06:28<mojikun>hey whats the difference between the security updates (stretch/updates from security repo) and the plain "updates" (stretch-updates from main repo)?
06:28<dpkg>stretch-updates is probably a suite providing updates to some packages (from <proposed-updates>) prior to a <point release>. All packages from stretch-updates will be included in point releases. . Not to be confused with <stretch/updates> which is for <security> updates.
06:29<mojikun>do the plain updates contain only new features and the security ones , security bugfixes and critical bug changes?

06:40<themill>!sid security
06:40<dpkg>There is no security support for unstable (sid) at all. Uploads of new packages that fix security vulnerabilities are handled in the same way as any other new version -- this means it's up to the maintainer to do a new upload and you (perhaps) to reconfigure services to cope with the new version. This is one of the reasons unstable is not suitable for day-to-day use in many situations. Also ask me about <moving target>.
06:42<mojikun>!testing security
06:42<dpkg>Security updates in testing are delayed by the normal testing migration *and* may be further delayed by missing dependencies, etc. See ; «deb bullseye-security main» can be used (but will be empty).

06:43<mojikun>thats good

06:45<dpkg>Sure, testing might be shinier than stable, but are you prepared to be continually updating your system? Things that worked today will break tomorrow. Configuration file formats will change and you'll have to fold your changes in yet again. Testing is a moving target and if you'd rather work *with* your computer than working *on* your computer, you might not want that. See <testing security>.

10:51<Nirgal>Hi there. I just updated to Buster. I run xfce. Applications using qt (kmail, qbitorrent) don't show on the system tray anymore. Any idea how to fix that?
10:53<benoit>Hello! I'm back. Still need help :). So : fresh install of debian 10, dual boot windows 10. Grub OK, Win 10 OK. Debian launch only in command line. During install I have chosen both KDE and Cinnamon. I would expect debian to start on graphical mode, with a screen allowing me to chose between both DE. Once logged on TTY1, I can start Cinnamon with 'startx' command.
10:54<benoit>But it warns me that it's using software render as result of an issue with my graphic card (AMD RADEON R9 290, HAWAII). I did not report this a few minutes ago beacause I wanted to fix an issue after the other, but it might be related...

11:02<benoit>Nirgal, Yes sure, it's what i'm expecting to have also, but I don't (on a fresh new install). This GUI frontend is supposed to be sddm with KDE, which is actually running, but only TTY1 shows no GUI.

13:37<caioau>Hi! Im migrating to buster! I want to know, I use firejail, should I use by installing via the debian package (apt install firejail) or compile myself? Im worried that the version shipped in Debian is vulnerable to some CVE, that the upstream is not. Thanks
13:37<andrea15>:sqrt{not} thanks
13:37-!-oo_miguel [] has quit [Quit: WeeChat 1.6]
13:38<jmcnaught>caioau: is the CVE listed here?
13:40<jmcnaught>caioau: it's usually better to use Debian packages. The Debian security team backports security fixes to the stable release, so even if upstream firejail has a security flaw it doesn't mean that Debian's version does.

18:31<connor_>This made the whole system extremely slow. The mouse and keyboard were extremely laggy, the GUI was painfully laggy too, and it took me over an hour to fix it.

18:32<blast007>did you install the nvidia drivers from the Debian repos, or from upstream
18:32<connor_>From upstream
18:32<connor_>I got the 430 version
18:32<connor_>It works great now that I have the Nvidia drivers
18:33<connor_>It would be way better if they would just include the drivers in the installer. llvmpipe must have been the root of the problem
18:33<EmleyMoor>The main problem is that nvidia drivers are non-free
18:33<blast007>debian's normal installer does not include non-free software or firmware
18:33<connor_>Oh, ok. What about mesa?
18:34<connor_>That would still be better than llvmpipe
18:34<blast007>for the future, this is the recommended way to get the proprietary nVidia drivers (though the info doesn't yet specifically cover buster):

18:57<prasket>@connor_ I am also running into issues with Nvidia card and default drivers. Trying to install from non-free right now to see if that resolves it.
18:58<prasket>My issue is that gdm3 locks up on boot, xfce is working fine though that is how I am in installing those nvidia drivers
18:59<connor_>@prasket Like I said, I fixed it by installing the proprietary nvidia drivers.
19:00<prasket>Ahh missed that, ill try those if this doesnt work out
19:00<connor_>Ok, that sounds good.

19:02<connor_>I would be typing "how to install nvidia drivers on debian" and after a whole minute, it would type "hooooooooooow toooo inssssssssstallll nvvvvvvidia drrrrrrrrivers on debiaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan"
19:02<prasket>ahh that stinks.. Looks like my issue is fixed by installing from non-free :D
19:03<connor_>This never happened with any other distro. The nvidia drivers fixed it.
19:03<connor_>The mouse was really wonky too. It would be really laggy and it would take ages to move the mouse enough to click on something.
19:04<connor_>I keep a few spare mice and keyboards laying around, so I tried those, and those had the same problem too.
19:07<connor_>If you're having trouble with disabling Nouveau, you have to create a file called blacklist-nouveau at /etc/modprobe.d/, then add some stuff to it, and THEN you have to regenerate the kernel initramfs.
19:08<connor_>the tutorial I was using didn't have that last step in it, so the installer always thought that nouveau was still enabled.

19:56<jmcnaught>zanc: I believe that it is a component of the installer that configures networking, not a script that you can run after the system is installed but I could be wrong.
