12:43<eudc78>Also, what is the difference between firmware-linux and firmware-linux-nonfree? The one installed in my Debian system is the firmware-linux-free one and that I understand. But what's that specific package that doesn't have the free/nonfree suffix in it?

12:49<petn-randall>eudc78: the -free package contains only free software in form of firmware. the -nonfree usually does contain firmware that is proprietary, but distributable.
12:50-!-mode/#debian [+l 386] by debhelper
12:50<petn-randall>eudc78: For each specific firmware-* package, it depends on the section it's in if it's free software or not: main or non-free.
12:54<sqrt{not}>eudc78: also, I don't think you can subdivide firmware-linux into specific firmware packages, it is one big package, I don't think the individual firware blobs are packaged individually
12:57<sqrt{not}>eudc: similarly, firmware-linux-nonfree pulls in 2 packages (firmware-amd-graphics and firmware-misc-nonfree) and suggests 2 microcode blobs. THus only slightly more divisible...
12:59<sqrt{not}>ehhh, above when I said "firmware-linux" is one big package, I should have said "firmware-linux-free"
13:01<sqrt{not}>actually firmware-linux is a virtual package that just pulls in both firmware-linux-free and also firmware-linux-nonfree
13:02<eudc78>so to get everything, it's just easier to go with the firmware-linux?
13:02<eudc78>And when I install that, the system will automatically know which one to use depending on the hardware in the system? No need to install anything more?
13:03<sqrt{not}>yes, if everything is what you want. yes, the system looks for specific firmware when it initializes specific bits of hardware
13:08<eudc78>If I install the firmware-linux package from stretch backports, then I take it that the system won't be using the stable firmware-linux-free that is installed by default, correct?
13:09<eudc78>Also, is there a driver that is both present in the free and nonfree meta packages? If so, which one will the system use if both packages are installed?
13:11<petn-randall>minor nitpick: It's a metapackage. Virtual packages are something slightly different in apt context.
13:12<petn-randall>eudc78: Firmware is either free or non-free, there's no firmware for a device that exists in both.
13:13<eudc78>Got it
13:16<eudc78>thanks!

13:49<stiin>I'm having two issues with audio in firefox-esr on Debian testing, but I'm not sure how to diagnose either of them, so I'd really appreciate some hints. I see nothing in .xsession-errors or dmesg that points to a problem.
13:49<stiin>1) Whenever I try to play audio (mostly from YouTube), the first few seconds are sometimes entirely silent. This often happens when I haven't played audio in a while, but sometimes even while playing audio in another tab. Hard to reproduce.
13:49<stiin>2) Sometimes, but I'm not sure how to trigger it (sometimes it's just opening a new tab), a heavily distorted crackling echo of a few seconds later is mixed together with the sound. The situation resolves itself after a few minutes, or immediately when I say 'pactl exit'.

20:17<op1um>hello, I am building a custom iso installer and i was wondering: Is it okay to install a lot of unecessary firmware in my system ? I want to install a lot of firmware/drivers (even unecessary drivers) automatically during the installation of my custom system to have a great compatibility with the various machines where I will install the system

20:18<op1um>Does it slow the kernel somehow ? any issues with that ?
20:18<ach>the firmware is every install?
20:18<ach>i mean you can do apt download?
20:19<ach>ref rofl
20:20<op1um>I can but I already downloaded various firmware .deb and included them in the installer, so the installer does not need to download them

20:24<op1um>in my current system, with less firmware installed than in the installer I build the kernel boot in: 42.729s
20:25<op1um>when my installer will be finished I will compare the boottime
20:30<rant>firmware is not even looked at unless a driver is loaded which needs it
20:30<rant>the firmware is loaded onto a device by a driver which has an alias to claim said device..
20:31<rant>so there should be no impact on firmware being on any given media which is never even looked at for any reason
20:31<ach>!split
20:31<dpkg>methinks split is what the name says, it splits files into pieces. split --bytes=1400000 FILE FILE_ to split; cat FILE_* > FILE to merge. or, when one or more freenode servers disconnect from the others: this shows up as a bunch of "Signoff: xxx (Connection reset by peer)"

20:33<rant>op1um: we have a firmware installer image already you know..
20:33<blast007>!firmware images
20:33<dpkg>Unofficial <netinst> and DVD installer images containing non-free Debian firmware packages are available for installing Debian 9 "Stretch". See http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/current/ and ask me about <install guide>.
20:33<rant>op1um: though if you feel need to build one with newer kernel and custom firmwares, go right ahead.. just know we already have one
20:34<op1um>rant: I know, but I am building my own image with the packages I use, and my settings ect
20:35<rant>I personally dont install that frequently to need such a thing.. but I suppose if you are doing installs on a massive scale it would be handy
