00:48<rob_debian>Hi adrifoxbg, thanks for answering. In fact, I always do this, but I'm trying to convince a person to automate his debian installation
00:49<rob_debian>Please, he has this doubt, and I have it too: is that necessary or useful I create a separate partition for grub and other for uefi ?
00:50<rob_debian>I just suggested to him only create a separate partition for / and other for /home and distribute them in the two ssd available.
00:51<adrifoxbg>rob_debian: there are always many ways. has expert installer, manually tuning the hard disk partitions. A matter of personal choice.
00:51<rob_debian>and not be worried about creating more two partitions: a separate one for grub and other separate for uefi.
00:52<adrifoxbg>if you're on the UEFI system, just create 200 MB EFI filesystem
00:52<rob_debian>so it has to be created manually, if you choose manual partition....
00:53<rob_debian>I thought it was made automatically, even using manual partitioning...
01:01<adrifoxbg>in fact it should be 3, efi, swap, root
01:03<adrifoxbg>you always have that choice, even with automatic installation.
01:04<rob_debian>ok, adrifoxbg, please, is that necessary to create swap in the case of 16 GB RAM ?
01:04<adrifoxbg>example
01:04<adrifoxbg>sda 8:0 0 465.8G 0 disk
01:04<adrifoxbg>├─sda1 8:1 0 512M 0 part /boot/efi
01:04<adrifoxbg>├─sda2 8:2 0 449.3G 0 part /
01:04<adrifoxbg>└─sda3 8:3 0 16G 0 part [SWAP]
01:04-!-adrifoxbg was kicked from #debian by debhelper [flood]
01:04<rob_debian>I always create it, but he thinks it's not necessary swap, since he has 16 GB RAM

05:15<legremz>ok jm_ i might found what's wrong. https://paste.debian.net/1104273/ I'm in a docker image made by the php team. PHP is not installed from apt and imho there is other things thats blocks me from installing php7.3-sybase. I will make my own docker image because in a VM with a fresh Buster ther is no problem.
05:15<legremz>Thanks for your help :)

10:18-!-ccnp [~ccnp@176.47.44.177] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
10:21<blackbit>i think it's challenging without modifying the original program. having a tool through with the output is piped can't work because this only affects one file descriptor, normally stdout. if you do something like 2>&1 you lose the distinction
10:23<Icefoz>blackbit: I think there might be a way to make your shell (bash or whatever) do it for you, but I'm not sure how.
10:23<Icefoz>That'd be the first place I'd look at least.
10:23<blackbit>true. i'll inspect the bash manpage
10:24<blackbit>i guess one could write some kind of wrapper that does nothing else than starting the program that is given as argv[1] and intercepting its output streams and doing the prepending
10:27<Icefoz>Yeah that would definitely work, but I'd hope for something more automatic.
10:28<Icefoz>A quick browse of StackOverflow doesn't turn up anything like that, though there's fairly simple functions you can add to your .bashrc to implement that wrapper: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/6841143/how-to-set-font-color-for-stdout-and-stderr

17:29<Gues_____>It is the DVD1 image

18:01<retrospectacus>All of those are personal preference. I would not use raid or encryption or swap.
18:01<jhutchins>Gues_____: Normal setup should be under 30 minutes. Not sure how much luks & raid add. Encryption used to include writing zeros to every block on the disk, wich for 4-8 TB could take several hours.

18:09<Gues_____>would setting up regular cron jobs for backup to the second disk from the primary disk provide better performance than RAID 1?
18:10<sarnold>I bet that'd be worse
18:10<retrospectacus>no, but it would provide better backups. RAID 1 has no effect on performance
18:11*grummund has raid 1 mirrored across 3 drives, with luks encryption.
18:11<sarnold>at least with zfs mirrors, reads can be satisfied from any of the disks in the mirror, which can have huge read performance benefits, but don't know about the raid setup you're using
18:11<retrospectacus>If you're worried about peformance then you should forget encryption.
18:12<grummund>Gues_____: what performance do you need?
18:12<sarnold>fwiw my root on zfs on luks on nvme is *way* faster than my old ext4 on ssd system. the cpu can't be much faster.. I bet encryotion's not a real huge penalty these days
18:13<sney>I like to put the OS on a fast disk (SSD generally, though I just retired a machine that was using a 15k sas disk) and then deal with raid, backups, optional encryption on a separate array
18:13<Gues_____>performance isn't the #1 priority... but i'll take it where i can get it
18:14<grummund>Gues_____: then i would go with your plan of raid + encryption (if that's what you need).

20:59<logos>@finn0 I found that if you drag the window to the side to the screen, and hold it whichever side that you want to drag it to, it will go to that workspace.
20:59<finn0>In Stretch, FF window has a big strip of which is remove from Buster release.

21:13<finn0>In Stretch, I right click on big strip bar (screenshot of strip bar: https://share.riseup.net/#uIU28mC9RMZilFZNorx1Kg) available on top of application window and select "Move to Workspace Down/Up" according to my needs and also there are some other useful options avialable like "Always on Visible Workspace", "Always on Top" etc which is not available with FF (in Buster) but, avialable with other

22:09<finn0>sarnold: seems like newer version FF uses Wayland instead of X11. Because, I'm getting this title bar in Firefox-esr, Thunderbird, evince, rythmbox (which are from Debian) which probably still uses X11.
22:10<finn0>Is there way to know which application uses Wayland or X11?

22:26<l3lackmane>Hi guys
22:27<l3lackmane>im trying to upgrade parrot OS. im getting this error
22:27<l3lackmane>can someone help please
22:27<l3lackmane>E: The repository 'http://mirrordirector.archive.parrotsec.org/parrot stable Release' does no longer have a Release file.
22:27<sarnold>!parrot
22:27<dpkg>Parrot OS (https://www.parrotsec.org/) is a security and penetration testing distribution. It is based on Debian testing, but it is not Debian and is not supported in #debian. Seek help in #parrotsec on Freenode, the community pages https://docs.parrotsec.org/community, or try the mailing lists at http://lists.parrotsec.org/listinfo. Also ask me about <based on debian>.

22:29<l3lackmane>no one in parrotsec channel :(
22:30<l3lackmane>anywhere else ? im just starting linux
22:30<sney>if you're just starting linux, use a general purpose OS instead of one for security professionals
22:30<sney>stuff like parrot and kali are not meant for learning the system and trying it out
22:30<sarnold>I'm not sure parrot would be agood choice for beginning.. parrot users who wind up in here tend to report the craziest problems, like you just now, that don't usually happen elsewhere
22:31<l3lackmane>naaah ive done RHCSA.. just new to parrot OS
22:31<l3lackmane>hehe
22:31<sney>ok? then you should be able to read some man pages and solve the problem yourself
22:32<l3lackmane>been trying for a while
22:32<sney>if it doesn't say debian, it's not supported here. EOD and there is no clever way around this rule, believe me, we've already heard all of them
22:32<sney>then try freenode ##linux
22:32<l3lackmane>but thanks
