12:57 | <john009> | I registered a query a few evening back re: no wifi connection while trying to install devuan with the netinstall.iso. Someone suggested using a wired ethernet connection to facilitate the install, and then sort out the wifi afterwards. Good plan (thank you) and it worked, apart from sorting out the wifi now! |
12:57 | <john009> | Connection is random - for only a few minutes at a time (if that) - with frequent disconnects and reconnection (using the connman GUI (CMST)) being much less successful than the initial one (if at all). Error messages are either: |
12:57 | <john009> | 1. (In a CMST Warning box). We received a DBUS reply message indicating an error. |

20:34 | <LuKaRo> | Ah, I was able to boot using an older kernel in the GRUB menu. How can I fix my main kernel? |
20:34 | <johnjay> | i usually boot into the system and do grub-install or maybe update-grub |
20:34 | <johnjay> | i'm not sure the difference exactly |
20:35 | <johnjay> | also i may be wrong, but grub is very confusing in that the actual boot menu for the entire drive is on the partition of your debian system |
20:35 | <LuKaRo> | Thanks! Are you sure that updating grub will fix it? Because Grub itself is working fine, it's that one image that doesn't work... |
20:35 | <johnjay> | meaning, you start up, efi boot manager runs, then it loads the different OS entries from debian partition, and then boots the actual OS. |
20:36 | <johnjay> | well if the kernel is the problem grub wont' fix that. grub just determines which partition to boot from |
20:37 | <johnjay> | all i've ever done with it is to edit in grub the kernel parameters, i think 'e' does that? not sure but it's in the manual. sometimes passing different kernel params is necessary |
20:37 | <LuKaRo> | Yeah, that's what I thought as well. And booting the older kernel version seems to work |
20:38 | <LuKaRo> | So I don't think it's an issue with Grub but rather an issue with the current kernel version? |
20:40 | <johnjay> | i don't know about those packages you said. but are you running a different kernel or a completely different partition? |
20:40 | <johnjay> | like ubuntu on one partition, arch on a second, etc? |
20:41 | <LuKaRo> | this is a MacBook, but Debian got their own /boot partition |
20:42 | <LuKaRo> | I think this has something to do with graphics, because when using the recovery mode boot entry in GRUB, I get "fb: switching to radeondrmfb from EFI VGA" and then it hangs. |
20:42 | <johnjay> | oh ok. if it's just debian then and it has different kernel options in grub then yeah that's a kernel problem |
20:43 | <ax562> | LuKaRo you are all over the place :P |
20:43 | <johnjay> | debian on a macbook sounds complicated |

22:30 | <lerrius> | I'm having a puzzle with pulseaudio on Debian Sid: my machine has two sound cards, one is built-in (HDA Intel MID, Chip: VIA VT1708S) and the other is a PCI card (SB Audigy 2 Platinum [SB0240P], Chip: Sigmatel STAC9721,23). Only the Intel shows up in pavucontrol, whereas when I swap out the Audigy card for an ordinary SB0200 card it shows up OK in the pavucontrol. Is there something missing in the pulseaudio code to not recognize |
22:30 | <lerrius> | the Audigy card? The Audigy card works fine via ALSA, but I'd like to be able to use it via pulseaudio (so that all applications could easily use the Audigy card, instead of having to manually tell them to use ALSA). |
