02:19-!-abgr is "abgr" on #debian #oftc
02:21<abgr>installed debian 9 on an old laptop with radeon graphics. right at the moment of kernel mode setting, the screen goes black (i.e. backlight off). i managed to blindly log in and make a screenshot, everything looks ok, except that i can't see it.
02:21<abgr>using open source drivers + non-free amd firmware
02:22<abgr>so far i tried: nomodeset -> error message about UMS not being supported, everything is wrong resolution, and acpi_backlight=vendor/video/native/none -> no change
02:24<abgr>i also verified via /sys/class/... that the LVDS connection is enabled, others are disabled, and backlight is not 0
02:24<abgr>any ideas of what i might try?
02:25<abgr>by the way, i would have preferred to use the onboard intel graphics anyway, but they don't even show up in lspci, and there is no corresponding bios setting

02:29<cc>exact laptop model?

02:32<jm_>dmidecode might show some info

02:37-!-Texou [~Texou@000178ec.user.oftc.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
02:39<cc>abgr lspci -nnk
02:40<abgr>http://paste.debian.net/1070590/
02:41<abgr>i noticed that /sys/class/drm/card0-LVDS-1/radeon_bl0/bl_power was 0, but writing 1 to it does not do anything
02:44<cc>still not quite clear about the issue
02:44<cc>what exactly is "right at the moment of kernel mode setting"
02:44<cc>start of xorg? start of boot?
02:44<abgr>cc: during boot, at the moment when the tty output switches to native resolution
02:45<abgr>early during boot
02:45<cc>I see
02:48<abgr>i googled and found a mailing list thread about a similar issue, but there the wrong output was selected during boot, which is not the case here, as i confirmed with the screenshot
02:48<jm_>how does screenshot confirm that?
02:49<cc>I am not sure that radeon is the right driver
02:49<cc>not 100% sure
02:49<abgr>jm_: it's the resolution of the native display
02:49<abgr>cc: from what i can tell, the -ati driver is used for older cards
02:49<jm_>abgr: do you have an external monitor you could use for test?
02:50<abgr>jm_: no. but like i said, i'm pretty sure, because /sys/class/drm/... says LVDS is enabled, all others are disabled, and the resolution of the screenshot is 1680x1050, which is the resolution of the LVDS display
02:52<jm_>abgr: the only idea I have is to try with older/newer X/kernel/whatever
02:52<cc>a long shot but
02:52<cc>abgr grep FIRMWARE /boot/config*
02:52<jm_>that's enabled since it loads it for RV630

02:54<cc>looks good
02:54<abgr>i was hoping the acpi_backlight kernel parameter might change something, is there anything similar to that?

02:56<jm_>maybe https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging/Backlight https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/backlight
02:57<cc>abgr can you elaborate a bit on the part where you took 1680x1050 screenshot etc
02:58<cc>you mean xorg works?
02:58-!-l117 [~l117@185.117.118.24] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
02:58<cc>just screen is black?
02:59<abgr>cc: yes. i tried the steps to log in and make a screenshot on my other laptop, then did them blindly. i got kde running.
03:00<cc>maybe if you pastebin output of "xrandr" from such a session
03:00<cc>along with Xorg.0.log
03:00<cc>we could maybe guess something
03:05<abgr>cc: https://pasteboard.co/I3dPmEl.png
03:05<abgr>looks fine

03:12<abgr>cc: i have now, no effect. there is also a display power saving option in the bios, which also has no effect, tried all permutations
03:12<abgr>i think i'll try a kernel from backports next, although the chance this will change anything for such old hardware is slim i guess
03:15<cc>this seems vaguely relevant https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1568211
03:16<cc>maybe try some variation of #7

03:22<abgr>cc: the descriptions of #7 sounds like my problem. but the solution 'recovery mode without nomodeset' does not work, i just get a non-quiet boot with the screen turning black later
03:23-!-Kohlrabi [~kohlrabi@000129a3.user.oftc.net] has quit [Quit: http://quassel-irc.org - Chat comfortably. Anywhere.]
03:23<cc>later when?
03:25<abgr>cc: i think before x starts
03:25<abgr>cc: it always coincides with switching to the native resolution
03:25<abgr>...well, i think, i don't actually see it
03:26<abgr>i assume it's when the radeon card takes control, no?
03:26<cc>what happens when you boot into recovery mode shell, and manually modprobe radeon
03:28-!-mith_ [~mith@217.64.113.181] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
03:31<cc>https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1784473 also seems relevant, #35 suggests a newer kernel might help

03:42<abgr>ok, no difference with new kernel
03:44<cc>the only thing I can think of is try downloading older livecd images to see if any of them boots
03:45<cc>like debian 8 or 7
03:45<abgr>yeah, maybe i'll try that next. i'll take a break for now, thanks nonetheless for the assistance!

04:53<duclicsic>is it not sufficient to create them then change the owner with chown?
04:54<duclicsic>'chown www-data: filename' will set both user and group as www-data

10:55<sim590>Wow. I did sudo resize2fs /dev/sdb1 '330G' and then sudo parted /dev/sdb resizepart 1 330G and now my dmesg says bad geometry: block count 86507520 exceeds size of device (80566150 blocks). Why? I thought that resizing was done that way... The resize2fs step did go without errors and the parted step too...
10:55<peter1138>Are you increasing or shrinking?

11:02<peter1138>Redo something, I guess
11:02<peter1138>I've only ever expanded, or used gparted to handle it all.
11:05<sim590>OK. I've used testdisk to recover the 330G partition and it worked.
