01:19<leo_>hello
01:19<annadane>hihi
01:20<leo_>so cool
01:20<leo_>this is my first time using hexchat / linux
01:20<leo_>What is this chat usually used for?
01:20<annadane>debian support questions
01:20<leo_>ah i see
01:22<leo_>hmmm, well I do have one question. I currently have parrot os installed on my thinkpad x61. How do I change my GUI/desktop environment? I would like something more minimalistic in design, cleaner.
01:22<annadane>!parrot
01:22<dpkg>Parrot OS (https://www.parrotsec.org/) is a security and penetration testing distribution. It is based on Debian testing, but it is not Debian and is not supported in #debian. Seek help in #parrotsec on Freenode, the community pages https://docs.parrotsec.org/community, or try the mailing lists at http://lists.parrotsec.org/listinfo. Also ask me about <based on debian>.
01:22<leo_>Can you recommend anything?
01:22<annadane>but you can probably just install it using packages and select if from your display manager on login
01:23<annadane>select it*
01:24<annadane>the choice of a GUI is purely subjective, it depends what you want
01:24<annadane>i use xfce, which is fairly minimalistic
01:25<leo_>How do I go about changing to xfce from mate?
01:25<annadane>as i said, you can install the packages for xfce and select between the two on your display manager on login
01:25<rwp>Install task-xfce-desktop package should install XFCE and all dependencies.
01:25<annadane>do note parrot isn't debian, and it's generally not supported here, but that should probably work on parrot as it does on debian
01:26<rwp>But remember Parrot OS is not Debian and we don't know what details they might do there.
01:26<leo_>ah I see
01:26<leo_>I'm fairly new to linux and am trying my best to understand it all
01:26<leo_>thank you for the information
01:26<annadane>leo_, starting with a pentesting distro probably isn't ideal
01:26<rwp>The bot factoid was that for Parrot OS one should join the #parrotsec channel.
01:27<annadane>it's up to you, but debian is general purpose and is probably a better starting point
01:27<annadane>i think parrot is slightly less insane to start with than kali, but still
01:28<leo_>there's no one on #parrotsec haha
01:29<rwp>leo_, That is probably a clue as to how much user support is available for it. Perhaps not a good choice for a first timer.

08:24<arziglio>hello everyone!!! I've a strange problem with my debian 9. This PC is connected to router using an ethernet cable. Every time i disconnect the cable and reconnect it, debian is no more visible on network. Even if i search in "conneted devices" in router meno it dind't appear. The only way to see server on network is to power off and restar the server. Since i don't have a monitor and use it only via SSH is a little bit frustratin
08:24<arziglio>i changed 3 routers but i have the same result :)
08:31<RaulFR>arziglio, I don't know, I came for help here too (writing my question). Just a question: when you reconnect cable to the debian machine, can you ping the IP address of the router?
08:32<RaulFR>(I mean ping the router from the machine you just reconnected to the network)
08:34<arziglio>no, i even cannot ping the machine

08:35<arziglio>it's fixed to 192.168.0.20 by router (routers)
08:35<arziglio>what do you mean with renewing dhcp lease?

08:36<arziglio>ok, understood

08:37<arziglio>since i'm a newbie iìm not an expert
08:37<RaulFR>you coul try renewing your DHCP lease by issuing command: dhclient
08:37<RaulFR>as root
08:37<RaulFR>or dhclient -r
08:38<arziglio>ok, but since that server isn't on the network and usable only via ssh i cannot type that command :)

08:48<RaulFR>ok, now my question to any person who can help here :-)
08:48<RaulFR>I am rescuing data on a disk from a "fried" new Dell laptop installed with Buster about a month ago (after a few weeks of working well, the laptop refuses to boot to Linux or Windows or to anything, Dell support diagnoses a hardware problem).
08:48<RaulFR>Anyway, I can access the data on the SSD disk with the Debian live disk, and I am in the process of compressing the /home directory to a .tgz file on a USD stick. So far, so good.
08:49<RaulFR>I would like to speed up the process of reinstalling everything on the replacement machine.
08:49<RaulFR>For that, I plan on saving the data recommended in the upgrade procedures https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/release-notes/ch-upgrading.en.html#data-backup
08:49<RaulFR>quoting that page: The main things you'll want to back up are the contents of /etc, /var/lib/dpkg, /var/lib/apt/extended_states and the output of dpkg --get-selections "*" (the quotes are important)
08:49<RaulFR>I can access the directories on the mounted disk, but how do I get the output of the output of dpkg --get-selections "*" for the rescued disk?
08:50-!-Guest678 [~user@182.76.108.3] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
08:52<pipedream>RaulFR: you can "chroot" into the SSD. First find out the /dev/sdX name of the SSD, by command fdisk -l, find out if it is sda or sdb or sdc etc.
08:52<pipedream>then mount the SSD drive into your live environment: sudo mount /dev/sdX /mnt
08:53<pipedream>Then sudo chroot /mnt to type commands inside the special root (SSD drive)
08:54<pipedream>(being dpkg --get-selections)
08:54<pipedream>then exit back to the live system
08:55<RaulFR>pipedream, ok I will try that, never used chroot in my life so far :-)

09:06<pipedream>probably not, though you can get exisiting known connections from /etc/NetworkManager/system-connctions and previus passwords from the file /etc/shadow, but you'd want to eventually not just replace the new system's /etc/shadow! only copy out the users' (encrypted) password, and if they were with you they could just reset it
09:06<pipedream>if they customised things there might be something in /opt or /user/local but they could also install those again the same way they did first time
09:07<RaulFR>ok, I see
09:07<RaulFR>thanks a lot pipedream
09:07<pipedream>and actually, if I was recovering I might not bother recovering all of those. All the packages can be installed again if you have good internet. Just recover /home/, and when you install, be sure not to format the drive, but keep the existing filesystem (on the new drive, with /home already copied into it, and use the same username again on the new system)
09:08<pipedream>easiest yet, reinstall, and copy the old /home onto the new user/drive' desktop, but they'd have access to their files only, not all the applications configuration settings, etc.

09:18<RaulFR>the Dell laptop is really fried, it won't boot on anything. For accessing the data on the SSD disk of that laptop, I had remove the SSD disk from it, buy a PCI adapter compatible with the SSD disk (which looks like a memory card), install that PCI adapted inside an existing desktop computer, and boot Debian live disk on that other computer

09:22<RaulFR>if that can serve for anybody in the future, the adapter I used to be able to rescue the SSD disk is: M.2 PCIE Adapter, ELUTENG NVMe SSD to PCI-E 3.0 x4 Card with Heat Sink and Thermal Pad for M.2 NGFF PCIe NVME or AHCI SSD M Key Support 2242 2260 2280 Hard Disk Drive
09:23<RaulFR>it works with Dell's SSD disks which they call "SSD M.2 PCIe NVMe Class 40"
09:25<blast007>there's even USB adapters for those, such as this one: https://plugable.com/products/usbc-nvme/
09:26<blast007>(though, USB seems to limit the performance, even when I was using USB 3.1 Gen 2, I think... the USB names are confusing now)

09:28<blast007>depends on the adapter
09:28<blast007>some may be for SATA-based M.2 cards
09:28<blast007>this one specifically is for M.2 NVMe PCIe cards
09:28<RaulFR>ok, I see :-)
09:30<blast007>I've got an internal PCIe card at home that has two M.2 slots - one for a PCIe NVMe, which uses the PCIe slot for data, and one for a SATA M.2, for which you plug a SATA cable from the card to your motherboard

20:36<ullbeking>00:47 <ullbeking> does anybody know how i can `chroot /target` plus do the other necessary things (probably like `mount -B /dev`, ...) in a shell in the installer, so that instead of trying to get through a broken install using this awful busybox toolkit, i might be able to create a halfway usable environment?

22:22<ullbeking>i think that would do it
22:22<ullbeking>also in
22:22<ullbeking>also, i'm using ipv6
22:22<Echoz[m]>hmm, never actually used the installer for anything ipv6 before, but I guess it should work
22:23<ullbeking>the reason for wanting the other shell is that getting networking up in busybox was impossible; those utilities are very underpowered
22:23<ullbeking>i'll try again no and see what happens...
22:24<Echoz[m]>I agree with that, but can't you use ip addr, etc.?
22:24<Echoz[m]>and just set the ip address like that
22:25<ullbeking>it doesn't set the routing table in the installer, and i don't know how to set it from the cli

22:29<Echoz[m]>yeah for instance ip route add default via 192.168.0.1
22:30<ullbeking>cool, thx
22:31<ullbeking>but these will be ipv6 addresses
22:31<Echoz[m]>i suppose for ipv6 you can do ip -6 route add default via 2002:1234::1
