00:01<coache>I use Chromium and FireFox. Should I consider installing Chrome on top of that just to get a flash plugin?
00:01<fdelapena>chromium is dropping Flash too, not your fault, blame outdated websites

00:03<tacocat>if you're using firefox I patched the flashplugin-nonfree installer to work again https://salsa.debian.org/jlu-guest/flashplugin-nonfree (obligatory warning that it's not an official package)
00:03<tacocat>more details about it at https://bugs.debian.org/902634
00:03<judd>Bug https://bugs.debian.org/902634 in sponsorship-requests (closed): «RFS: flashplugin-nonfree/1:3.7+nmu1 [NMU] [RC] -- Adobe Flash Player - browser plugin»; severity: important; opened: 2018-06-28; last modified: 2018-12-15.
00:06<coache>What does the following mean in human language: "Flash will be EOL at the end of 2020, please migrate any use of Flash to HTML5. "
00:06<sney>"convert your videos, you dinosaurs"
00:06<tacocat>Flash is a fast dying technology, websites should move away from it
00:07<coache>Pretty hard to control what they put on their websites from my end...
00:08<coache>Some cool tools for home schooling of young children available and based on Flash...
00:08<tacocat>complain to who makes them ;)
00:08<sney>flash was supposed to be obsolete before those young children were born
00:10<coache>Still producing some pretty interresting results for those who don't need to surf the crest of the wave... Thanks anyway guys!

00:16<apaz>And, I'm not sure what my issue actually is.
00:16<apaz>I have all my firmware, and the kernel knows that it's present

00:27<somiaj>usually it hangs on the thing after what you see. Are you booting into a graphical enviorment, maybe try to boot into a console by chaing your defualt target to multi-user.target
00:27<apaz>How might I do that?
00:28<apaz>And yeah, graphical environment
00:28<apaz>But it hangs on safe mode with nomodeset
00:28<somiaj>I think adding 'systemd.unit=multi-user.target' works at boot, if you are in your system, 'systemctl set-default multi-user.target'
00:29<apaz>In with the kernel options in /etc/default/grub?
00:30<apaz>OH
00:30<apaz>So I just did that, and it worked
00:30-!-mtime0 [~user@2a0c:f040:0:2790::a02d] has quit [Quit: leaving]
00:30<somiaj>well that would be if you are editing the config from boot, if you are booted and chrooted into your system, then systemctl is the way to go.
00:31<apaz>But, is that what happens when you press alt+f2 during boot?
00:31<somiaj>this means you have issues with your gpu. Do you ahve firmware for your gpu installed.
00:31<apaz>I do, yes
00:31<apaz>the firmware-amd-graphics package
00:32<apaz>And I used update-initramfs also
00:32<somiaj>what gpu do you have?

00:34<apaz>It's a ryzen processor with integrated AMD Radeon Vega graphics
00:35<apaz>When I didn't have the firmware, it was warning me of it
00:35<apaz>Then I installed the package and the warnings went away
00:35<somiaj>I think those are a bit new for debian. You can try the kernel and firmware from backports, but even then the firmware in debian is still a bit outdated
00:35<somiaj>,v firmware-amd-graphics
00:35<apaz>Ah
00:35<judd>Package: firmware-amd-graphics on amd64 -- jessie-security/non-free: 20161130-5~deb8u1; stretch/non-free: 20161130-5; stretch-backports/non-free: 20190114-2~bpo9+1; buster/non-free: 20190114-2; buster-backports/non-free: 20190717-2~bpo10+1; bullseye/non-free: 20190717-2; sid/non-free: 20190717-2
00:36<apaz>How might I install the backports version?
00:36<somiaj>even the firmware in sid/backports is from 7/2019, some cards need you to manually download the firmware and copy it it /lib/firmware, if that isn't new enough
00:36<somiaj>!buster-backports
00:36<dpkg>Some packages intended for Bullseye (Debian 11) but recompiled for use with Buster (Debian 10) can be found in the buster-backports repository. See http://backports.debian.org/Instructions/ . Ask me about <bdo>, <backports>.
00:36<apaz>Ah, I see
00:38<apaz>There is no backport
00:39<apaz>But I can try to go find it
00:39<sney>if you search for 'kernel.org firmware' it's the first result

00:39<sney>(debian really needs to update theirs, it's like every day we're helping people with exactly this issue)
00:40<somiaj>yea, I'm surprised it is so outdated.
00:40<somiaj>hopefully what is avaiable in backports is enough to get apaz working
00:42<apaz>Hmm
00:42<apaz>Can I get a link to that?
00:43<somiaj>I would start with by installing the kernel and firmare package from backports, and see if that helps
00:44<apaz>I'm actually on a custom kernel
00:44<apaz>Which is all the way up to date
00:45-!-arnoldoree [~arnoldore@113.210.126.212] has joined #debian
00:45-!-arnoldoree is "Arnold Opio Oree" on #virt #qemu #debian-meeting #debian-tech #debian
00:45<somiaj>could the issue be your custom kernel? But follow sney's advice, and grab the newest version of the amd firmware, remove the firmware-amd-graphics package and manually copy the firmare into into /lib/firmware
00:46<sney>debian separates it into different packages by purpose but kernel.org just distributes a bigass tarball of all of the firmware blobs as 'linux-firmware'
00:47<apaz>It was having the same issue before and after I moved to the other kernel
00:47<apaz>But...
00:47<sney>it's pretty easy to find and as somiaj says you extract it into /lib/firmware. then you update-initramfs and reboot
00:47<apaz>I just added the backports to my sources.list
00:47<apaz>And I got the new firmware package
00:47<apaz>Gonna do that now
00:48<somiaj>if grabing the upstream firmware, should probably just copy the amd firmware over, to keep from conflicting with other firmware package
00:49<apaz>Hopefully I'll be able to boot without nomodeset later too
00:49<apaz>Hmm
00:49<apaz>So, I'm actually having the same error
00:50<apaz>And if I disable nomodeset it hangs *earlier*
00:52<apaz>In the boot sequence, what happens after connecting to wifi?

00:56<somiaj>no, you manually download them from kernel.org just as sney said
00:56<apaz>Just download the tarball and pull it out?
00:56<sney>here it is from my browser history https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git

03:17<guardian>hello, I'm hitting https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=960283 which is a bug on node-dot-prop reportedly fixed on May, 14h
03:17<judd>Bug https://bugs.debian.org/960283 in node-dot-prop (closed): «npm says 'pathArray is not defined' when I try to use it from buster-backports»; severity: grave; opened: 2020-05-11; last modified: 2020-05-19.
03:17<guardian>how long does it usually take to be available in backports after it's been fixed and uploaded?
03:18<Passerby>somiaj: I'll be using it mostly for converting SVG files to PNG, but it's a handy tool, and I expect to use it for other things.
03:18<mendel_munkis>Is there any way to check whats preventing xss-lock from thinking my system is idlee?

03:19<somiaj>guardian: I didn't read the bugreport, I just noticed the package sitting in buster-proposed-updates
03:20<guardian>somiaj: I skimmed through the bug report: the bug has been introduced by a debian patch fixing a CVE
03:20<guardian>somiaj: leaving npm unusable :)
03:21<somiaj>guardian: just check the end of the bug report as to what version fixes it
03:21<guardian>the end of the bug report mentions node-dot-prop_4.1.1-1+deb10u2
03:21<guardian>currently, node-dot-prop_4.1.1-1+deb10u1 is available
03:21<somiaj>4.1.1-1+deb10u2 -- you can grab that from buster-proposed-updates right now, I don't think it will make it into buster until the next point release though

03:25<somiaj>Not sure why they chose to do that, might have to deal with what is required to bring it in through security, but either way it is avaiable. (just like security is a separate repo and only merges with buster on point releases)

03:26<somiaj>this just provides a place to pool non-security fixes until point releases
03:26<guardian>yes, still a bit weird when it's a security patch that breaks stable
03:28<somiaj>guardian: does it only affect people who are using packages from backprots?
03:29<somiaj>because the bug seems to suggest it is an issue with the backports package and not buster itself, (could be part of the reason)

03:32<somiaj>yea, debian isn't often compadable with anything rapidly changing unless you manage all that stuff locally

03:38<somiaj>but yea this is a weird case, the regerssion occurs in backports, which isn't supported by security, but it was a security patch in stable that caused the regression.

09:08-!-Kannis [~kanniss@203.234.86.88.rdns.comcable.net] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
09:08<petn-randall>Kekuser: If only the *partition* table was deleted, you can recover that.
09:09-!-mode/#debian [+l 710] by debhelper
09:09<petn-randall>Kekuser: 'testdisk' is what you want to use for that.
09:10<Kekuser>petn-randall: Thank you, it only ran for about 1-2 secounds, before i took the power from the machine so i don't think it could have deleted much data, but the partition table definately is deleted
09:10<petn-randall>Then again, deleting partition tables doesn't sound like a typical thing to do for a virus.

13:48<apaz>Should I try efi, and see if it works?
13:48<apaz>Also, the dmesg displays no errors
13:48<somiaj>but since you are using nomodeset to even get it to work, it could be some issue with now the efi is trying to pass a display to the os, and I do recall there was some efi-kms driver of some sort, but not finding any info on it.
13:49<apaz>That's a really good observation

22:25<blast007>did you have to install the .deb from Canon in Mint?
22:25<patrick>nope so easy a beginner can do it
22:25<sqrt{not}>patrick, you might try uninstalling that canon .deb, and then see if CUPS can configure the printer without it. CUPS is pretty smart with recent printers, and might not need it.
