02:49<dzragon>amoe: Im not adept with blog programs, but from what you wrote i think that RubyGems are some sort of addon/plugin system for jekyll(?) and that your user cant install a new blog site into that. Correct me if im wrong.
02:50<dzragon>which then, would have nothing to do with apt
02:53<dzragon>Like, in Windows, you install an ftp-server with an .exe file, but then have to upload an .html file into the www or root of that ftp-server. But the .html has nothing to do with .exe or programs at all.

02:54<dzragon>"install to RubyGems" might just be a linux way of saying that you "add something into the blog", i dont know :P Havent checked google.
02:56<dzragon>like, when you install wordpress, to me, you dont actually install wordpress, you install apache2, php, mysql-server and other things, then you just "add" wordpress to the apache2 server and "configure" it
02:56<dzragon>coming from windows and my _personal_ view on it

03:38<grove>dzragon: (warning: I'm not into ruby) RubyGems are more than an addon/plugin system for jekyll, it's ruby's way of distributing modules, like cpan for perl (that's my preferred language) or (as far as I've understood) pip for python
03:39<dzragon>grove: ok
03:40<dzragon>lets hope amoe reads MorpheusB post later
03:40<grove>totally unrelated to what apt does, luckily `gem` can do most of it's thing without root privileges
03:43<dzragon>Yeah, that's what put me off about linux when i started fiddling with it some 20 years ago. That i couldnt get my head around when a guide or a man-page said "install" about something that doesnt use a binary of its own like a program or server. I got confused :P Cause in Windows if you install something it refers to an .exe file or something. So i can relate to how amoe could have been confused :)

03:57<dzragon>yes that too

04:00<MorpheusB>dzragon: I started late 90's with Linux about kernel 0.8 or thereabouts. But I had a good working knowledge of Unix and Xenix which helped a lot.
04:01<DusXMT>A lot of documentation (including mine) uses '$ command-name' to refer to running a command as a regular user, whereas '# command-name' refers to running it as root

04:34<dzragon>id even go so far to say that any statistics is cherry picked, since we are just human and we dont have complete knowledge of what makes something do something in a macro sense, we just pick what we know could be contributing to what we see, but we also miss the hundreds of thousands or million other things that we didnt pick as info to go into the statistics cause we simply didnt know they were there

04:40<dzragon>Like the ones that think "if its not on google it doesnt exist". Lal. Google have like 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000001 % of all knowledge on the planet. There isnt so many harddrives on earth that you could fit it all on, even if you included all harddrives ever made or any storage that will be made in the near future, to hold it all in. Same goes for statistics that show how the weather will be on the planet. A
04:40<dzragon>supercomputer cant figure out _for certain_ what the weather would be on the entire earth, next day even, not even all supercomputers in the world together, would be able to.

So I should be able to use Jekyll after installing it from apt, at least in a minimal way, without having some non-apt program download random non-Debian stuff from the internet.

11:04<jhutchins_wk>derjoschel: Reading through logs is one way to start to understand how the system works. Not everything will be clear to you - but by seeing things in sequence, you'll start to understand "first A, then B".
11:05<jhutchins_wk>derjoschel: The Xorg logs are not great - they're very noisy and it can be hard to spot problems, but blatant errors are all labeled EE.
11:05<jhutchins_wk>derjoschel: The output of dmesg is pretty dense, but it makes more sense, you see what the system is actually doing in order to enable the various components of your environment.
11:06<jhutchins_wk>derjoschel: /var/log/messages is more application start/stop stuff, but you'll sometimes catch errors there.
11:07<jhutchins_wk>derjoschel: Figuring out what's in these logs teaches you what's happening behind that pretty cartoon of a desktop, it's how you learn what's really going on.

16:15<jhutchins_wk>http://tldp.org has some good info on IPTables, NAT, and forwarding. I think http://tldp.org/HOWTO/IP-Masquerade-HOWTO/ covers it.
16:16<rob_debian>Oh, now it's clear ! let me apply this procedure here, according your suggestion and explanation. Thank you very much, jhutchins_wk !:) Oh, I'll check this details on this site you've passed me too :)
16:16<jhutchins_wk>TLDP is a little old and RedHat oriented, but it's still very useful for understanding a process.

16:19<jhutchins_wk>Principles are the same, and the internal operations are usually pretty standard. Debian-specific docs can show you the differences.
16:20<jhutchins_wk>!ip forwarding
16:20<dpkg>To enable IP forwarding (aka packet forwarding) on Debian systems: edit /etc/sysctl.conf, uncomment the relevant packet forwarding lines for IPv4/IPv6, save/quit and execute «sysctl -p».

19:38<dpkg>Current MX Linux is based on Debian stretch. However, MX Linux is not supported in #debian. Seek help at https://mxlinux.org/.
19:39<Guest5247>Ok. What does the stretch mean?
