07:07<cc>basically my problem is that dark colors are too dark on this monitor
07:07<cc>I've tried cranking up xrandr --gamma and it helps, dark colors become bearable
07:08<cc>but the problem with this approach is that bright colors become proportionally birghter as well
07:08<cc>so I am looking for some other way: to make dark colors brighter but to keep everything else the same
07:13<cc>installing displaycal, we'll see where this goes

09:18<rudi_s>cesar: Not sure what you mean. It's the installation location. GRUB can use EFI just fine.
09:18<rudi_s>AFAIK Debian installer doesn't support booting the kernel directly.
09:20<cesar>rudi_s: the installer literally warns me that a lot of EFI systems are not adhering to the EFI standard (buggy), and can cause trouble for GRUB to load properly. Therefore it offers me to install GRUB on a USB stick/floppy
09:20<cesar>it is unclear to me in the description if this means it will install GRUB on BOTH or EITHER

09:22<cesar>well I ignored the prompt, installed GRUB to the masterboot, and then went back to the menu and installed it on a USB. No idea if that would actually work if it failed to load GRUB via the MBR and I tried it to load the USB, but it seemed the best approach
09:22<cesar>(in my case it's loading fine from the MBR anyway now)

11:42<znoteer>Is there a way around this: sshfs mounts a remote fs using the remote uid and gid of files. So if I mount /etc on a remote machine to a mount point in my home directory, the mount point is owned by root and group root. I then can't umount it. It's inconvenient. And this, despite the fact that the command "mount" reports that it is mounted with my local uid and gid.

16:00<somiaj>/boot/efi is a separat partitino for a modern reason, it needs to be fat16 or fat32 so it can be read by the firware
16:01<sqrt{not}>..... pitiful, but it works, so I leave it alone
16:03<somiaj>why pitiful? the efi partition is one that needs to be read by onboard firmware, and fat16/32 was standard enough across multiple oses to make it reasonable to me.
16:04<somiaj>one can put /boot as fat32 and use that as the efi partition almost. Turns out debian has a bit of a problem with this because of lacking hardlinks (needed to upgrade packages)
16:05<sqrt{not}>And yes, that makes sense, since /boot/efi == /dev/sda1 . OK, standard , but I would say historical if it must be some DOS standard
16:06<somiaj>I think also due to simplicity, firwmare doens't need all the buzzes and whistels of modern file systems, but efi to me is fairly modern.

17:45<nezZario>Is there anything in particular I should look for if buying a printer? I'd really like a no-frills printer for once. As far as I know there isn't a such thing as a main-stream FOSS printer but man I'd pay extra for one if they existed.

20:23<FoolishOwl>The most important thing to remember about Brother printers is that you should *not* go to their website and follow their installation instructions for their printer driver.
20:24<FoolishOwl>Instead, if Debian doesn't autoconfigure your driver, you'll probably want generic/pxlmono, or generic/pxlcolor.

21:13<sqrt{not}>I bought a $99 Brother printer/fax/scanner/copier and convinced CUPS to talk to it as an IPP device, no driver needed. It is a MFC-J5620DW, connected on my local ethernet, and works perfect with stretch, windows, and all the local i-Things too. It is also willing to connect on wi-fi or USB, but I just use the RJ45 connection.
21:16<sqrt{not}>This was back when stretch was still == testing, and I pulled in CUPS 2.2.2-2 from experimental. CUPS is now at 2.2.1-8 in stretch, which may be close enough ?
