00:00<wylel>Hmm, seems the list say there is not a pkg-php-maint mailing list, but does that mean the email no longer works?

00:07<twb>But unrelatedly(?) the lvcreate manpage mentions lvmlockd, which is part of lvm2 but isn't installed by defaul
00:07<twb>Is lvm2-lockd for when you have iSCSI PVs that are shared between different computers?

00:18<netinho>Okay, I know how to speak English.
00:18<netinho>I have a problem with Debian.
00:19<netinho>Can you help me?
00:19<wylel>What is the issue?
00:22<netinho>How I'm with Kernel panic
00:22<netinho>* I'm with Kernel panic.
00:23<netinho>How could I recover my PC?
00:24<ppc64>minor question here about creating a new ext4fs filesystem on a disk(ssd) drive. mke2fs warns me that /dev/sdd1 contains a zfs_member file system labelled 'vesta' and yet I had already run wipefs --all --force /dev/sdd previously. How does one really wipe out a previously labeled disk?
00:24<annadane>netinho, just for future reference i notice you started off with "hello" and didn't get answered; people saying "hello" and expecting engagement can end up being disappointed because 'hello' isn't a question, if you have a question it's often best to just ask it
00:24<annadane>people have said 'hello' and then leave when they don't get addressed
00:25<netinho>I'm sorry, I did not know that..
00:26<twb>netinho: we must know why the panic happened
00:26<twb>netinho: does the panic tell you a specific error? For example, that the root filesystem is not found.
00:27<twb>ppc64: wipefs -a should DTRT, but if the pool was in use when you did wipefs, possibly zfs "helped" you
00:27<netinho>Are you Debian developers?
00:27<twb>ppc64: did you zpool export before wipefs?
00:28<ppc64>twb: the disk came from another system ( freebsd ppc64 ) and so there isn't any zfs here on my Debian system x86_64
00:28<twb>ppc64: hrmmm
00:28<ppc64>twb: I don't need to export a zpool to remove a disk. The whole machine is disassembled and gone.
00:28<twb>ppc64: wipefs will wipe anything that blkid can see
00:28<ppc64>twb: good idea ! forget to check with blkid
00:28<annadane>i'm not
00:29<twb>ppc64: so either mke2fs can see something wipefs/blkid can't, or something prevented the wiping, or put the metadata back after the wiping
00:29-!-finn0 [] has left #debian []
00:29<ppc64>twb: bizarre ... I have seen this before after ripping a disk from a zpool ... must ask Theodore Tso whats up
00:30<twb>ppc64: I remember having some problems but I'm 95% sure it's because I had imported the pool on the host where Iwas wiping
00:30-!-netinho [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
00:32<annadane>why'd netinho leave :(
00:33<twb>annadane: hopefully they went to -br :-(
00:33<ppc64>twb: as I said .. this is just a disk. There is no ZFS here. In fact I finally managed to make progress on this little ssd :
00:33<twb>ppc64: understood. I was just making clear that I haven't seen YOUR problem before
00:36-!-jm_ [] has joined #debian

00:37<ppc64>twb: well I seem to have sorted it out. I once upon a time figured that dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdX bs=512 count=65536 would do the trick for disk X but I guess those days are gone
00:37<twb>ppc64: also need to zero the end of the disk
00:37<twb>ppc64: it getting annoying is why wipefs is a thing :-)
00:37<ppc64>twb: fiar enough ! yep ...
00:38*ppc64 *nod*

00:39<ppc64>very cool --> blkdiscard [options] [-o offset] [-l length] device
00:39<ppc64>never saw that before .. or needed it .. must try that out
00:39<twb>hagom: which kernel package do you mean?
00:40<twb>hagom: ah, there was something specifically called "kernel-package" in oldoldstable and unstable
00:40<twb>hagom: I recommend you read the Debian Kernel Handbook because I think that package is mostly obsolete
00:41<twb>viz. "make deb-pkg" in anything from about 3.2 onwards
00:41<hagom>so how do I build a custom kernel?
00:41<twb>the handbook has full details

03:47<EmleyMoor>Anyone here familiar with "Ultimate Boot CD"? It comes with a script,, which is for creating a new ISO after customising. However, the script does not work, reporting ./ line 72: [: too many arguments - line 72 reads: if [ -d `cd "/${ISO_FILENAME%/*}" /dev/null 2>&1; echo "${PWD}"` ]; then - I have already modified it to cope with genisoimage instead of mkisofs... can anyone
03:47<EmleyMoor>advise? I'll pastebin the whole script as it ...
03:47<EmleyMoor>... stands in a moment
03:47<twb>EmleyMoor: that script is broken
03:48<twb>the immediate problem is they wrote `foo "bar"` instead of "$(foo "bar")"
03:48<twb>It's it's just generally crap quality, you can tell from that single line
03:49<twb>You should throw it away and use something with better error handling

03:50<EmleyMoor>twb: I'm not making Debian Live images
03:51<jm_>try running it with sh -x (or bash -x) to see why exactly it fails
03:51<twb>jm_: it's failing because $PWD has a space in it
03:51<jm_>maybe a dir with spaces?
03:51<jm_>twb: yeah my guess too
03:52<EmleyMoor>jm_: I very much doubt that unless it's done it itself.

03:53<EmleyMoor>twb: Create a version of UBCD lacking Parted Magic, for maintenance use. No Debian involved at this level apart from the fact it's what I'm using.
03:53<twb>so UBCD isn't even Debian-based?
03:54<EmleyMoor>Have now modified line 72 but the errors going forward are still there
03:54<EmleyMoor>No, it's self-based
03:54<twb>So what does it do that debian live can't do?
03:55<twb>Is the goal "I need to boot off a USB key, but this crappy old computer can only boot off a CD or a hard disk. So I put a USB bootloader onto a CDROM, and leave that CDROM in the disc drive"
03:56<EmleyMoor> - bash -x output with line 72 modified as per previous answer
03:56<EmleyMoor>twb: "Stuff that isn't Debian Live" is the best answer I can give.
03:56<blast007>twb: it's a bootable CD that contains a bunch of utilities
03:56<twb>yeah I was just looking through the list
03:57<twb>it looks like about half of it is FOSS debian stuff and half is awful non-free windowsy/hardwarey things
03:57<jm_>cd //home/phil /dev/null
03:57<jm_>missing > before /dev/null - I thought it was just your paste, but apparently not
03:57<twb>jm_: ah that is a bash4 -> bash5 regression
03:57<EmleyMoor>The goal is "I want the content, minus Parted Magic, as an iso I can burn to CD or write to USB for when I need it
03:57<EmleyMoor>jm: Ah
03:58<twb>in bash4 and earlier, "cd /etc /canthappen" and "cd *" are valid; the extra args are simply ignored
03:58<EmleyMoor>Fixed that... next problem is down in line 96... will see if I can sort that myself
03:59<jm_>doesn't sound promising if someone relied on such a quirky bash behaviour :)

07:40<jm_>apparently uim-anthy is a meta package in buster
07:40<jm_>so I suppose it can be removed, but your problem is you're in the middle of upgrade

07:46<dpkg>In order to troubleshoot your problem with apt-get, apt or aptitude we need ALL OF THE FOLLOWING information: 1. complete output of your apt-get/apt/aptitude run (including the command used) 2. output from "apt-cache policy pkg1 pkg2..." for ALL packages mentioned ANYWHERE in the problem, and 3. 14:52<mq>right, thanks

14:57<jmcnaught>mq: visudo is just a wrapper than checks the syntax of the sudoers file before it is written to disk

19:05<ppc64>I have a silly question ... really .. why do 64-bit x86_64 Debian sid boxen have symlinks for /bin and /sbin whereas the 32-bit x86 boxen have separate dirs ??
19:06<ppc64>actually buster or stretch .. seen the same thing for years
19:07<EmleyMoor>ppc64: Explain please?
19:07<ppc64>EmleyMoor: on a 32-bit boxen ls -ladin /bin /sbin /usr/bin /usr/sbin will show separate dirs and inodes nums
19:08<jmcnaught>ppc64: I think you're talking about this:
19:08<ppc64>EmleyMoor: on a 64-bit boxen /bin -> usr/bin and /sbin -> usr/sbin
19:08<EmleyMoor>ppc64: Er, no, not on mine...
19:08<ppc64>huh .. wow
19:09<ppc64>I don't recall ever asking for a usrmerge pkg or anything like that .. this is what I get on default basic install
19:09<ppc64>however now I have to fire up a vmware vm and test it
19:09<EmleyMoor>My install goes bback a few versions
19:10<ppc64>hrmm .. I have multiple systems but a very recent unit has 7 Dec 15 2018 as the date on the symlinks
