Firmware is required, ask me about <b43-fwcutter> to provide. http://wiki.debian.org/bcm43xx #bcm-users on irc.freenode.net. For BCM4313/43224/43225 device support, ask me about <brcmsmac>. 12:41<dpkg>Firmware is software to operate electronic devices, usually contained in EPROM or flash memory. 13:12<jhutchins_wk>tlgl: There is a console with at least busybox or maybe a shell that you can switch to, so you could theoreticaly copy and install something from a stick, but it would probably be simpler to complete the basic install without wifi and then copy and install the package.
13:13<tlgl>how could i copy/install that package because i have the 3 dvd complete package set. The only problem is it doesn't unlock my dvd drive to read disc 2 and 3 to add to the sources.list afterwards to add a bunch of other stuff

18:11<nuru>Yes, and none of those match the commit message I'm looking for.
18:12<sqrt{not}>nuru: it looks like the newest debian kernel is 5.3.7-1 in debian unstable (sid).
18:13<tlgl>ok says driver brcmsmac device file is wlp7s0b1 but i installed this and even doing modprobem b43 didn't load the firmware
18:13<tlgl>it still shows the firmware missing and i just ran modprobe b43 no error
18:13<nuru>sqrt{not}: right, so I'm thinking I need to ask specifically to have this backported, but is that even a thing that debian does?
18:16-!-blarneying [~daniel21m@2001:41d0:a:1555::1] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
18:16<tlgl>i have radeon firmware installed also according to synaptics and my x windows is running in softwaqre mode also

18:17<sqrt{not}>nuru: maybe you could ask in #debian-kernel on this irc server
18:18<tlgl>and it is broadcom 4313 according to lspci
18:18<nuru>sqrt{not}: I did not see that channel. Yes, that sounds like a great idea. Thanks.
18:19<sqrt{not}>nuru: you probably need to be patient, but eventually they will notice your question

18:25<sarnold>it depends upon your security goals. a lot of people want to make sure none of their devices are exfiltrating data and thus block all outbound traffic. most people don't go to this level of effort
18:27<nw87>sarnold I see, so does this imply that if you know your system well , then there is no need to block outbound?
18:28<nw87>i mean we are definitely not talking about any propietary systems here

22:12<bsld>it says my cpu is overheating
22:13<sarnold>that's probably unrelated
22:13<sarnold>and ldd looks fine?
22:13<bsld>it does
22:14<sarnold>wierd. hmm. file on all the paths reported by ldd?
22:14<noahm>ld-linux is in the ldd output?
22:15<sarnold>yes
22:15<bsld>they are a lot maybe i would need a regex
22:16<bsld>im searching for ld-linux right now yup there is a match
22:16<sarnold>| awk '$2 ~ /=>/ {print $3;}'

22:33<bsld>that's not correct since some of the libraries are linking in current directory

22:37<bsld>ok i reduced the size of linked libraries - all of them are linked that's not the issue
22:38<noahm>try strace?
22:39<noahm>maybe it'll give you a hint as to what's being accessed that doesn't exist.
22:39-!-ol [~quassel@2406:e003:83a:c001:8e89:a5ff:feca:57fe] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
22:40<sarnold>man, I'm dissapointed in myself. great idea :)
22:40<bsld>ok i'll try
22:42<bsld>it doesn't give much more intel it just shows the execve and ENOENT
22:43<sarnold>but it'll tell you which directories it searched, and for which library it was searching
22:43<sarnold>if you think it should search different directories than it did, that's something :)
22:44<noahm>can you post the output of these commands (file, ldd, and strace) somewhere visible... Something is weird.
22:45<bsld>ahahah im weird - i build it but ok ill post them

22:49<noahm>/usr/lib/libc.so.1 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xf7fce000)
22:49<noahm>??
22:50<sarnold>wow :)
22:51<bsld>what does that mean

22:52<sarnold>it means I'm way out of my experience here, this is unlike any other executable I've seen
22:53<bsld>yeah wine is weird

22:55<noahm>I think part of the issue is that /lib/ld-linux.so.2 isn't the right linker for this binary. maybe?
22:56<noahm>If you run "/lib/ld-linux.so.2 ~/a.out", do you get the same failure as when you run it directly?
22:57<bsld>aah it works now
22:58<bsld>segmentation fault btw i wasn't expecting much more
22:58<bsld>since im trying to link to wine directly
22:58<noahm>it works when you invoke ld-linux explicitly?

22:59<mendel_munkis>I've been reading up on rename and I'm trying to figure out if its a bug that man rename returns the manpage for rename.ul with no indication that the binary isn't named rename.
