05:59<goonieb>hello, I was wondering if there existed a solution that archives versions of packages installed so that you can revert more easily (as in for instance using unstable and a package breaks everything, yet,, insted of running lvm or something you'd just rollback)
06:01<jm_>!sdn
06:01<dpkg>http://snapshot.debian.org/ is an archive of almost all Debian packages uploaded since 2005, including those removed from the official archives because they were very buggy, unusable, broken, vulnerable or in some way non-free. This service replaces snapshot.debian.net. http://www.debian.org/News/2010/20100412
06:02<goonieb>jm_: thanks, ok I know about snapshots, but I meant locally
06:03<jm_>goonieb: for that keep your local cache? or mirror whatever you need (several tools are available for that)
06:03<goonieb>jm_: ,yes, that's what I am looking for
06:04<jm_>goonieb: https://wiki.debian.org/DebianRepository/Setup?action=show&redirect=HowToSetupADebianRepository#Debian_Repository_Mirroring_Tools
06:04<goonieb>jm_: an idea of tool?
06:05<jm_>goonieb: aptly is quite flexible, debmirror too
06:05<goonieb>jm_: thank you a lot, will look into them
06:05<jm_>no problem

23:03<twb>How does the relation between linux-headers-X and linux-compiler-gcc-Y work?
23:03<twb>Up until recently I've been getting linux and zfs-dkms from stretch-backports, and they've been happy with the stretch (non-backport) gcc.
23:04<twb>But right now, the backported 4.19 kernel headers wants linux-compiler-gcc 4.14 --- 4.14 ≠ 4.19
23:05<ksk>twb: which gcc is in stretch?
23:05<ksk>,v gcc
23:05<judd>Package: gcc on amd64 -- jessie: 4:4.9.2-2; stretch: 4:6.3.0-4; buster: 4:8.3.0-1; sid: 4:8.3.0-1; experimental: 4:9-20181127-1

23:06<twb>I'm just curious as to what causes the cutoffs to appear
23:06<ksk>,v linux-compiler-gcc
23:06<judd>No package named 'linux-compiler-gcc' was found in amd64.
23:06<twb>I suspect it's along the lines of "if you enable CONFIG_FOO, you need gcc >= BAR"
23:07<twb>ksk: linux-headers-4.19.0-0.bpo.5-amd64 Depends linux-compiler-gcc-6-x86 (>= 4.14.17-1~)
23:07<ksk>,v linux-compiler-gcc-6-x86
23:07<judd>Package: linux-compiler-gcc-6-x86 on amd64 -- stretch: 4.9.168-1; stretch-proposed-updates: 4.9.168-1+deb9u2; stretch-security: 4.9.168-1+deb9u2; stretch-backports: 4.19.37-3~bpo9+1
23:08<ksk>twb: soo, get this package via backports, too and have fun? :)
23:08<twb>ksk: yes, I am doing that. I am just curious as to what causes those edges to appear
23:08<ksk>you are asking about the background of that requirement, mhm..
23:08<twb>From debian/changelog, this looks relevant:
23:08<twb> * Rebuild for stretch-backports: ▒ - [x86] Add versioned (build-)dependencies on gcc-6 for retpoline support ▒
23:09<sarnold>heh, yeah, that looks like it'd do the trick :)
23:09<twb>I guess to see all the edges I'd need to clone the repo and the git log -Glinux-compiler-gcc -- debian/control
23:10<ksk>ah, retpoline, thats one of them security related CPU Bug thingys (spectre etc..)
23:10<somiaj>that was a kernel workround for the meltdown cpu flaw
23:11<sarnold>one of the spectres
23:11<ksk>seems to me linux-compiler-gcc is maintained by kernel.org, so they most likely did a kernel change that did require a compiler change (like retpoline, for example?)
23:12<twb>Interestingly, I also built an out-of-apt kernel module for a stupid DVB-T receiver, and it didn't actually break, even though I'm building its module with non-backports gcc
23:12<twb>It might only affect certain modules
23:13<sarnold>hmm, was CONFIG_RETPOLINE set on that kernel config for that system?
23:14<twb>it should b- oh!
23:14<twb>That stupid tuner driver isn't compatible with backport kernel, so that's why I didn't see a problem
23:14<twb>It's being held back at non-bpo kernel
23:15<twb>It's really awful. Instead of just shipping their driver, they ship a fork of the entire v4l stack. And the v4l build code doesn't provide any obvious easy way to say "use mainline for everything except the actual driver"
23:16<twb>And it ships as a tarball rather than a git repo, so it's nontrivial to extract their changes
23:17<sarnold>ugh :( annoying all around
23:17<sarnold>they'd have done everyone a great service if they had ujst shipped a patch file instead
23:18<sarnold>not as great a service as just sending the driver to the lkml and going through the hoops to get it added to the upstream kernel, of course, but you know hardware vendors..
23:18<twb>or pushed their bloody driver into mainline
23:19<twb>http://ix.io/1KrM/bash
23:23<twb>How come zfs-dkms is in contrib? CDDL is DFSG, isn't it?
23:23<sarnold>twb: *wow*
23:24<sarnold>twb: it was mentioned in this mail https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2019/05/msg00468.html -- hopefully that's a good enough string to start pulling on if you want to find the Real Answer
23:25<twb>That first part of the email is Super Scary!
23:26-!-ttelford [zncsrv@2601:681:4100:8981:44dd:acff:fe85:9c8e] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
23:26<ksk>ah, that story.
23:29<jakethedog>Something weird just happened. I am on Buster and this morning I made an edit to one of my personal systemd services. systemctl daemon-reload and changes worked fine, but there is a weird error message about "/bin/systemd-tty-ask-password-agent: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libkmod.so.2: invalid ELF header" and now I am finding that some of my binaries will not execute "-bash: ./md5sum: cannot execute
23:29<jakethedog> binary file: Exec format error" the weird part is this: "file ./md5sum" returns "./md5sum: data"
23:30<twb>I've been planning to deploy zfs 0.8.0-final on debian 10 as my main server. I did some fio timings and it didn't look Super Slow, apart from dpkg installs (due to dpkg fsync spam).
23:30<sarnold>jakethedog: dmesg?
23:31<twb>jakethedog: 1. are your backups OK?; 2. do SMART (and maybe e2fsck) check; 3. do debsums check
23:31<twb>If necessary, do it from a forensic live image, rather than from itself
23:38<jakethedog>what am i looking for in dmesg? my backups are a bit dated... can't install debsums or smartctl packages (apt gives the same error about format). this is on a vps and I am wary of rebooting at this point.
23:38<twb>if it's a VPS then you probably don't have disks in the first place
23:39<twb>It sounds to me like something has seriously broken your root filesystem
23:39<sarnold>if I were in that situation I'd start an rsync of data I cared about to another host, perhaps even on another provider, asap
23:39<twb>I agree
23:39<twb>I'd generally try to work out what happened, so you can stop it happening again
23:42<sarnold>yeah; once the data is backed up, such as it can be, then it'd be worthwhile trying to understand it
23:42<sarnold>iirc the last time I saw this, someone's SD card on their embedded arm dev board was dying
23:43<sarnold>that's unlikely at a cloud provider, but just today I saw a *very* scary bug report about data corruption due to using bcachefs compiled by gcc9.. which seems VERY likely from a hosting provider
23:44<twb>bcachefs is where the guy who makes the stand-alone equivalent of l2arc went and said "rather than merging this into btrfs, I'm just gonna make my own fs", right?
23:45<sarnold>that's my understanding, yesx
23:48<twb>I think that was the final straw for me :-)
23:48<twb>in the zfs vs. btrfs decision
23:48<sarnold>since I already had zfs it didn't feel particularly like a step forward, hehe
23:49-!-dvs [~hibbard@00012127.user.oftc.net] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
23:49<twb>sarnold: different annoyances for each, for me
23:49<twb>sarnold: e.g. EFI has better btrfs than zfs drivers
23:50<sarnold>twb: hah, I've got a half-installed machine sitting int he basement, trying to get luks + efi + zfs root going.. I haven't touched it in several weeks :(
23:51<twb>sarnold: Great News!
23:51<twb>sarnold: ZFS has native encryption now
23:51<twb>sarnold: you can even zfs send incremental backups to a host that *can't decrypt them*
23:52<sarnold>twb: I'm *very* much looking forward to that! :D
23:52<twb>https://github.com/zfsonlinux/zfs/releases/tag/zfs-0.8.0 (currently only in Debian NEW/experimental)
23:57<twb>sarnold: btw my crappy workaround for /boot-on-zol-0.8 is http://ix.io/1Jcn (not safe with dracut)
23:58<sarnold>twb: oh wow that's cool.
23:58<sarnold>twb: also, I *love* how you've documented and automted your own personal setup.
