Chrooting sounds pretty solid.
13:11<stronkMane>3D acceleration is abysmal in VMs, sadly.
13:11<rwp>Or commit to a rolling release of Testing and change to using the Debian Testing rolling release and accepting that some days things are broken.

17:41<jmcnaught>that paste is hard to read, but the relevant errors appear to be: "gnome-session[726]: gnome-session-binary[726]: WARNING: Application 'org.gnome.Shell.desktop' killed by signal 11" and "kernel: traps: gnome-shell[749] general protection ip:7fe26a80e820 sp:7fff9040cc88 error:0 in libdbus-glib-1.so.2.3.3[7fe26a7f6000+26000]"
17:41<jmcnaught>this is debian 9?
17:41<rhopkins13>Sorry the paste is hard to read, I tried to paste it on paste.debian.net but it was too big.
17:42<rhopkins13>Yes this is Debian 9
17:42<jmcnaught>oh i also found "gnome-session-f[752]: segfault at 0 ip 00007fc818b16e19 sp 00007ffeebc7fdf0 error 4 in libgtk-3.so.0.2200.11[7fc818834000+700000]"
17:43<jmcnaught>so why are you getting segfaults? did this start happening after updates?
17:43<rhopkins13>Yes, I saw that too. Can't seem to find that same exact error online, though I've seen similar ones.
17:44<rhopkins13>I don't know why I'm getting segfaults, it was really weird. I was just using my PC, had a few Chrome tabs open, spreadsheets, e-mail, and out of nowhere it locked up, and closed my graphical session.
17:45<rhopkins13>So I switched to tty2, logged in, ran ps -A -f and everything that I had been running was closed.
17:46<rhopkins13>So I tried rebooting, and it wouldn't let me get to the login screen. For the heck of it I tried apt update && apt dist-upgrade && apt upgrade, not much got upgraded but nothing that looked significant.
17:47<jmcnaught>what video drivers are you using?
17:47<rhopkins13>I'm not sure, it's the Intel Core i3 graphics.
17:48<rhopkins13>After it stopped working I tried removing xserver-xorg-video-intel, that didn't help, so I re-installed it and it still hasn't changed.
17:49<rhopkins13>lspci output: http://paste.debian.net/1062391/
17:51<jmcnaught>it looks like other people having similar errors on other distros fixed this by either reinstalling or downgrading gnome packages. I'm skeptical that would work unless some how a library got corrupted on disk
17:51<jmcnaught>!debsums
17:51<dpkg>debsums is a utility that will check a package's files against their checksums. The "-a" argument will instruct it to also check configuration files: "apt install debsums; debsums -a -s". Almost all packages come with md5sums included in the package or apt will have generated them for you; generate missing ones with "apt-get install --reinstall `debsums -l`". Ask me about <md5sums>.
