00:01<annadane>just that i've been entering the root pw when prompted
00:01<annadane>this is the first time it's done this
00:03<annadane>if that ends up fixing it, sure, whatever, but it's a bit of a hack
00:03-!-rck [~rck@201.111.13.186] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:03<jmcnaught>I put my user in the libvirt group, I don't see the harm in it.

00:20<annadane>who knows
00:21<annadane>i didn't even try starting virt-manager as root, shame, would've been a valuable data point

01:31<jmcnaught>!apt suite changed
01:31<dpkg>If you were already using Debian 10 "Buster" prior to it being released as stable, or you use 'testing' in your sources.list, apt-get will complain about changes to the release information on the mirror. apt(8) will prompt you to accept changes; apt-get(8) will need --allow-releaseinfo-change

01:32<JGalt>thanks for the note on the RC bug. I setup buster months ago so that things would continue to track buster when buster went stable.
01:32<JGalt>thanks, I'm still used to using apt-get by habbit

05:35<adhawkins>Hi all. Is there a 'correct' way to back up the list of installed packages on a Debian machine so that it could be imported into a 'clean' install if required? Or should I just regularly be saving the output of 'dpkg --get-selections' and backing that up?

05:47<jm_>adhawkins: that's the easiest way AFAIK
05:47<_kab>I'm not 100% certain. I had it a couple of times during random maintenance jobs and once during system startup
05:47<jm_>adhawkins: debian keeps a backup of (some) dpkg stuff in /var/backups - it's easy to extract package list from those too
05:48<_kab>Can't tell where exactly its originating from. I can't reproduce it either. Calling the scripts in question manually will not show that message.

05:58<adhawkins>Thanks for the advice all. I routinely backup /etc, /var/lib/dpkg and /var/lib/apt. Just recently had a thought that doing this won't necessarily include the list of installed packages.
05:58<adhawkins>(These are all backed up every hour using borg)
06:00<adhawkins>Ideally I'd like to have a list of packages I've explicitly installed, not all the dependencies that those packages have then brought in (that way, if I later remove a package it can tell me about unused packages automatically)
06:00<adhawkins>Looks like --get-selections just says 'install' for all installed packages, however they were installed?

11:12<twb>EmleyMoor: right
11:13<twb>EmleyMoor: the only reason I'm using gdm instead of xdm is because gdm runs X as non-root user, which is a bit safer
11:13<GyrosGeier>twb, session type is per-user
11:13<GyrosGeier>so you have to select "Xsession" instead of Gnome once after entering the user name but before entering the password
11:13<twb>so inside gdm3 I clicked on my username, then clicked the cog icon, which offers me a choice of sessions
11:14<GyrosGeier>and that should get saved into the reg^W^Wgconf
11:14<twb>It offers "Default X session", and some GNOME 3 sessions. It was set to "Default X session". That *should* mean my .xsession.
11:14<GyrosGeier>indeed
11:14<GyrosGeier>default X session is /etc/X11/Xsession, which defers to ~/.xsession
11:14<twb>FFS
11:14<GyrosGeier>is your .xsession file executable

20:29<ResidentAlien>my dist-upgrades went well but I'm a server enviro
20:29<ghormoon>cryptsetup-initramfs stopped detectin luks encrypted zfs drive (had root on it, so not booting until i downraded), nm not detecting wifis, X not opening sockets, some gui garbage installed and covered my bar ( i though my xmobar died) intil i nuked it ...
20:30<ghormoon>server had totally different set of issues, some zfs virtual package didn't update, so it held back few other tools around which led in some cycles in service dependencies in systemd having very funny issues from that as systemd killed random thing in the loop
20:31<ghormoon>took me a while to figure that out, as apt was thinking all is ok until i manually updated those
20:31<ResidentAlien>toibo - Debian (along with many other Linux's) uses the init system for startup and shutdown scripts. Google "Linux init system" there you will find a wealth of info on automating things during startup and shutdown.
20:32<ResidentAlien>sounds like a headache ghormoon - glad I didnt run into any of those problems

22:23<miketymike>I have a webserver at my home. Using wireguard, I connect to a VPS (in order to bypass ISP port blocks). The server works as expected (ports forward, letsencrypt cert installed), but I can't send emails from the server. It receives emails fine. I am thinking that outgoing emails are not using the wireguard tunnel, but I'm not sure. Can someone tell me how to troubleshoot this issue?

22:27<Passerby>miketymike: I might start by using a monitoring program that shows the network device being used, e.g. nethogs.

22:32<Passerby>If the interface for the mail-sending program shows up as wg0 (or whatever), then share your config with #wireguard on freenode. They're helpful.
