00:39<aidalgol>I've just built something and installed it to /usr/local, with it's .so files going in /usr/local/lib and the program in /usr/local/bin. When I run the program, it complains about being unable to find the .so files. If I run it with LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib then it runs just fine.

00:41<aidalgol>/etc/ld.so.conf contains just the line 'include /etc/ld.so.conf.d/*.conf' and one of *those* files, /etc/ld.so.conf.d/libc.conf, contains the line '/usr/local/lib', so I'm not sure why the shared libraries are not being found by default.

00:59<aidalgol>somalia: You may want to change that password.
01:00<aidalgol>And I think you can manually install extra packages in the Debian installer's expert mode, but I have not done it myself, so I'm not sure at which state you do that.
01:03<catman370>huh?
01:04<somalia>aidalgol: wym? and sadly, d-i does not even asks for missing firmware

01:05<aidalgol>Oh, that looked like a username and password.
01:06<aidalgol>No, I don't think it asks, but I am certain it is possible to load additional drivers.
01:08<somalia>aidalgol: does it accepts ".deb" packages, downloaded with "apt-get download"?
01:08<aidalgol>I *think* so?
01:09<aidalgol>I haven't had to do it myself, so I'm not sure.
01:09<somalia>aidalgol: i'll give a try. seems a strange way to do so, considering dependencies.

11:36<rajulocal>skrrt: What kind of machine are you installing Debian on? If it is not ancient you probably want amd64 instead of i386.
11:37<skrrt>thats the problem its a acer e500 laptop from 2015
11:37<bremner>I think ancient is more like 2005
11:37<bremner>skrrt: what processor does it have?
11:38<rajulocal>Per https://www.cnet.com/products/acer-aspire-e500-p4-630-3-ghz-monitor-none-series/, it supports "64-bit computing". So I think you can install amd64 instead of i386.
11:38<skrrt>A6 quad core
11:39<sney>definitely amd64.
11:39<skrrt>alright then i ll try amd64
11:39<sney>for the purpose of 64-bit vs 32-bit pc hardware, the cutoff year is around 2008

14:27<aby>Hi all
14:28<aby>I want to install the nvidia graphics driver, https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers How can I revert everything is was wrong?
14:28<aby>I have really bad experience on this,
14:30<sney>huh? what's the problem?
14:31<aby>another question, Why I need to "I must obtain the proper kernel headers for the drivers to build with" Why is not already installed?
14:31<aby>@sney, I wanted to know how to revert the nvidia installation is something goes wrong
14:32<sney>kernel headers are only used for building out-of-tree kernel modules, they aren't needed at all on most systems.
14:32<aby>and Understand Why I have to install the proper linux header?
14:33<aby>Ok, ....
14:33<sney>if there's a problem with the nvidia driver after installing, remove the package, it'll clean up after itself.
14:33<sney>but usually there are no problems.
14:34<aby>The last time I installed them was 6 years ago, every time i have to reinstall all the system
14:34<aby>*i had to

14:47<sney>!why nvidia installer sucks
14:47<dpkg>nvidia-installer works fine for you today, granted. Let's say tomorrow Xorg is updated -- the nvidia driver will break. If you try to uninstall nvidia (nvidia-installer --uninstall), then you break Xorg badly. nvidia-installer overwrites files at random, and has NO CONCEPT of package management. We recommend against using it based on extensive experience. USE THE DEBIAN PACKAGES. Ask me about <nvidia>.

17:02<jmcnaught>frankenDist: hello, you don't need permission you can just ask a question.
17:06<frankenDist>okie :D so, i have been trying to figure out how to properly configure the ports for an app through my ISP's router integrated firewall, while i was doing a tcpdump to get info about which other ports than the ones i configured on the app was it trying to use i saw a bootpc 0.0.0.0 to broadcast ipv4 (255.255.255.255) with a source mac address that only differs in the last bit of my cablemodem's port mac address that
17:06<frankenDist>figures in the arp table of my OS. I am surprised since, i have only a ethernet interface in my computer and it is configured as inet static in the /etc/network/interfaces.d/interface_file , the router is trying to lease me an ip address on the range of my LAN and this is even more weird, since i've disabled the DHCP server on the router
17:06<frankenDist>is it posible to disable bootpc? how do i do it?
17:07<frankenDist>also, will it involved any negative behavior for my OS ?

17:08<sney>frankenDist: if you "disabled" the router's dhcp server and it's still trying to offer you an ip address, via bootp or whatever, it isn't really disabled. see if there's an 'advanced' mode or something. also, I don't see how this is a debian issue
17:08<frankenDist>when i said router i meant cablemodem, i have only one network device, cablemodem and router are the same device
17:08<frankenDist>i have done it in the advanced mode, yep
17:09<tremon>if you were monitoring the cable modem's outside interface, you saw a dhcp request of a different subscriber
17:09<frankenDist>my bad then, i thought bootpc is part of the main debian distros package
17:09<frankenDist>there are no more devices on the network, also the APs on the cablemodem are disabled too
17:09<tremon>the "bootpc" port is the dhcp client, dhcp re-used the ports of the older bootp protocol

17:14<sney>if you're never going to use dhclient, you can remove it
17:14<sney>on a normal debian system, dhclient is usually called by ifupdown or something like network-manager, it depends on what you're doing
17:14<frankenDist>i have disabled network-manager
17:15<frankenDist>i just use networking
17:16<sney>if you're using /etc/network/interfaces, that's ifupdown, and if anything in there says 'inet dhcp' on it then dhclient will be involved

17:21<frankenDist>will try that, ty Brigo
17:22<skrrt>but what happens with the amd64.iso ?
17:22<skrrt>thx btw
17:23<frankenDist>mmmm i don't know what to think about this system.slice ?
17:23<sney>skrrt: you only need one iso to install debian, there are a bunch of different choices
17:23<sney>skrrt: but the firmware iso is what most systems need to install via wifi
17:24<frankenDist>i also found this file and commented the only two lines that weren't commented yet /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf
17:24<Brigo>frankenDist, usually it means it was launched for systemd itself.
17:24<frankenDist>and restarted networking, but same behavior
17:24<frankenDist>uhmmm i am not really good at systemd, still need to do my homework with it >.< i don't understand it at all
17:25<Brigo>paste it somewhere and let us check it.
17:26<Brigo>frankenDist, most likely systemd launched it just because, even when it goes against it own rules (only launch daemons when needed).
17:26<sney>the 0pointer.net series 'systemd for administrators' is great for understanding more of the how/why of normal systemd operation
17:26<frankenDist>bc1q4x6nwp56s9enmwtsa8um0gywpxdzeyrdluga04

17:29<frankenDist>i am also angry with NetworkManager, since i did a systemctl disable network-manager and nowadays if i do a systemctl status network-manager there is no such unit

18:56<sney>indeed
18:56<sney>in this case, just an answer to "I disabled it but it's not disabled"
18:57<mason>Yeah, that sort of situation is how I found out about the varieties of masking.
18:58<mason>I'd have to dig to remember the details, but the default masking (link to /dev/null) and the other sort (an empty override) behave differently inside containers.
18:59<mason>Hrm, not remembering and I'd have to log into work to see.
19:00<mason>Had the person use the drop-in version anyway, and that managed to suppress the service.
19:00<frankenDist>i wont give more headache, this is now a problem for cinnamon dev group i guess, but althou i have systemctl mask NetworkManager.service NetworkManager-dispatcher.service and NetworkManager-wait-online.service AND even modified the line on /etc/systemd/system/dbus-org.freedesktop.nm-dispatcher from ExecStart=/usr/lib/NetworkManager/nm-dispatcher to ExecStart= it keeps starting at boot and i still have the same behavior
19:01<frankenDist>cinnamon desktop looks cool and makes a lot of work for the user, so i dont need to bother on multiple screens resolution and order (for example) at boot, or weird behavior with the menu bar etc
19:01<frankenDist>but this sucks

19:02<mason>frankenDist: That naming looks wrong. Shouldn't it be a service file?

22:25<ap4lmtree>hi
22:26<ap4lmtree>i was using the sabnzbd from the debian apt repository on bullseye. but it is version 3.0.0 and the sabnzbd development team has a stable 3.2.0
22:27<ap4lmtree>so i am wondering what i shoudl do. i uninstall the apt version. Then, i have option to use snapcraft or docker i think

22:27<ap4lmtree>docker is more for a company or having a template that is put to many computers right
22:27<ap4lmtree>snapcraft is more for individual users i think
22:28<imMute>docker can be used to run apps on a personal system.
22:28<ap4lmtree>snapcraft is easier to manage with systemd i think, no?
22:29<ap4lmtree>because docker doesnt give systemd access to what it is doing?
22:29<imMute>that I have no idea
22:29<ap4lmtree>do you use sabnzbd?
22:30<imMute>I don't use any of them, except docker at work a bit

22:41<blast007>ap4lmtree: the latest stable is 3.1.1, not 3.2.0. That version was recently pushed into the debian source VCS, but the tracker page also says "A Debian contributor is looking for a sponsor to upload a package update." https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/sabnzbdplus
22:41<pumpernickel>ap4lmtree snap is easier to use, docker is more powerful. so it really depends on what you wanna do, idk what sabnzbd is but probably at the beginning easier with snap.
