02:26<bipul>How to check my cpu fan is working or not in debian?
02:26<Blendie>sensors-lm for instance
02:28<at0m>bipul: you being helped on freenode with this?
02:28<Blendie>OBOBOBOBlm-sensors - utilities to read temperature/voltage/fan sensors
02:28<Blendie>oops
02:28<Blendie>lm-sensors - utilities to read temperature/voltage/fan sensors
02:29<bipul>Blendie, Is it a command? lm-sensors?
02:29<Blendie>it's a text application for reading data from your machine's sensors
02:30<Blendie>you can install it from apt, then, run 'sensors'
02:30<Blendie>it's show you all possible sensor reads from your computer
02:32-!-hekatei [~hekatei@200116b82640b200a1c6d230e4cdb6d1.dip.versatel-1u1.de] has quit [Quit: Quit: Leaving]
02:35<bipul>E: Unable to locate package sensors
02:35<bipul>In which repository it's found?
02:37<at0m>bipul: lm-sensors
02:37<at0m>not sensors
02:37<at0m>once lm-sensors is installed, you can run sensors.
02:37<at0m>but we're crossposting here.
02:39<bipul>bash: lm-sensors: command not found
02:39<at0m>bipul: "apt install lm-sensors". then, run "sensors".
02:43<bipul>at0m, Could you please help me to read out this data https://paste.debian.net/plain/1074314
02:43<bipul>Is this data is normal?
02:46<at0m>bipul: as root, i would first run sensors-detect
02:47<at0m>hmm here it shows the same using root and normal user
02:49<bipul>https://paste.debian.net/plain/1074315 at0m
02:51<at0m>dpkg: tell bipul about crossposting
02:51<at0m>dpkg: tell bipul about crosspost
02:52<at0m>bipul: so, seems no sensors are detected (ok, just one)
02:52<bipul>at0m, I was trying to share the `sensors-detect` details with you.
02:53<at0m>bipul: indeed, my mistake, too, carrying on here like that.
02:53<Blendie>at0m: if his hardware is not supported he wont get the data
02:54<bipul>What data? What is not supported?
02:54<Blendie>bipul: your chips seems to not be supported by linux and you wont get the data provided by them
02:54<bipul>huh?
02:55<Blendie>can you read my son?
02:55<bipul>yes uncle. I can read you.
02:56<Blendie>then why the questions? you seem to lack linux support for the sensor chips
02:56<Blendie>basically, get proper hardware if you want to run linux
02:56<at0m>bipul: anyhow, as diogenes_ on freenode suggested, reboot and check your bios settings for fan control
02:56<at0m>then maybe continue there =)
02:59<bipul>okay, I have bought this laptop without any pre installed OS like Kairosoft.
02:59<bipul>I purchase this laptop to use only linux.

03:57<bipul>kindly suggest some solution to control the overheating.

03:59<Blendie>fancontrol - utility to control the fan speed
04:00<bipul>Blendie, I have installed that program. I'm not sure how to use it?

06:18<at0m>bipul: i feel for you, having searched for laptop without preinstalled MS. but really, when working with linux, research linux support before you buy any new hardware. and even when it seems supported, read on user experiences etc. this goes for a dull usb wifi stick as for full machines.
06:20<at0m>and it's not just "laptop brand xyz", but all the different components. gfx, expansion cards, wireless, network, pointer device, the lot, all individually
06:20<at0m>me too, i've learned (and am still learning) the hard way.

13:37<kveroneau>Is there an IRC channel here dedicated to netfilter/iptables?
13:38<kveroneau>Since this channel is more fuller than #linux and I am using Debian, I'll post my netfilter related question here.
13:39<kveroneau>Umm, so I have a custom Linux router, built using Debian of course. It works perfectly and has been running for 204 days. I am just running into a problem trying to add a very specific type of filter.
13:39<kveroneau>Is it possible to whitelist IP addresses which can be accessed outbound from the network?
13:40<kveroneau>I tried using -d(destination) and --dport in the nat/POSTROUTING table to allow access to a very specific IP and port, but it doesn't appear to be working.
13:41<kveroneau>I added the required similar rule into FORWARD as well. At this point I feel like destination may not be possible with netfilter, but I feel that I am just doing something wrong in my iptables configuration. I'll post a pastebin link shortly here with the related config
13:42<kveroneau>Also note, that I am not using any other firewall related software, I am solely using the iptables and ipset commands.
13:42<kveroneau>Along with SaltStack for templating the iptables.up.rules file.
13:43<kveroneau>pastebin doesn't have a highlighter for iptables.
13:47<kveroneau>Pastebin: https://pastebin.com/bdF7C1ex
13:47<kveroneau>My ultimate goal here is to only allow my Windows-based machines to connect to Steam services, but nothing else.
13:48<kveroneau>As some of you may know, the latest Windows updates have been pretty broken as of late, and I don't really use Windows at home for anything more than playing windows-based games, so I naturally thought I could just whitelist all of valves servers and call it a day. :D

15:10<mnuhmnuh>kveroneau: #debian-security ?
15:11<mnuhmnuh>kveroneau: https://wiki.debian.org/IRC lists channels. perhaps on freenode?
15:16<kveroneau>I think I might have found a solution after some trial and error.
15:17<kveroneau>It doesn't seem like the POSTROUTING chain can use destination IP/port combos, but if I place this into the FORWARD chain, I can ACCEPT packets to this host/port combo, and REJECT all other packets.
15:17<kveroneau>IPTables should raise this as an error or warning saying that -d/--dport is not supported in the *nat table and/or POSTROUTING chain.
15:18<bremner>I don't think #debian-security is really a support channel
15:20<kveroneau>Windows acts really interestingly when it's behind a highly restricted firewall/router.
15:20<kveroneau>Anyways, I think the solution for my problem is that the dest/dport options need to be within the FORWARD table instead of the POSTROUTING table.
15:21<kveroneau>Are there any how-tos or guides for creating what I'd like to call a highly paranoid firewall/router configuration with iptables?
15:23<kveroneau>I guess the proper name is a "restrictive firewall", most how-to are on permissive firewalls unfortunately, and in our current cyber world, permissive firewalls are such a pain.
15:25<kveroneau>Well technically my implementation is a mix of permissive and restrictive depending on the source internal machine trying to connect to an outside Internet resource. Linux is free to go anywhere, whereas Windows hosts are highly restricted to a whitelist of IP and port combos.

22:03<Nindalf>Is it okay to ask for sysadmin advice here? I've got an old wheezy server I just upgraded to jessie, and now it becomes unresponsive every few minutes (I can only access it through ssh, and reboot it), and I'm not sure where to look for clues about why.

22:08<blast007>what becomes unresponsive?
22:10<Nindalf>Now that I check, it actually shuts itself down somehow.
22:11<Nindalf>It shows as powered off. (it's a virtual server on a cloud platform)
22:14<Nindalf>I should probably just move to a new virtual server instead of diagnosing this. Kind of interesting how strange it is, though.
22:16<Nindalf>I've looked at kern.log and syslog, and watched top until it stopped updating my terminal, and nothing seems relevant there.
22:17<blast007>what kernel version is being used? check 'uname -r'
22:18<Nindalf>booting...
22:19<Nindalf>3.16.0-7-amd64

22:23<Nindalf>It doesn't run anything unusual. Just apache. It still hangs if I shut apache down.
22:25<blast007>hmm, okay, 3.16 should be fine then. was wondering if it was some VPS with a shared kernel that was super old.
22:25<Nindalf>It's hung again already. I just get a few minutes after each reboot.
22:26<Nindalf>Yeah, it's some goofy thing. I should just move to a new one.
22:26<Nindalf>Thanks for your help.
22:27<blast007>you could run 'dmesg -w', which will output kernel messages as they come
22:28<Nindalf>I'll give that a try.
22:33<Nindalf>Nah, it froze without emitting anything after the startup messages.

22:40<Nindalf>Thanks for helping. It's probably some weird interaction with the specific virtual server setup. I'll just set up on a new server.
