20:52<zombielinux>I've just dist upgraded from stretch to buster, and i'm having issues with my sas card (LSI Logic / Symbios Logic SAS2116) no longer finding any hard drives attached to it via an expander. all drives worked properly before when running on stretch
20:53<zombielinux>the controller appears fine in lspci, and dmesg doesn't show any ugly issues, it just doesn't think anything is attached
20:54<sarnold>zombielinux: there's an oldish webpage I visited once with some SAS expander tools..
20:55<sarnold>zombielinux: I'm not sure if this still represents the best way of doing things, but it's at least something beyond dmesg and lspci
20:56<zombielinux>thats true. I'm also using the LSIutils program as well
20:56<zombielinux>i got 6 of the many drives to populate
20:56<petn-randall>zombielinux: You might need firmware-linux?
20:56<zombielinux>6 of 22
20:57<zombielinux>petn-randall, is that the official package name?
20:57<petn-randall>Can you paste the dmesg output? →
20:57<petn-randall>zombielinux: yes, it's in non-free.
20:58<zombielinux>petn-randall, hmmm ok ill take a look
21:02<petn-randall>zombielinux: Are you using the RAID capabilities of the card, or are you just doing JBOD and using mdadm?
21:02<zombielinux>jbod using mdadm
21:02<petn-randall>I see
21:03<zombielinux>its kind of a crappy storage setup, but its what i've got to work with.
21:04<sarnold>< zombielinux> i got 6 of the many drives to populate
21:04<sarnold>does that mean that it originally started out with *none* and you did something to get to six? or is that just as many came up?
21:04<jmcnaught>zombielinux: that doesn't seem to be a Debian kernel, is it a proxmox kernel?
21:04<zombielinux>sarnold, i went in, jiggled the power connector on the sas expander, and rebooted the whole thing
21:05<zombielinux>jmcnaught, yes. it is. but the proxmox channels are less lively than the graveyards.
21:06<sarnold>zombielinux: jiggling the cable a bit more is about all I've got. maybe try pulling and reseating one of the drives that's not there?
21:07<zombielinux>sarnold, already tried that, swapped the sas cables around on the expander too, just in case. no dice, same 6 drives, no matter what ports they are connected to.
21:08<zombielinux>hmmmmm well this is interesting.
21:08<zombielinux>swapping the physical location of two drives in the enclosure brings the swapped drive up
21:09<zombielinux>but still only 6 drives at maximum
21:14<sarnold>hrmmmm :/
21:14<sarnold>zombielinux: alright... how about a smartos USB? ubuntu live USB? maybe OS has nothing to do with it

21:17<zombielinux>i'll give it a try, but i suspect the issue to lie somewhere in the OS. because it was working fine on proxmox 5.4/stretch
21:18<zombielinux>there are some jumpers/headers on the backplanes im connecting to, the question is what they do
21:20<sarnold>you'll have to find docs for that; the expander I've got I don't think it has any jumpers, so I'm not at all clear on what they might do :)
21:20<zombielinux>agreed. im having trouble finding the docs though

21:26<sarnold>perhaps you can anticipate my next question :)
21:27<sarnold>which six drives work? is that one per expander?
21:27<zombielinux>nope, the working drives belong to only one expander and half of another
21:27<zombielinux>and im not even sure its really an "expander"
21:27<sarnold>sata does port multipliers
21:27<zombielinux>its got 4 sata ports on the back, and only supports sata drives
21:28<zombielinux>so no SAS involved
21:28<sarnold>oh okay.. I assumed it was going to be one SAS lane each
21:28<zombielinux>nope, no such luck
21:31<ResidentAlien>ok I'm having a senior moment. Set up a new VM with Stretch (going to upgrade to Buster in a second but lost my buster CD) anyway... removed networkmanager and set up my /etc/network/interfaces with dhcp (that part is working) and set up options in /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf to supersede search and dns but the options in dhclient.conf are not having any effect unless I manually run dhclient after boot. What step did I miss?
