00:03<Dude-Meister>squat, I'm not sure what you mean, but here's where I am. A simple tutorial I started looking at says to use lsblk to find the flash drive. I do so, and the flash drive does not show up in the list, though I know it's "there" but just not being seen.

00:04-!-nu-c2 [~nuc@i59F77FAC.versanet.de] has quit [Read error: No route to host]
00:04<Dude-Meister>I can't remember what I was trying a couple days ago, (and just before I had a pretty serious family illness come p) but I DO remember "something" said I could not such and such becase hte drive is a freenas formatted boot device" or something along those lines.

00:06<sqrt{not}>so, what are the sdX where X is a letter things you see in the lsblk ? only sda things ?
00:07<Dude-Meister>Yup. I have three disks in the box at present, two rotational and the 128G Linux boot device.
00:07<Dude-Meister>(SSD*)
00:07<Dude-Meister>Those show up no problem as expected.
00:07<sqrt{not}>what are those called in the lsblk ?

00:09<Dude-Meister>I know. Imagine my shame.
00:09<Dude-Meister>lol
00:09<sqrt{not}>OK good, then try this command as root: cp /path/to/whatever/linux-live-something.iso /dev/sdb

00:13<Dude-Meister>OK, I'm not sure I am 100% clear on how to issue the command
00:14<sqrt{not}>can you get a text shell as root (or user + sudo ) ?
00:14<sqrt{not}>wherever you did the lsblk ?
00:14<Dude-Meister>sda is a 128GB SSD and is the Linus boot, SDb adn SDc are each a 4TB disk full of data. The USB is not showing up at all as a block device.

00:29<Dude-Meister>It seems like my path isn't okay. The iso is in my home directory.
00:29<jm_>cd into the dir where the file is, but first you need to find the right device, unplug usb and as root run: dmesg > /tmp/dmesg1

00:34<jm_>bleh sorry 2nd command is «dmesg >/tmp/dmesg2»

00:44<jm_>if you feel more comfortable doing this in windows use this:
00:44<jm_>!win32diskimager
00:44<dpkg>win32diskimager is much more reliable than <unetbootin> for copying ISO images to USB sticks and you can download it from http://sf.net/projects/win32diskimager/ . Adjust the file mask from *.img to *.* if it doesn't show Debian .iso images. See <usb install> and <install debian> for further details.
00:49<Dude-Meister>Ok. Yeah, the big issue is that there's already a bootable FreeNAS imiage on the stick.

00:50<jm_>doesn't matter, either the cp or w32di will overwrite
00:50<Dude-Meister>I will try in in Windoze just to see if it handles the current partition a bit more easilly.
00:52<Dude-Meister>Well, I issued the commands precisely as you instructed and 'diff > /tmp/dmesg?' returned a result of:
00:52<Dude-Meister>bash: /tmp/dmesg?: ambiguous redirect
00:52<jm_>the command is «diff /tmp/dmesg?» - there is no >
00:53<jm_>that is why you get the error
00:53<Dude-Meister>unplug USB stick - run dmesg > /tmp/dmseg1Ahhhh.
00:53<jm_>yes, first two commands have > - ">" means redirect output to given file
00:53<Dude-Meister>OKay, starting from scratch with USB unplugged
00:55<Dude-Meister>OKay, can you help me get the result to you with pastenbin?
00:56<Dude-Meister>There is a good bit of info about the trouble ther.
00:56<jm_>can you use the mouse to paste?
00:56<Dude-Meister>NO. xterm doesn't seem to liek it.
00:57<jm_>you press and hold the left button, move the mouse to mark the text, then paste it with middle button - does that not work? should be just fine with xterm
00:57<Dude-Meister>Control charactors cause it troubles, and there is no "Right click > copy" type support
00:57<jm_>obviously release left button when done marking the text ;)
00:58<jm_>then simply go to http://paste.debian.net in the browser and press middle button in the paste box

14:31<BobPung>Hi guys, just to update on my situation... great news... I have been able to manage to boot on that 64 bits UEFI machine.
14:31<BobPung>I used a multiarch image, that has been able to boot, and offered the option to install 32 bits version
14:32<BobPung>Now I have a Debian 8 32 bits on a 64 bits UEFI box with no "Legacy" option
14:32<BobPung>Thank you all, your tips gave me the right path...
