05:23<herring88>can i make an existing install secure bootable by just installing the signed grub/kernel packages?
05:23<DusXMT>herring88: Indeed. Just keep a Live CD at hand, because depending on your firmware, you might accidentally lock yourself out
05:25<DusXMT>(on my desktop, it was as simple as invoking 'grub-install' with --uefi-secure-boot, on my laptop I actually had difficulties because the firmware there ignores/discards any information set by the OS, and thus I needed to create a separate profile for the shim executable in the UEFI configuration menus)

11:03<_DeLa_>Using Debian 10 Buster, I would like to upgrade the "flatpak" package (Buster version: 1.2.4-1). I assume, the safest and thus most advisable way to accomplish this is by creating a backport myself via https://wiki.debian.org/SimpleBackportCreation from e.g. bullseye (testing)?
11:04<bremner>_DeLa_: what version do you need?
11:05<bremner>I ask because 1.2.5 is in proposed-updates

15:12<goleo>Hi.
15:14<goleo>After installing Debian 10 on my laptop (I choose desktop LXQT) I noticed that Xarchiver is preinstalled and it was inconvenient to me in the past, so I opened Synaptic to remove it. But when I click on "xarchiver" and choose "Mark for Removal" or "Mark for Complete Removal" it says it'll install Ark, KDE 5 Frameworks and GNUSTEP.
15:14<goleo>Here is the video proof: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1IoGQP1omE
15:15<dboles>sounds like the system things you need *some* archive installed, and if you uninstall xarchiver wants to replace it
15:15<dboles>you could just dissociate it with file types, or whatever other compensation for being "inconvenient to me", instead of having to remove it
15:15<dboles>in what way is it inconvenient?

15:16<rwp>copyman8u22, If you write to a device (disk, SD card, usb flash, whatever) using the kernel for buffering then the kernel will use I/O buffers.
15:16<goleo>I just don't like its GUI usability, I can do it faster by either manually typing "tar ..." or "7z ..." or by using a better GUI like file-roller
15:16<rwp>Immediately nothing is written. If you immediately overwrite the data with new data then the original write need not ever have been written. Buffering speeds that up.
15:17<rwp>The updated will come by every few seconds and cause the buffer to be written.
15:17<rwp>If you 'sync' so that you can safely eject the device then that will sync all buffers waiting for write.
15:17<rwp>If you 'umount' the device the kernel will wait until all buffers are written.
15:17<rwp>There is basically no performance difference in wall clock time from start to finish in any of these cases.

15:17<goleo>every normal package manager offers a better solution: remove package and all packages which depend on it
15:18<rwp>copyman8u22, On the other hand you can write the data using the low level O_DIRECT option and there is no buffering. The write takes as long as it takes. When it is done it is done. No caching.
15:18<rwp>"dd oflag=direct" is one way to write using O_DIRECT bypassing caching. For just one example.

19:20<philippe>Honnestly, I can't see as quite all of logs given by journal -xe show failed authentification on ssh2 that are not coming from my deskstation.
19:21<philippe>Someone is probably trying some bruteforce.

20:26<philippe>It has worked as-is up to now. nginx is used as reverse-proxy
20:27<elmome>philippe: I do recommend you a reboot. It will be back no worries :). As an alternative you could start stopping services hoping to free up some memory. Then you will be able to start systemd-journald, but anyway I think you need more RAM memory, or less services running there.
20:30<elmome>philippe: Using so much swap will also slow down your system.
20:30<philippe>thank you. I will consider to reboot. cross finger.

21:22<user01>somiaj, possibly the drive requires more voltage or something ill have to check i rebooted since then and i asssume the message isnt there now
21:23<somiaj>Could be, often times hubs take power and don't provide as much power to the drive if it doesn't have its own power source
21:23<somiaj>I have also seen hubs that have an extra power connector to supply their own power for this
21:23<user01>somiaj, the hub has its own power source
21:24<somiaj>but I don't know where else to look if you don't see any errors in the kernel buffer dmesg
21:24<user01>somiaj, [260115.956327] usb 3-1.3: Disable of device-initiated U1 failed.[260115.959829] usb 3-1.3: Disable of device-initiated U2 failed. [260116.037167] usb 3-1.3: reset SuperSpeed Gen 1 USB device number 32 using xhci_hcd
21:25<somiaj>I don't know enough to parse that, could be a bad port on the hub, espically if it works in another plug.
21:25<user01>somiaj, the only messages i see
21:25<user01>somiaj, i tried several ports
21:25<somiaj>any reason you can't just put it into a port that works?
21:25<somiaj>any ports that aren't in the hub?
21:25<somiaj>maybe the actual device is being buggy
21:25<user01>somiaj, that's what i did, plugged it into another
21:26<somiaj>you could try the device in another machine
21:26<somiaj>or google that error, see if anything useful pops up
21:26<user01>somiaj, into its own -- but im just curious why it doesnt work -- maybe ill need to buy a usb volt reader
21:27<somiaj>could be the usb shell is the problem, I have removed drives and put them into new usb shells for that reason before.
21:27<blast007>is it a USB-powered drive, or one with a separate power supply?
21:27<user01>somiaj, it works in a non-hub port but i was hoping just to have it as an external drive location
21:27<user01>blast007, separate power supply
21:27<blast007>then I'd not think that the USB power is the issue
21:28<blast007>I've got a USB SATA enclosure that I think had a wonky power brick. It'll work for a while, and then the drive just drops off the bus and I have to power cycle it.
21:29<user01>blast007, hmmm and it works fine with 2TB drives, my 4TB it does not play well -- im wondering if it pulls more energy than the usb hub provides per port
21:30<blast007>the drive shouldn't be pulling power from the USB port though. you said it has a separate supply.
21:30<user01>4tb is will either work on reboot but then wonk out later, and if i disconnect and reconnect no light on hub

21:32<blast007>so sure, if the drive is USB-powered, that could be the reason
21:32<user01>blast007, yep i misread
21:34<somiaj>you can just buy a new usb encloser with its own power supply, move the drive into that, see if that fixes the issue
21:34<blast007>depends if it's a drive that came already in an enclosure
21:35<blast007>some of them don't have a SATA connector on them at all and instead go straight to a USB connection
