00:25<mendelmunkis>is it possible to change the version number on a built package?
00:31-!-dvs [~Heubert@00012127.user.oftc.net] has quit [Quit: Outta here!]
00:35<rant>mendelmunkis: why?
00:35<rant>this is one of the cases where youre prob asking the wrong question
00:36<mendelmunkis>I custom built ffmpeg with extra config options on a 64 bit system
00:36<mendelmunkis>where i have a few 32 bit libraries
00:36<rant>ok.. and the number matters because?
00:37<mendelmunkis>because of ffmpegs versioning i need the same version number across evrything or i lose about 15-20 other packages
00:37<mendelmunkis>that depend on the 32 bit version
00:37<rant>this is what equivs is for
00:37<rant>when youve satisfied a dependen y by other means
00:38<mendelmunkis>Right. I always forget about the right tool for a job and find a convoluted method instead.
00:38<mendelmunkis>thanks.
00:41<rant>mendelmunkis: happens to everyone you get zoomed in on an issue.. thats why we deb users sit in these channels to provide perspective to other users
00:42<rant>equivs was designed to make a shim to satisfy the dependency based package manager when you satisfied a dep by non standard means
00:46-!-DusXMT [~dusxmt@84.245.120.171] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:02<mendelmunkis>bonus fun: the old 32 bit version breaks the new 64 bit version. looks like i actually need to go edit the control files.

01:16<rant>its so easy to miss out on the fun of maintaining binary packages in Debian... heh.. when you get a taste of it you recall why you're not using gentoo :P
01:20<mendelmunkis>Actually gentoo would be easier for this. just add two line to the ebuild and presto.
01:21<mendelmunkis>I just realized that apt probably doesn't like a package depending on an older version of said package.
01:22<mendelmunkis>which means that equivs doesn't actually help me here. back to the drawing board it is

10:35<themill>!stretch-updates
10:35<dpkg>i heard stretch-updates is a suite providing updates to some packages (from <proposed-updates>) prior to a <point release>. All packages from stretch-updates will be included in point releases. https://wiki.debian.org/StableUpdates . Not to be confused with <stretch/updates> which is for <security> updates.

10:44<paradoks17>Hello. I really need help. I am following https://libreboot.org/docs/gnulinux/encrypted_debian.html setting up Crunchbangplusplus distro. After https://libreboot.org/docs/gnulinux/encrypted_debian.html#booting-your-system inputing grub commands, error on boot: https://pastecode.xyz/view/029aaed4
10:47<paradoks17>Does the crunchbangplusplus distro misses necessary packages to boot encrypted drive? If so, how can I add to bootable usb?
10:47<nodiscc>paradoks17: you should be following https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/ instead, but I don't know if there is a chapter on LVM+LUKS installation ...
10:47<nodiscc>what does the command 'vgs" say?
10:48<paradoks17>im on ThinkPad X60s which is i686 arhitecture
10:50<bremner>!crunchbang
10:50<dpkg>CrunchBang Linux is a Live CD distribution originally based on <Ubuntu>, now based on Debian as of version 10, featuring the <Openbox> window manager. It is not supported in #debian. http://www.crunchbang.org/ #crunchbang on irc.freenode.net. See <based on debian>.
10:50<bremner>dunno about plus
10:50<bremner>!crunchbangplus
10:50<bremner>neither does the bot, apparently
10:52<paradoks17>thanks for reaching out.. After error comes BusyBox. (initramfs) vgs sh: vgs: not found
10:53<nodiscc>ah yes the lvm commands will not be available in initramfs
10:54<jelly>they will if your root fs is on lvm, but not the complete set
10:54<paradoks17>I got through with Debian 9.9.0, but then I was not able to recompile libreboot rom to 2mb file (https://libreboot.org/docs/gnulinux/grub_cbfs.html#without-re-flashing-the-rom)
10:54<nodiscc>try reinstallaing and following the assisted LVM + LUKS partitioning. it just works; you can change volume sizes later
10:55<jelly>paradoks17: /sbin/lvm vgdisplay
10:56<jelly>there should be a "lvm" and a "vgchange", but the handy symlinks are absent
10:56<paradoks17>WARNING: Failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to device scanning. :/
10:56<jelly>paradoks17: that's okay
10:56<nodiscc>jelly: good to know
10:56<jelly>because lvmetad is in fact not running during initrd.
10:57<paradoks17>link would be handy, im early linux user
10:58<jelly>if you're early why are you doing rather complex libreboot stuff
10:58<nodiscc>paradoks: initially what you're trying to do is to run libreboot?
11:00-!-dvs [~hibbard@00012127.user.oftc.net] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
11:00<jelly>in any case, if you're doing lvm on top of luks, make sure initrd did a cryptsetup luksOpen ... before looking for lvm bits
11:02<jelly>if you're doing things manually it's easy to forget to edit /etc/crypttab or to forget to rebuild initramfs after editing it
11:02<jelly>and if you end up with an initramfs that lacks LUKS support you're not going to be able to proceed with booting
11:03<paradoks17>the machine is flashed and libreboot startup is ok, so as grub. After trying out bunch of distros, CBPP sticks the most. I know Ill get the recompiled rom with configured grub to work somehow, but for now at least i could set up my favorite distro that actually is nothing more that Debian.

20:24<subu>Looks like it worked. Thank you so much somiaj.
20:29<somiaj>as I sated a while ago, make sure you have the linux-headers from stretch-backports installed. The module cannot build otherwise.

20:32<mendelmunkis>Whats the safest way to remove an old debootstrap dir?
20:33<mendelmunkis>in other words is rm -rf . likley to destroy something somewhere else?
20:35<somiaj>make sure you don't have any mount --binds, or what not still inside that dir, and you'll be fine.
20:36<somiaj>(sometimes for chroots or using debootstrap you may mount otherthings inside the target directory) -- provided you don't have any of these you'll be fine)
20:37<mendelmunkis>somiaj: thanks. the folder is a copied partition from 3 computers ago so i cant remeber what i did when i set it up.
20:38<somiaj>you can look at the output of 'mount' to double check, but most likely you are fine. I delete chroots regurally this way.
