06:11<at0m>nyov: one way to double check would be to compare with "dpkg --get-selections". on the other machine one could dpkg --set-selections, but that doesn't make packages reason for installation, like Automatic, Manual and such. like the factoid says, aptitude clone does preserve those.

11:28<zleap>a mirror is a server with all the software on that comes with debian

11:33<blast007>!deb.debian.org
11:33<dpkg>deb.debian.org is a mirror network that is backed by international content delivery networks and for most users, this is the most reliable <mirror> to use in the <sources.list>. From Debian 9 "Stretch" onwards, apt queries SRV records in DNS which then send it off to a CDN. Older apt will get an HTTP redirect from deb.debian.org to the same CDNs. See http://deb.debian.org/ for more details.
11:33<annadane>if you're editing it in /etc/apt/sources.list (as in, you picked one during the installer already and you're now on your debian system, as opposed to picking one in the installer right now) then it doesn't apply to debian security updates, for which you should use security.debian.org
11:33<annadane>!buster sources.list
11:33<dpkg>A suitable /etc/apt/sources.list for "Buster" has the lines: "deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster main" "deb http://deb.debian.org/debian-security buster/updates main", and optionally "deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster-updates main". See <deb-src> <contrib> <non-free> <buster/updates> <buster-updates> and "man sources.list".

13:16<tripkin>Ok. It is a pretty straight forward setup. Did you follow the Debian installation manual that I linked to? Perhaps you missed a step. I think it is a bit unusual to end up at a command prompt after installing unless you did not install a desktop environment. It sounds like you might have done a server install which does not install those environments, and instead leaves you at a command prompt.
13:17<helpMeGuys>well , can i fix from that shell , or shall i do my 5th install on vbox!
13:18<helpMeGuys>debian is very difficult to install , even in guided wizard
13:18<tripkin>You can certainly fix it from the shell using aptitude. If it is not installed, you will need to install that.
13:19<Guest13689>helpMeGuys: debian is easy to install actually , maybe try another distro
13:20<tripkin>so, helpMeGuys, if you type aptitude at the command prompt, what happens.
13:20<helpMeGuys>command not found!
13:20<tripkin>Ok, that is actually expected

15:47<helpMeGuys>i have DVD1 , i was installing from that on the virtualBox, i have made one successful install , every time i install ,it downloads from internet , can i do something , so in my next install it do not download from internet , and whenever , i want i can install updates
15:47<helpMeGuys>not at time of installing os
15:48<blast007>helpMeGuys: what's the problem with it installing updates during the install?
15:48<helpMeGuys>if connection breaks , every process , which took millions of years to install , lost

15:50<blast007>don't set up a mirror during the install process then
15:50<blast007>or don't put connect the VM to the network
15:50<blast007>s/put //
15:51<helpMeGuys>okay skip that step , and once install , then set the mirrors

15:53<blast007>edit your /etc/apt/sources.list file or possibly using the "Software & Updates" application in Gnome (if you're using Gnome)
15:53<blast007>I can't recall if that's the exact name of the application, but it's something like that.
15:54<helpMeGuys>okay , i will google that. i dont want to touch file , i crash files too easily!
15:56<helpMeGuys>is debian compactable with doublw boot?
15:57<blast007>!dual boot
15:57<dpkg>This describes a system that can boot to two different OSs. Debian's installer and grub boot loader are quite good at co-existing with other OSes on the same machine. See https://www.debian.org/releases/buster/amd64/ch03s05.en.html and https://wiki.debian.org/DualBoot/Windows and <dual boot guide> and <supergrub>
15:57<blast007>!sources.list
15:57<dpkg>A suitable /etc/apt/sources.list for "Buster" has the lines: "deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster main" "deb http://deb.debian.org/debian-security buster/updates main", and optionally "deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster-updates main". See <deb-src> <contrib> <non-free> <buster/updates> <buster-updates> and "man sources.list".
15:58<helpMeGuys>and how to check my hardware is compactable with debian
15:58<blast007>you could try a live DVD and see
15:59<blast007>some stuff like wifi may need additional non-free firmware
15:59<helpMeGuys>yeah , and , i mean any hardware list , from which i can be confirmed it will run
15:59<blast007>and nVidia graphics cards may need the proprietary drivers to work well
16:00<blast007>the Debian wiki has info about some common hardware
16:00<blast007>most stuff works pretty well, though if it's really recent it may have more issues

16:03<mendel_munkis>!parrot
16:03<dpkg>Parrot Linux is a distribution based on <testing> for security experts, developers and privacy aware people. It is not Debian and is not supported in #debian. Support can be found in #parrotsec on Freenode or the community pages https://docs.parrotlinux.org/community. Ask me about <based on debian> and <parrot-overnight>. If you are new to linux, try using Debian: http://www.debian.org.
16:03<blast007>helpMeGuys: non-free means it doesn't comply with the Debian Free Software Guidelines. So, either it's proprietary code/firmware, or the licensing is restrictive.
16:04<blast007>helpMeGuys: what hardware do you have that you're worried won't work?

16:07<helpMeGuys>what is the thing we have to worry about when using non-free firmware.
16:08<blast007>you can't easily verify what non-free firmware does since it's just a blob of binary data
16:09<blast007>valkery: you won't get help for Parrot here
16:09<tripkin>valkery: you will need to ask in the parrot linux channel as the above message from dpkg indicates. Try #parrotsec on freenode
16:10<blast007>helpMeGuys: you'd quickly be able to verify that with a live DVD or USB. the live images let you boot into a Debian environment without affecting your currently installed system.

16:12<blast007>the Live DVD creates a small area in RAM to write changes to data, so you can even install software and it'll just install it into RAM, not to disk
16:13<helpMeGuys>yes ofc , but hardware , like wifi , will also not been affected , if not compactable?

16:14<blast007>it's certainly not *impossible* for an operating system to mess up hardware, but it's unlikely.
16:14<blast007>it won't tell you. but you can test if the wifi works or not.

20:24<jimpop>is there a prog/sh that will take a local user and path and report if the user has perms to access that path/file?
20:25<jimpop>e.g. ~$ chasepath.sh logcheck /var/log/apach2/website.tld_error.log
20:26<sarnold>I always use namei -l /var/log/apach2/website.tld_error.log and do the math mentally
20:27<sarnold>but this is an iffy thing: access controls on unix aren't really per-user but per-process; different process hierarchies can lead to different group memberships, different namessystem rooms, different mount namespaces, different mandatory access control domains (apparmor profiles, selinux types, etc)

20:28<sarnold>jimpop: what problem are you trying to solve? asking this question is quite often a sign of an insecure design somewhere

20:34<jimpop>logcheck uses a uid when it collects logs (logtail) and greps them for errors.
20:34<jimpop>that uid needs access to any logfile specified in /etc/logcheck/logcheck.logfiles
20:35<jimpop>logcheck is braindead and won't say which logfile it can't access, but it will barf and give up
