03:52-!-roentgen [~none@0001cab0.user.oftc.net] has quit [Quit: Puff]
03:52<purple1>I have a debian based system and consider switching to debian because it looks like there is some sort of junk going on with netfilter
03:53<purple1>Is it possible to download a debian with kernel 2.4 or 2.5 if 2.5 was ever released
03:55<purple1>I'm recalling something like 2.5 was never released
03:55<purple1>so 2.4
03:55<purple1>at0m: do you speak
03:57<purple1>2.4 is perfect for you
03:57-!-Doctor_Pi [Elite18114@this.bnc.isnt.from.chi-town.elitebnc.org] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
03:57<purple1>the same way the bios has an option to disable virtual extensions
03:57<purple1>at boot pick 2.4 or 2.6
03:58<purple1>and every kernel looks to be tainted with 2.6 anyway\
03:58<purple1>2.6 initrd
03:58<purple1>mayswell use 2.6
03:58-!-roentgen [~none@0001cab0.user.oftc.net] has joined #debian

03:59<at0m>2.6?
03:59<at0m>,v linux-image-amd64
03:59<judd>Package: linux-image-amd64 on amd64 -- wheezy: 3.2+46; wheezy-security: 3.2+46+deb7u2; jessie: 3.16+63+deb8u2; jessie-security: 3.16+63+deb8u2; jessie-backports: 4.9+80+deb9u4~bpo8+1; stretch: 4.9+80+deb9u6; stretch-security: 4.9+80+deb9u6; stretch-backports: 4.19+102~bpo9+1; buster: 4.19+102; sid: 4.19+102
03:59<at0m>2.6 was 15-20y ago
03:59<purple1>yeah but they have a 2.6 initrd dont they
04:00<purple1>it boots 2.6 first then the new things
04:00<purple1>with drivers for things you dont have
04:00<purple1>it can be informative looking at the code
04:01<at0m>feel free =)
04:01<purple1>yeah
04:02<at0m>https://wiki.debian.org/initramfs-tools
04:03<purple1>This package contains tools to create an initramfs for prepackaged 2.6 Linux kernel images.
04:04<purple1>mayswell use 2.6
04:04<purple1>what's the purpose of compiling things for fiber servers
04:06<purple1>there have been a few updates to things used like ext
04:06<purple1>and there are some obscure things
04:07<purple1>but aside from that if I want to make the system run smooth is there any benifit to --trust-tofu
04:07-!-Doctor_Pi is "Ivan Avery Frey" on #moocows #oftc #Corsair #virt
04:07-!-Doctor_Pi [Elite18114@185.101.218.209] has joined #debian
04:08<purple1>what I am saying is all of the new junk is it 10-15 years of fighting for technology domination
04:08<purple1>not that the updates really had anything to do with advancments
04:09<purple1>even if I use say 4.9 which sources I have ready it is still a 2.6 based kernel according to initrd
04:10<purple1>so at0m I asked about 2.4 because it doesnt have cpio
04:10<purple1>or virtual kernel whatever it is called
04:10<purple1>it runs on hardware
04:10<purple1>kvirt
04:11<purple1>is there a running 2.4 debian
04:11<purple1>here is an example of a problem which I may have with 4.9
04:12<purple1>there is some mangling apparently virtual nat table
04:12<purple1>because there is no nat it is a single user machine
04:12<purple1>does 4,9 have it ? hard to tell without compiling it and using it
04:13<purple1>mayswell use 2.6 and upgrade from there

04:26<purple1>at0m: tell me this much does the current 4.9 kernel debian have junk in the netfilter
04:26<purple1>that is a fully ontopic question
04:26<purple1>debian specific
04:27<purple1>if I had a massive machine on fiber with a raid array sure Id try them all
04:27<purple1>find out for myself

11:11<nevivurn>sakax: I've just seen the same issue, in my case it was conflicting with libopenjp2-7:i386
11:12<nevivurn>Brought in because of wine in my case.
11:13<sakax>how do I solve, nevivurn ?

11:14<nevivurn>I removed libopenjp2-7:i386, since it was not a hard dependency(just recommends). Will test my wine stuff later, but that resolved it.
11:15<nevivurn>I prefer to use aptitude instead of apt(-get) since it lets me navigate the dependencies more quickly and actually handle those in a sane way.

15:03<znoteer>I've been trying to get the computers on my LAN to synchronise their clocks with the clock of my router/firewall. I'm using systemd-timesyncd on the local computers. I apparently don't know how to configure the ntpd server on the router/fw to server time to the local LAN. Here's a paste of what happens between a local box that communicates the the ntp.org pool, and when it tries to
15:03<znoteer>communicate with my router/fw. I tried both broadcast mode (https://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/html/assoc.html#broad) and server mode (https://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/html/assoc.html#client) on the router/fw. Here's the paste: https://paste.debian.net/hidden/9d652026/. Can anyone suggest any further avenues of investigation?

15:48<dpkg>hello, mnuhmnuh
15:49<mnuhmnuh>!ntp
15:49<dpkg>from memory, ntp is The Network Time Protocol (NTP) is used to synchronize the clocks of computer systems over a network. "aptitude install ntp" is enough to get going and synchronise your clock using the default ntp pool. http://wiki.debian.org/NTP See also <systemd-timesyncd>, <set time>, <pool.ntp>
15:49<mnuhmnuh>!set time
15:49<dpkg>To set the time on Debian systems, use date --set. The truly enlightened user, however, will install <ntp> to have their clock set automatically on reboot and slewed to match time servers. Also verify the system's UTC setting and set the correct time zone; ask me about <utc>, <timezone>. see systemd-timesyncd instead of installing ntp https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Systemd-timesyncd

So, my ntp server on the router/fw should just be serving time happily away to local machines. I've

20:12<rwp>znoteer, The ntpd will move from the .INIT. state when it has contacted a server and can sync up the time. It's an internal state.
20:13<rwp>So with the new pool config does it connect to those servers okay? And time sync up?
20:14<rwp>Note that if the time is really too far out then ntpd will refuse to jump the time. But if you restart the subsystem it will do boot time activities and will jump the time as far as needed. In other words, restarting (or rebooting) may be needed to get things to sync. *IF* they are able to connect.
