00:01<Guest895>sqrt{not}: Well, "System X11 Default" is selected. I will try "GNOME on X11" and see whether it makes a difference.
00:01<Guest895>john: Have you had a read through of `man 5 adjtime`? Does that help?
00:01-!-narispo [~narispo@2a01:e0a:2a2:1590:1478:6a4f:6e17:3ad] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
00:02<Guest895>john: According to that, you cannot put just the string "Local" into it.
00:02<sqrt{not}>Guest895: good luck, that's about all I know about wayland, no direct experience yet

00:03<Guest895>sqrt{not}: Cheers. My other problems may all be related to wayland anyway. A quick search has shown that NVIDIA has poor support for wayland.
00:03<john>I have tried the man pages and even read a bug report that claims to recreate adjtime it has no effect no file is created in /etc

02:25<twb>So um... because I was bad in a past life, I am trying to run an abandoned PHP5 app. That means I need jessie (oldoldstable). I tried setting up a systemd-nspawn container, but systemd v215 (jessie) is not friends with systemd v242 (buster).
02:25<twb>So: is there still a jessie-backports, or should I go straight to snapshot.d.o?

03:31<grummund>Hi, i get this error (3 times) from update-grub, /boot is on RAID1, is it anything to be concerned about? -
03:31<grummund>/usr/sbin/grub-probe: warning: Couldn't find physical volume `(null)'. Some modules may be missing from core image..
03:32<grummund>https://paste.debian.net/1097666/
03:33<twb>grummund: grub tries to auto-detect what drivers it needs, and compile only those into its stage 1.5.
03:33<twb>grummund: that error is it not auto-detecting properly for some reason.
03:34<twb>grummund: I got fed up with grub long ago and switched to refind (on EFI systems) and extliux (on legacy systems), which don't have this step in the first place
03:35<twb>grummund: by RAID1, do you mean md raid (/proc/mdstat), or something else?
03:35<grummund>is there anything to be read into the order of messages? since it goes on to do 4.9.0-8 without complaint.

10:13<bremner>!ask
10:13<dpkg>If you have a question, just ask! For example: "I have a problem with ___; I'm running Debian version ___. When I try to do ___ I get the following output ___. I expected it to do ___." Don't ask if you can ask, if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask. We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. If you don't get an answer try a few hours later or on debian-user@lists.debian.org. See <smart questions><errors>.
10:13<plouj>I can't find any documentation about this, but I found an install_key function in the postinst of http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/pool/main/g/google-chrome-beta/google-chrome-beta_77.0.3865.42-1_amd64.deb and it's not referenced anywhere else so I was wondering if apt/dpkg call it automatically

13:59<Lars_1>hello
13:59<sarnold>hello
13:59<Lars_1>need help regarding installation for proper nvidia driver on debian buster!
14:00<Lars_1>It keeps failing says some x server is on
14:00<Lars_1>then tells me to see the logs
14:05<amacater>If you're able to restart the install - install a minimal system using the expert install. Do a minimal install, unchecking any desktop environment. Make sure you add contrib and non-free. Follow the instructions to install the Nvidia driver. Then, and only then, attempt to install a windowing environment using tasksel.
14:06<Lars_1>I am a noob, a little bit of more details would be extremely helpful
14:06<amacater>There is an option to use Wayland _or_ Xorg on windowing environment login. You will need ot use Xorg
14:06<Lars_1>ok
14:06<amacater>Where are you / what keyboard layout would you normally use / what time zone

14:08<amacater>If, for example, you are in Sweden, se keyboard layout, Stockholm time zone - those are the sorts of questions you'd answer in the install
14:09<amacater>...
14:09<Lars_1>keyboard layout is American
14:09<Lars_1>India
14:09<Lars_1>time zone
14:10<Lars_1>to be honest this is my 7th attempt installing these drivers before it breaks and i have to reinstall the os
14:10<amacater>So: booting from an install image - there is an Advanced options selection. That has expert install as a sub option. Choose the text install Work your way through the install slowly

14:16<amacater>OS
14:18<amacater>If you boot from a Debian Live image, there's an easier installer but you do need to select an option which will install a minimal text only Debian on which you can then build the Nvidia drivers

21:31<sarnold>what's your native language?
21:31<_pa>hi sarnold
21:32<_pa>my native language is language of Debian, Croatian
21:32<sarnold>:D
21:32<_pa>:)
21:33<sarnold>aww :( I don't see a #debian-hr. I'm surprised.
21:33<_pa>lol sarnold
21:33<_pa>there's only one Debian, free for all
21:33<_pa>we wanted to call her Debiana at first :)
21:34<annadane>it's almost worth sending people to language specific mailing lists at this stage with how few people are in those irc channels
21:34<annadane>"join debian-french" <5 people>
21:34<sarnold>annadane: could be :(
21:34<_pa>you know, thinking about Debian now, brings lot's of memories from the past
21:35<_pa>hi annadane
21:35<annadane>hi
21:35<sarnold>irc has shrunk for everyone, but non-english even more..
21:35<_pa>it's that localisation thing...

21:37<_pa>annadane, you have to know history to understand why french people hate English language so much
21:37<annadane>well it's not just french, non english channels in general don't have a lot of people in them
21:37<annadane>whereas mailing lists tend to be more active
21:38<_pa>well, try ubuntu channels
21:38<annadane>it would honestly be helpful if dpkg had "...or send an email to <mailing list>"
