00:55<fuchs_freenode>Greetings! I am Fuchs, Freenode staffer and head of Canonical's Anti-spam Project.
00:55<fuchs_freenode>Freenode has been a frequent target of trolls, spambots, and scammers since its very inception. Despite this, we are the premire FOSS collaboration platform on the Internet. Our team of staffers and even Mark Shuttleworth himself have worked dilligently to ensure Freenode remains a safe, supportive platform where the FOSS commununity can thrive. The costs of network monitoring and the lawsuits mounted by Larry Ellison
00:55<fuchs_freenode>and Oracle have presented challenges to Freenode's very survival.
00:55<fuchs_freenode>Mark Shuttleworth and Freenode staff have now unveiled the Make Freenode Great Again plan! Partnering with Huawei, we are in the process of installing an intelligent firewall that will defend against any DDOS or massive spambot operation using Huawei's predictive computing technology, the same software used to track and control China's Uighur Muslim minority.
00:55<fuchs_freenode>Trolls will be recognized based on these predictive patterns and automatically blocked. This system, however, will be costly, and we need your help paying for licensing and installation.
00:55-!-fuchs_freenode was kicked from #debian by debhelper [flood]

02:43<tripkin>Hi all, I am running the latest Debian 9, and have disabled the screen saver, dpms timeouts, and dpms. I then use a hotkey to disable my screens, which works fine. However, after the monitors go to sleep, they are reactivated and my screens are returned to normal - so after about 2 minutes. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I might be looking for?
02:44<tripkin>The idea is to keep the screens running during the day, and blank them at night or when I am away from my desk.

03:16<ais-admin>tripkin, I have experienced soemthing similar. my solution was not to disable the screen saver but to leave it enabled adn set the timeouts to 0. This worked. later I discovered that by killing the screensaver process altogether I didnt need to worry about any of it.

18:16<p1zzzz>is there any way to translate an URL (port 80) to a complete URL without creating a webserver (locally)
18:16<p1zzzz>the file /etc/hosts cannot do that. Translate ip/domain only
18:16<p1zzzz>I found something like local dns can do that (cname record). I was wandering if debian has an already built in command to do that
18:21<sqrt{not}>p1zzzz: not sure what you mean... can you give an example what you want translated from what to what ?
18:22<p1zzzz>I would like to type localhost (without port) on url bar and I got redirected to a youtube video
18:22<p1zzzz>(with non host part (http par ecc)
18:25<sqrt{not}>p1zzzz: sorry, still not sure what you mean
18:26<p1zzzz>I want to go on a browser and type the an address (say http://localhost ) and get redirected to http://youtube.com/watch?v=abcdef ...
18:27<p1zzzz>in short an URL translation/mapping
18:29<sqrt{not}>p1zzzz: maybe "localhost" isn't a good example, because it already has various special meanings in a unix system.
18:30<p1zzzz>Ok, let's say 127.0.0.1
18:31<p1zzzz>can i go to http://127.0.0.1 and get redirected to a youtube video ?
18:33<sqrt{not}>I think that conflicts with what you said: "without creating a webserver (locally)"
18:34<p1zzzz>oh, ok. So the solution is create a webserver that responds with a redirect page. isn't it ?
18:34<blast007>you would need something that would return an HTTP response, so a web server, a reverse proxy, or something similar
18:34<p1zzzz>* the only solution
18:36<p1zzzz>Ok. Any suggestion about an easy to use reverse proxy ?

22:49<samantha->i've currently got long tests running on all eight, but that's not making them light up. very frustrating. i managed to get them to light up with dd, but i was hoping for a better, more intuitive utility.
22:55<sqrt{not}>There is some physical testing capability in the options of e2fsck I think
22:58<samantha->does that work if the drives aren't partitioned properly? right now they're fdisk'd to be in a raid array, although the array is dead now.
23:04<sqrt{not}>hmmm, it looks like maybe badblocks(8) is more what you are looking for, it has options for destructive write/read of the raw device it looks like.
23:05<blast007>do the errors on boot have any indication of device name?
23:06<samantha->the most recent one is throwing errors eg "ata20.03: failed command: READ FPDMA QUEUED", but i've been unable to translate the drive indicator ata20.03 to anything i can use.
23:07<samantha->my best guess is that ata20 is /dev/sdl but i'm not certain
23:10<samantha->some of the errors get thrown by the bios during post
23:10<samantha->that's even more confusing because of the number of drives

23:11<blast007>near the start of my dmesg output, it writes out what the various ataX.YY devices are
23:13<blast007>(well, I guess more like around the middle of mine, at around 1 second of uptime)
23:15<blast007>hmm, nvm, I was thinking it was showing a serial number, but I guess that's just the model number.
23:16<samantha->yeah i've got 8 drives spread over three or four manufacturers, but at least four of the drives are all the same model
23:16<samantha->http://paste.debian.net/1080302/
23:17<blast007>samantha-: does this give you the info you need? ls -l /dev/disk/by-path/
23:20<samantha->no. it doesn't list every drive, for one, and it doesn't seem to match dmesg. for example, /dev/sda is listed in by-path as pci-0000:00:1f.2-ata-1, but in dmesg it's listed as ata3.01 (see line 783 of the dmesg paste)

23:23<blast007>are these drives in some sort of multi-drive enclosure that connects back to the mobo with a shared SATA cable?
23:23<samantha->yes. 2x4 drive jbods, each on one esata connection
23:24<samantha->worked as part of a 10 drive raid6 for years before the drives started going to shit :)

23:35<sqrt{not}>samantha-: can you manually connect the individual disks one at a time to torture them ?
23:36<samantha->i can pull three drives out of each jbod, leaving only one, and do it that way, but i can't connect them to the motherboard. the motherboard has four drives already connected, two damaged sata ports (connector ripped off at some point), and no free power ports on the power supply

23:46<sqrt{not}>That sounds like it would work...... I have an old USB -> SATA/or/IDE adapter which is very nice for such inquisitions, was pretty cheap when I bought it.
23:47<samantha->my question is what utility to use :)
23:48<sqrt{not}>if you don't mind destroying the contents, looks like badblock(8) might be worth a try
23:48<samantha->ya, contents aren't an issue
