07:17<aindilis>My `date` format has changed after an `apt-get --fix-broken install` somehow and it's messing up my system
07:18<aindilis>Wed Dec 29 15:33:10 EST 2004 -> Sat 13 Jul 2019 07:14:16 AM EDT
07:18<aindilis>any ideas, the year got put after the month instead of after the TZ, and it now says "AM"
07:18<abrotman>how is that messing up your system?
07:18<aindilis>because i have code that parses out the date
07:19<aindilis>any ideas how to force a reversion to the previous format?
07:19<aindilis>or is this some new thing they're doing
07:19<aindilis>I upgraded libc6 to 2.28 I think
07:19<mikegrb>if you are relying on the date format you should specify it in the date command
07:20<abrotman>what kind of code? can you not specify the format of the "date" output to be what you want in your code?
07:20<aindilis>I could but i don't want to fix everything now since there's a lot of these
07:20<Vergo>I'd start by checking if the output of 'locale' is still what's expected
07:20<aindilis>ty!
07:21*abrotman would think one would want to fix the code to enforce a format you desire, so this doesn't happen in the future
07:21<aindilis>sure, I wasn't aware the format changed like this

12:27<yogiman>Greetings to all. I had a couple of Samba shares that I normally connect to using autofs and cifs-utils. This has always worked fine. Upgraded from Deb 9.9 to Deb 10. Can no longer get those mounts to work. Does anyone know why or if there are problems reported with cifs? I am making assumption because I also have an NFS share that is connecting correctly. Thanks.
12:28<GyrosGeier>you upgraded server, client or both?

19:48-!-dust [~dust@0001ff89.user.oftc.net] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
19:48<annadane>well, reboot of course also unmounts devices
19:49<friki>chungy: i thought its the opposite. When you copy (or dd) files into a fs, the device may be out of sync. When you dd to a device, it is synced at the end (or for each block when "sync/fsync" options are enabled)
19:50<chungy>"dd oflag=sync" could do it
19:50<annadane>like, you only need sync if you want to rip out the usb without typing umount /dev/sdx

20:01<chungy>dd's defining feature is converting files. Between ASCII and EBCDIC, or byte-swapping for endianness
20:01<chungy>as a straight-up copy, dd and cp will do the same job :)
20:02<friki>so we need to flush the cache for devfs?
20:03<friki>or it's directly at the device cache?
20:03<chungy>"sync /dev/sdx" will make the kernel flush all the cache
20:03<friki>sure
20:04<chungy>you don't need to worry about /dev itself
20:04<chungy>the basic form "sync FILE" should guarantee that FILE is completely written to storage
20:04<chungy>There are a few exceptions for file systems that have options to ignore sync requests... but this isn't one of them
20:05<friki>sync /home/me/test flush de cache at fs layer related to this file and all dirty blocks to disk (if i understand correctly)
20:06<chungy>You do
20:06<friki>in case of /dev/sdx ...
20:06<friki>there is a devfs in between
20:06<friki>probably no cache is used at this layer
20:06<friki>or for device blocks...
20:07<chungy>the kernel manages the cache for block devices per-device, it doesn't care much where the device file is stored or what it's called
20:09<friki>in any case, back to my first question... in my experience when i copy a dd into an usb drive it takes a while after reaching 100%. I can disconnect the usb and it works fine
20:10<friki>i've scripted a helper for copying some thousands of pendrives. And it seem it worked fine :-p (no news good news)
20:10<chungy>if you don't wait for it to finish, you are losing some data
20:10<friki>yes
20:11<friki>but when dd ends... it's absolutely burned in the device. So.. why sync after dd?
20:12<friki>i extend my question to "cp" (if copy acts as dd)
20:12<chungy>dd doesn't have such a guarantee by default.
20:12<friki>mmm any reason can explain it wastes loooot of time at 100%
20:13<friki>i've seen it last 15 years, or more
20:13<sqrt{not}>the write heads move slower when more of the disk is magnetized, obviously
