02:03<jakethedog>hello debian friends. i'm hoping for some help. i updated my stretch install to buster and the one package that failed was ssh. i thought it was ok, since I was in ssh at the time, but eventually the connection dropped and ssh service was no longer up and a reboot did not bring it up, though my other services like openvpn worked as normal. i have now mounted the encrypted disk from a rescue boot but i don't know what to do to fix it.
02:03<jakethedog>here is a diff of my sshd_config vs the debian distributed default: https://0bin.net/paste/o0D8xZKXxz8kqFGV#I4iuGYky2UwYGdZISsIWp0YDHBtFDHYJexl6x6aTqhU

06:59<at0m>gass: there's different ways to shutdown. how did you try to do it?
07:00<at0m>gass: i can think of "shutdown -h now", "poweroff", "init 0", or your DE/WM's menu option
07:01<gass>at0m, well ... it seems that the pc freezes accessing some hardware piece. using discover and laptop-mode-detect freezes the system. Using intel-microcode also
07:01<gass>if i boot into recovery without intel-microcode installed, discover works and reboot also
07:01<gass>at0m, ^^
07:02<at0m>maybe it shuts down the OS, just doesn't poweroff?
07:02<gass>i think the os freezes shuting down
07:03<gass>because if i go into maintenaince mode and reboot, it reboots correctly
07:03<gass>at0m, basically, something seems to be causing this

07:05<CheetahPixie>Morning, folks.
07:05<CheetahPixie>I have a few laptops on the way I want to resell, loaded with Debian.
07:05<at0m>gass: and what command do you issue to poweroff?
07:05<gass>at0m, reboot
07:05<CheetahPixie>The issue is, I have no idea how, if possible, to make it so that it is an OEM install.
07:05<gass>at0m, using reboot
07:05-!-dpkg [~dpkg@dpkg.bot.oftc.net] has joined #debian
07:05-!-dpkg is "apt backup" on #debian
07:05<CheetahPixie>Whereby I configure certain things and then "hand it off" to the first-time setup, like with Ubuntu.
07:06<CheetahPixie>at0m: poweroff to shut down, reboot to, well... reboot
07:06<at0m>CheetahPixie: i can think of "shutdown -h now", "poweroff", "init 0", or your DE/WM's menu option
07:07<CheetahPixie>Well, there's tons of choices.
07:07<at0m>gass: hmm.. not sure there. "init 6" reboots, too
07:07<at0m>gass: i'd go by checking system logs..
07:07<CheetahPixie>So, to my question.
07:07<CheetahPixie>Does Debian have anything resembling Ubuntu's OEM install?
07:08<CheetahPixie>Or a simpler installer, I guess with another priority level.
07:09<gass>CheetahPixie, google seems to say that there is no such thing in debian
07:11<CheetahPixie>Thought you folks here would know best.
07:12<CheetahPixie>Its absence is mentioned two years ago.
07:13<CheetahPixie>And I need something, anything, OEM installable for armhf.
07:14<CheetahPixie>Debian has armhf, seemingly no OEM install.
07:14<CheetahPixie>Ubuntu has OEM install, no armhf.
07:14<CheetahPixie>Fedora has both, I think? But offers only server images.
07:14<at0m>CheetahPixie: maybe have a look at how raspbian goes about it
07:16*at0m isn't that familiar with pre- and post-install(ation) scripts
07:16<at0m>but raspbian and ubuntu have them, so maybe see how they do it
07:17<CheetahPixie>Raspbian has one?
07:17<CheetahPixie>Interesting. I had no idea.
07:17<CheetahPixie>But if I can use something that currently exists, that would be great.

12:34<lapin>Hello. I'm new to IRC, so I apologize if I'm in the wrong channel. I'm trying to download the debian 9.9 ISO torrent file, but it's not working. I was wondering if anyone else is having the same problem.

12:39<sarnold>lapin: "not working" is a bit vague :) what did you try? did you get any error messages?
12:39<lapin>I have downloaded the .torrent file. It's the ISO that I have problems downloading. I've added it to the Bittorrent client. It download for less than half a minute in the beginning than it stopped.

12:40<lapin>I've tried this twice and got the same result. I'm using qbittorrent v3.3.7
12:41<lapin>there were no error messages
12:41<sqrt{not}>lapin: what is the name of the .iso you are downloading, and what is the size of your partial file ?
12:42<lapin>name: debian-9.9.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso.torrent size: 40.7 MiB
12:42<sarnold>lapin: so it just kind of stalls there, not making any further progress?
12:45<lapin>yes. I tried downloading it on the 28 and left it until today. Today I deleted it from the download queue and added it again. It's been stalling for a few hours.
12:46<sarnold>the usual cause for this kind of torrent behaviour is that you've got a NAT firewall between your torrent machine and the internet, and it isn't doing any port forwarding through to your computer
12:47<sarnold>sometimes the routers will have a "select applications to let through" that includes torrents .. sometimes you have to port-forward specific ports yourself, and then configure your torrent client to advertise the port that is forwarded through..
12:48<sarnold>sometimes if you force a tracker refresh your client might then reach out to the reachable peers and request new blocks.. but that might only be something my client did

19:16<celsius>So do you think you can "clone" the three logical volumes that I encrypted with luks (swap, root, home) in the new SSD?
19:17<Blendie>yes if it's just not too small
19:19<Blendie>what ytou need to do to is search for the device nodes in /dev, /dev/sda1, /dev/sd2 and such, then find out which ones of them you want to clone, then configure the partition table for the target device, and finally dd the files and finalize the process
