01:31<sim590>I now for some reason have a major hardware issue (out of no where). A few moments after booting, I get those stripes on my screen https://i.imgur.com/YNLu8v9.jpg and the computer is completely frozed and kernel doesn't respond sysrq keys. It's dead. I can always reboot my computer however. What sort of hardware issue could that be? What strikes you first?
01:33<sim590>You can see on the screen [i915] string, but it's not related to softwware since the problem also occurs on live USB disks such as archlinux and memtest86-usb.
01:34<cHawk>broken part, indeed

01:36<cHawk>and sorry, I have to leave now ...
01:36<sim590>Yeah. I have upgraded my laptop with some RAM a few months back. Now, I have just tried to remove it and I'm testing if I see the problem.

02:20<twb>sim590: that photo just shows artefacts of your GPU going tits-up
02:21<twb>sim590: double-check the video cable is seated properly, then do a full reboot. if it still isn't fixed, your GPU might be permanently fucked.
02:21<twb>(If it's a laptop then the video cable is an LVDS ribbon and not worth trying to reseat)
02:33<at0m>i had similar artefacts on HDMI display cos of the cable, but that cable didn't freeze the machine

03:09<jm_>either that or some compatibility issue - I had a case where 2 sets of 2 sticks worked OK, but combined not
03:10<sim590>jm_: hmmmmm. Does it have to do with RAM speed or other parameters like that? I thought that I checked those.

03:14<jm_>sim590: apparently in my case it was some chipset issue
03:16<sim590>huh... That's obnoxious. Shady details that aren't advertised or mentioned to the customer. Enraging.
03:17<sim590>twb: When it detects errors by a big amount, can it become slow in the long run?

13:01<bzoidberg>wouldn’t jessie-updates stay up since its an LTS release?
13:01<blast007>nope https://wiki.debian.org/LTS/Using
13:02<bzoidberg>ah. jessie/updates instead of jessie-updates…
13:02<bzoidberg>well, this will be an adventure. thanks blast.
13:02<blast007>jessie/updates is security updates, which is how that has been
13:02<bzoidberg>then what on earth was jessie-updates?
13:04<rant>!volitile
13:04<dpkg>Debian Volatile was a project aiming at keeping Debian releases up-to-date for fast moving packages such as virus scanners, spam scanners and firmware downloaders. It was replaced by the <stable-updates> suite as of Debian 6.0 "Squeeze". http://lists.debian.org/debian-volatile-announce/2012/msg00000.html
13:04<rant>!stable-updates
13:04<dpkg>rumour has it, stretch-updates is a suite providing updates to some packages (from <proposed-updates>) prior to a <point release>. All packages from stretch-updates will be included in point releases. https://wiki.debian.org/StableUpdates . Not to be confused with <stretch/updates> which is for <security> updates.
13:05<rant>bzoidberg: buster is soon to release, which will make stretch oldstable, thus there will be no more point releases for jessie, thus no reason for stable-updates
13:05<bzoidberg>ok, makes sense. thanks rant
13:05<rant>bzoidberg: LTS support is provided by the stable/updates
13:06<rant>I suppose "LTS support" was a lil redundant :D

13:09<rant>thats what they get for using oldstable and not paying attention to release cycles :D
13:10<bzoidberg>oh tell me about it. we’re still using ancient versions of… so many things…
13:10<rant>just because Debian is a very slow moving train, doesn't mean you should just keep lying on the track
13:14<jhutchins_wk>Then there are the distributions that provide stable support for ten years.

20:56<twb>I need some more PCIe gigabit NICs. Normally I buy Intel e1000 chipsets, because they have good support. But those are A$50, and the TP-Link TG-3468 units are only A$12.
20:56<twb>Anybody know offhand whether TP-Link TG-3468 chipsets are well-supported in mainline linux?

21:15<sarnold>is it perchance a dual-socket board with only one socket populated?

21:19<twb>I only saw one CPU slot, but I wasn't really looking
