01:08<lids>yeap
01:09<sney>linux newbies using pentesting distros rarely have much patience
01:12<lids>they will need enough! :P
01:13<sney>I think mainly they get discouraged when they don't instantly turn into mr. robot
01:13<MorpheusB>Never heard of it until now. Parrot Secutiry OS based on Debian Testing, which is what I use for long time.
01:13<MorpheusB>True - they think of it as plug and play, and forget that sometimes the os needs some tunng to work on their hardware
01:14<sney>yep, there are a lot of security professionals involved with debian, so usually when there's a professional oriented security distro it has roots here.
01:14<lids>ctrl+alt+F1 then ctrl+alt+F7 will solve the prob :P

01:16<sney>I don't miss those days.
01:16<lids>that's the best part of an installation
01:17<MorpheusB>Me either. Mostly retired now, dabble a bit with some programming, but stay away from hardware

03:07<rob_debian>Hi all, please, I'd like to know if there is a .deb driver for 'HP LaserJet Professional M1212nf MFP' in Debian 'buster'
03:10<tarzeau>rob_debian: network printing or connected by usb?
03:10<tarzeau>rob_debian: https://www.openprinting.org/printer/HP/HP-LaserJet_Pro_M1212nf_MFP

03:12<grawity>given that it's an `apt-get` package name, it comes in .deb format by definition
03:12<jm_>or maybe try driverless printing first https://wiki.debian.org/CUPSDriverlessPrinting
03:13<tarzeau>grawity: i think it's the rpm sickness, where people download random rpm files and rpm -i them

04:19<dpkg>[ppa] Personal Package Archive (see https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas or <launchpad>). PPAs are either: (a) an easy way to grab packages based on nightly-builds/VCS snapshots or (b) an easy way for any idiot to publish a package of extremely poor quality (remember, you will run the maintainer scripts as root during install!). Choose your repos wisely. No equivalent exists for Debian yet. Ask me about <why not use a ppa>.

11:07<rob_debian>Hi all, please if there's anyone here this kind of technical criticism against Debian, I will be very grateful https://paste.debian.net/1107717/ Personally I think so strange this kind of criticism and I suspect this debian user hasn't explored all resources for supporting his 'buster' installation.

11:13<dzragon>I dont want to be marking words, but, in this case i will, but gently. The user that wrote that, has enough issues with understanding the english language, how can you help somebody like that? Unless your willing to struggle for a week, a month, through all the linguistic barriers that this guy has? The one that manages that would be godly in patience.

I _personally_ find it hard to assist someone that by choice or not, havent even learnt the language that built the internet.

11:19<rob_debian>Hi dzragon, thank you very much for attention :) Well I'm forced to agree, and don't consider you are flaming him, for his explanation related to printing issues he's facing using Debian is very confusing. He speaks my language, but even in my language he expresses himself very badly.
11:25<rob_debian>basically, he argues that he could fix any printer issues using deepin instead of debian. But I suspect that he did not read the Debian Documentation enough that the problems he mentioned were successfully resolved.
11:26<rob_debian>Please dzragon, I face difficulty to express my ideas with english too. If my explanation here is confusing in anỹ way, please advice me.
11:27<thsnr>if he does not read documentation/help provided to him (or does not follow it), then there is not much that we can help with

12:40<tlgl>yes I did install the non free and had wireless working. The ethernet is broken so that is why I was worried that I might not have internet access on reboot

12:41<somiaj>this is most likely a know bug, there are various firmware files that could be used for realtek hardware, and though some of the files are 'missing', the hardware still works using the firmawre files that are there
12:41<somiaj>my upgarde had the same problem with a wired realtek device.
12:42<somiaj>i.e. the script notices a firmware was missing, but didn't notice that other firmware works.
12:42<tlgl>ok
12:42<tlgl>well i hope it is should i download it just in case?
12:44<tlgl>should i just do apt-get install realtek-firmware ?

12:46<somiaj>tlgl: How did you get your wifi working in the first place? Did you manually copy the firmware over to /lib/firmware and not actually install the debian package?
12:47<tlgl>i installed the package from a website
12:47<somiaj>anyways, yes provided that is the firmware you need, I would isntall it
12:47<tlgl>well i followed a website
12:47<DusXMT>what sort of website?
12:47<somiaj>what package? What website? Anyways, you may have just manually coppied over the firmware and not actually installed the package, I would isntall the package so apt keepts it up to date
12:47<tlgl>one that had the instructions on how to install realteks firmware
12:47<somiaj>what actual wifi card do you have, use lspci
12:47<tlgl>it was linked in here
12:48<DusXMT>tlgl: mind sharing a link? Just so that we know what the instructions told you to do
12:48<tlgl>oh i don't know it was years ago
12:48<somiaj>It might be you don't have a realtek wireless card, but a realtek wired card that also needs firmware (why your wired card isn't work). Lets double check what actual chipset is on your wifi card.
12:49<somiaj>If you can't find your wirless chipset in lspci, you can paste the output at paste.debian.net
12:49<tlgl>i am about to pastebin it

12:51<somiaj>Yea, your wireless card is not a realtek. That missing firmware is for your wired card. If you want to use the wired card you need firmware-realtek, you need different firmware for the wifi
12:51<tlgl>im pretty sure it is https://wiki.debian.org/wl
12:52<somiaj>tlgl: apt policy broadcom-sta-dkms -- is that package installed and up to date
12:52<somiaj>tlgl: pastebin.com is full of adds, and uses javascript, many prefer simpiler pastbin's like 'paste.debian.net'
12:53<tlgl>ok i'll use paste.debian.net but you can always just install ad block plus
12:53*DusXMT dislikes being a grammar nazi, but ad and add are quite different in meaning, even though they're pronounced the same - wonders of the english language
12:53<tlgl>i just added back ports and it is updating apt-get atm
12:54<somiaj>and if my browser doesn't support javascript? Anyways, I look at them, just pointing out some won't look at pastebin.com links
12:54<tlgl>lol not the nazi
12:55<tlgl>it is also not installed
12:55<somiaj>tlgl: you need to also make sure you have linux-headers-amd64 installed, the instructions on the wiki didn't install the metapackage, so if you don't have the linux-headers for your kernel installed you won't be able to build a new module.
12:55<tlgl>so i am going to follow the wiki i pasted
12:55<tlgl>it was already installed
12:56<somiaj>In step 2) use 'apt install linux-image-amd64 linux-headers-amd64 broadcom-sta-dkms' to ensure you have the metapackages installed (and assuming you use amd64)
12:56<somiaj>you can also skip steps 3 and 4, you can just reboot to get onto the newer kernel. If you install firmware-realtek as part of this, you can also use your wired card if your wireless one has trouble.

15:00<safinaskar>but when i type "apt-get update", i still see that pdiffs are downloaded
15:00<safinaskar>what to do?
15:01<safinaskar>here is "apt-get update" output: http://paste.debian.net/hidden/879eaf94/
15:01<safinaskar>it seems i still need additional setting to disable pdiffs for contents files. how to do this?

16:41<sney>!rc.local
16:41<dpkg>/etc/rc.local may be used to run simple commands at boot time. It exists by default in jessie or older; in stretch you need to create it. Don't forget the <shebang> and be sure to chmod 755 it. rc.local is considered a hack, a stopgap, or a temporary band-aid; see <systemd>

17:12<robsuse>Hi DusXMT, thank you for information; nice to meet you here again ! Please, 'running a command on boot-up' ?
17:13<DusXMT>robsuse: basically, in the past, at least on the BSDs, all services on start-up used to be launched as simple commands on boot-up. That wasn't very flexible, and so more sophisticated methods of specifying start-up services was developed
17:13<DusXMT>robsuse: they're called init scripts, and more recently "systemd unit files"
17:14<DusXMT>robsuse: however, if you just want to run a command on boot-up, you can add it to /etc/rc.local

22:57<amoe>I'm trying to use the blog program 'jekyll', installed from the stable repos. When I run 'jekyll new mysite', I get a prompt (which seems to come from 'bundler'). "Your user account isn't allowed to install to the system RubyGems." Shouldn't packaged programs be installing all of their dependencies with apt? Seems strange that a program from apt tries to install its own dependencies separately.
