05:45<bony>getting inteldrmfb error #914495 while trying to install on dell inspiron 3168. I get this error while booting normally "switching to inteldrmfb from efi vga". When I add nomodeset in grub the system boots in to tty but no gui starts. tried lightdm, lxdm and gdm3 non of them start. I tried disabling i915 dirvers but it did not help. As mentioned in the bug this issues was resolved in 4.19 and upwards kernels but I get this error on debian unstable with
05:45<bony> 4.19.20-1 kernel
05:45<bony>how to force or switch to inteldrmfb instead of EFI VGA

06:00<bony>did not get you
06:00<jm_>the bug report you mentioned references this commit
06:00<bony>ok
06:01<bony>can you please give the link to that commit? so that I can find how to fix it in my system?

06:06<jm_>I am asking if 4.9.20 still has this change? if so, maybe your bug is a different one?
06:07<bony>this is the output of uname -r 4.19.0-3-amd64
06:08<bony>but when I say uname -a i get
06:08<bony>Linux debian 4.19.0-3-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.19.20-1 (2019-02-11) x86_64 GNU/Linux
06:09<bony>let me check if that commit is found the installed kernel
06:09<jm_>I would just assume it does since it's from 11. feb, and the commit was made in november 2018

06:12<bony>jm_: me too assume the same but let me confirm it
06:23<bony>yes it is there
06:23<jm_>ok so maybe it really is a different issue - have you checked dmesg output when it doesn't work?
06:23<bony>i downloaded source of 4.19.20 and checked for the code it is there so this means there is somethng else wrong
06:24<jm_>ahh I meant check in the debian kernel tree
06:24<bony>yeah i downloaded the kernel from this link http://deb.debian.org/debian/pool/main/l/linux/linux_4.19.20.orig.tar.xz
06:24<jm_>right, that's good enough
06:32<bony>so how to find out what is wrong?
06:33<bony>I mean the only thing I get is that error after the error screen goes blank and I have to force restart the system
06:33<jm_>I would start by checking what kernel says when you see the problem (dmesg output)
06:33<jm_>so you are saying you can't use the system to check dmesg output?
06:34<jm_>do you have another system you could use to try and connect to the problematic one?
06:34<bony>I have to start the system with nomodeset. Then I am able to use the system
06:35<jm_>but X does not start?
06:35<bony>no X does not start
06:36<bony>https://paste.debian.net/1071858/
06:36<bony>this a part of the output of dmesg

06:36<bony>which I think is of some interest
06:37<bony>somehow switching to inteldrmfb from EFI VGA is freezing the screen.
06:38<bony>I will try to login to the system remotely after disabling nomodeset and see if can login. If I am able to login then I can find some more info
06:39<bony>I am not able to ping the system
06:40<jm_>that's not going to help :)
06:40<bony>hmm
06:42<bony>is there a way to force load inteldrmfb or disable EFI VGA

12:39<petn-randall>xxzz^: You seem to not realize this is a support channel. So if you have an *actual* support question, you need to formulate it. If you just want to write about your day, a blog would be a better suited medium.

12:42<xxzz^>I apologize for harsh comments but I am frustrated
12:43<petn-randall>xxzz^: There's no need to post to the channel then, until you can provide details.
12:43<xxzz^>systemctl or journalctl doesn't show any error when I launch a program but the programs don't work, configuration files are missing full comments
12:44<xxzz^>I dont understand why there is an override for configuration file
12:44<petn-randall>xxzz^: Can you share the commands and full output of said daemons? → https://paste.debian.net.
12:44<xxzz^>right now I can't

12:45<xxzz^>sure
12:46<xxzz^>I lost my patience
12:46<xxzz^>sorry for the inconvience
12:48<xxzz^>I've one question thougt - if I delete debian specific confs for some programs, do I need to make some other changes before placing my own or upstream conf files?
12:48<xxzz^>is there any detailed systemd overrides template?
12:49<sarnold>it may depend upon the daemon; I believe the debian apache tooling collects configuration snippets and joins them together in a way that's different than the way the upstream apache folks eventually decided upon
12:49<xxzz^>okay, is there any up-to-date documentation for ref?
12:50<sarnold>for which tool?
12:50<xxzz^>I had working (guess) stretch but I upgraded to testing for some programs but later my nvidia-docker install failed

12:56<xxzz^>I will like to compile my own programs but I don't understand package building stuff
12:59<xxzz^>anyway on tp of this there is a mess with $PATH; which isn't critical but it is there
13:00<xxzz^>not sure why stuff fails after following published documentation
13:00<sarnold>xxzz^: I believe you'd have more success on irc if you give this a read http://rurounijones.github.io/blog/2009/03/17/how-to-ask-for-help-on-irc/
13:03<petn-randall>Also if you have problems with buster, you should ask here:
13:03<petn-randall>!debian-next
13:03<dpkg>#debian-next is the channel for testing/unstable support on the OFTC network (irc.oftc.net), *not* on freenode. If you get "Cannot join #debian-next (Channel is invite only)." it means you did not read it's on irc.oftc.net.
13:05<xxzz^>okay
13:05-!-broseph [~broseph@00028874.user.oftc.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
13:05<xxzz^>like I said I will provide details
13:06<xxzz^>all I am asking is for a proper reference for building packages
13:06<mnuhmnuh>!ssb
13:06<dpkg>First, check for a backport on <debian-backports>. If unavailable: 1) Add a deb-src line for sid (not a deb line!); ask me about <deb-src sid> 2) enable debian-backports (see <bdo>) 3) aptitude update; aptitude install build-essential; aptitude build-dep packagename; apt-get -b source packagename; 4) install the resultant debs. To change compilation options, see <package recompile>; for versions newer than sid see <uupdate>.
13:07<xxzz^>I believe I can fix this broken thing on my own if I know how to package the stuff
13:07<sarnold>xxzz^: https://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ documents the usual expectations
13:08<xxzz^>hypothetically if I want to change a configuration of any program that has a conf file + a debian override; which I conf I shoud change
13:09<xxzz^>should*
13:10<sarnold>it depends upon the tool. sometimes it'll be a config file in your home dir. sometimes a config in /etc/.
13:10<xxzz^>I am not sure why there are split conf files to start with
13:10<sarnold>the manpage for the tool in question should describe the order that configuration files are read, and which ones override which other ones
13:13<xxzz^>okay, for the sake of clarity; I do not want any debian config files for whatever reasons and want to go with upstream files- do I need to change any systemd service files?
13:13<sarnold>it depends upon the systemd service file in question.
13:15<xxzz^>ohay
13:15<xxzz^>okay*
13:17<xxzz^>do you have a template for making a .deb for a complex program other than 'hello world'
13:17<sarnold>not me, I've only ever modified existing packages
13:17<xxzz^>I want to make a dozen of custom packages that aren't available or are broken
13:18<xxzz^>I am able to compile from source & install but I need a package
13:19<xxzz^>I have used checkinstall for small packages but it I don't have any expertise building complex packages with several dependencies
13:22<TobiX>xxzz^: Well, if you have missing and broken packages, start with the broken ones, create a fix (and preferably report it as a bug) and familiarize yourself with the debian package build toolchain this way. After that you can start with new packages
13:22<xxzz^>okay
13:23<xxzz^>sorry for typoes, I'm multitasking atm
13:25<TobiX>The quick & dirty way: "apt source <package>; cd <package>; fix-whatever; dch --nmu; debuild -uc -us"
13:26<xxzz^>sometime back I had a problem with suricata inline IPS and the upstream was reluctant to help me out since the local version is now unsupported by upstream
13:26<sarnold>I'd recommend replacing the debuild step with sbuild (or similar) but that's a pretty good starting point
13:26<xxzz^>even backports version is not latest
13:27<xxzz^>I need it built with PF_RING and luajit, the source compile and install went fine but it didn't work
13:27<TobiX>suricata is one of the tools I wouldn't use from the Debian sources, but that's just my opinion
13:28<xxzz^>well it works on other linux flavors
13:29<TobiX>OTOH, the backport seems to be quite up-to-date...
13:29<xxzz^>backports has 4.X
13:29<xxzz^>but not PF_RING
13:30<xxzz^>I don't have systemd file for it, using manual start for now
13:31<TobiX>Ohh, I remember. PF_RING - the thing that killed a whole Kubernetes cluster. Of course the Debian package doesn't have PF_RING, since it's not part of the mainline Linux kernel
13:33<xxzz^>I built it, it offers good performance over pcap
13:33<xxzz^>it is a personal preference

20:39<ais-admin>xrandr is having trouble detecting that there is a monitor plugged into my onboard Intel 9x graphics controller. This same system worked great under Jessie using xinerama for dual display. Under Stretch I can use both displays if I configure them with xorg.conf but of course no moving things between screens. Enabling xinerama in the xorg.conf causes the system to not boot to gui. So - either I need to find a way to get xinerama to not lock up
20:39<ais-admin>the system or get xrandr to detect the monitor plugged into the onboard vga. (The other raphics controller is a Radeon - and works great without activating xinerama. Any hints appreciated.

23:13<xxzz^>I don't want to reinstall, have crypt setup. Reinstall will take long time.
23:14<sarnold>just be aware that there's almost no provisions for downgrading deb packages. most of the time it'll work, but some packages are one-way transitions and there's no good way to tell.
