04:47<mendel_munkis>seeing as the py3 wicd port hasn't seen any activity in nearly a year, what are some good alternative non-DE based network managers?
04:49<Lantizia>TobiX, AHA!! well that would explain it then
04:50<Lantizia>to confirm this then... shouldn't we be able to confirm where in the debian-build of apache is it's "audited" DHE groups of 4096 in size?
04:52<Lantizia>presumably it's this thing called 'ffdhe4096' ... maybe it's predefined in openssl rather than apache?

05:11<root_>hello
05:11<Lantizia>hello
05:12<pumpernickel>xormor how complex would your setup be?
05:14<xormor>pumpernickel: as simple as possible, with the UI I like. I did a "sudo apt remove kde*". I did not trust the KDE Wallet and the other components with it. Also, I like GNOME better than KDE, because I am more used to GNOME and it looks simpler.
05:15<pumpernickel>why would you not trust kwallet?
05:15<xormor>pumpernickel: I do not know.
05:15<pumpernickel>mendel_munkis how complex is your setup?
05:15<pumpernickel>It’s a very good wallet for gpg stuff
05:16<xormor>pumpernickel: it seems strange to me. I did not get to use the "default method" anymore, and had to use the "secondary method". I think it was FISH. I think it is some sort of an encryption scheme.
05:16<pumpernickel>What is default/secondary method you are talking about?
05:16<xormor>pumpernickel: OK. I got confused when it told me to use another scheme. I suspected that GPG did not work with it, that maybe it used something else.
05:17<xormor>pumpernickel: I think it was GPG versus FISH. BlowFish or something.
05:17<Lantizia>"Beginning with version 2.4.7, mod_ssl makes use of standardized DH parameters with prime lengths of 2048, 3072 and 4096 bits and with additional prime lengths of 6144 and 8192 bits beginning with version 2.4.10 (from RFC 3526), and hands them out to clients based on the length of the certificate's RSA/DSA key"
05:17<Lantizia>BAM!
05:17<xormor>I am confused.
05:17<Lantizia>I only had to crawl through the Apache 2 source to find that
05:17<Lantizia>TobiX, RFC3526 and not RFC7919 it seems
05:18<pumpernickel>Blowfish afaik is very old
05:18<pumpernickel>xormor
05:19<pumpernickel>mendel_munkis you could look into iwd + systemd-networkd for your setup
05:22<mendel_munkis>pumpernickel: how complex network wise or system wise?
05:23<mendel_munkis>I thought of systemd-networkd but I am looking for something with a tui/gui
05:24<pumpernickel>That’s why I was asking, as networkd is only Textfiles, other than that I guess network manager is the last option
05:25<pumpernickel>nmtui
05:25<pumpernickel>iwd has also only a cli interface
05:25<pumpernickel>mendel_munkis ^
05:26<xormor>pumpernickel: yes. I do not want to use Blowfish. I want a "normal encryption" that can be decrypted by the "authorities" when needed, but not too easy to decrypt. I do not want my system mangled. I have 2 systems: my local Debian and the remote shell, that is Ubuntu. I want the file transfer and the ssh to be safe. If needed, my encryption can be decrypted but it should not be too easy, not too hard
05:26<xormor>either. I would rather have "the authorities" look at my data than a random hacker or a random group of hackers.

06:01<herbert>I considered, trying to update my BIOS (a little bit fear distroying my PC ...) but not sure that this will solve my problem because of different results in powering off ( 1. short uptime result is correct power-off 1. Longer uptime result is NOT powering off .. !)
06:02<herbert>But I will give this a chance, will try it
06:02<nevyn>so it shuts down and get's to 'powering off system' and hangs there?
06:02<herbert>I hope updating BIOS is not a problem in inusable PC :(
06:03<nevyn>at that point the kernel has called bios functions to turn off the power. (these are often flakey) as linux doesn't do this the same way as windows (tho it tries to be as much like the way windows does it as posssible.)
06:03<herbert>YES, shutdown is correct BUT machine is hanging waiting for powering off (LED is ON ..)
06:04<herbert>and after some time (time to real power-off varies )
06:04<pumpernickel>afaik gigabyte has dual bios on every board they sell, so the chances of killing your board is already pretty low (just make sure you don’t flash both at the same time) plus nowadays it’s less likely to kill a board with an uefi update
06:04<nevyn>oh are you useing uefi? or oldschool bios?
06:05<nevyn>uefi is more reliable I think it's certainly better specified.
06:05<herbert>I hope so, that the new mainboards (and BIOS and UEFI) will minimate risk of destroying my system)
06:05<herbert>This machine i buyed 6 month's ago. Last machine was more than 7 years old :)
06:06<pumpernickel>Pretty sure that you have 2 copies of your uefi. As said, make sure the flash also backup Uefi is _deselected_

10:27<SubOptimal>@luxabh How do you try to connect from Debian to Windows? Does a `ping` to your Windows machine work?
10:27<zykotick9>luxabh: are you using the IP of the machine to try to connect or are you browsing for it?

12:10<Blohsh>the issue i have is my cpu speed is stuck at 1.20ghz while its full power is 2.26ghz, this is issue maybe because of old hardware but i fix this issue by using throttlestop in windows, and can't fix in linux.

14:53<jmcnaught>If the network card is too new for a driver to be in the buster kernel then a firmware will not help. You could try installing from a larger image (with more packages) without network, and using a USB stick from another computer to install kernel and firmware packages from buster-backports.
14:53<keycollector>Ahh, so this may be a kernel issue?

14:54<sney>the "driver" is part of the kernel
14:55<sney>the firmware files are just extra components, usually stuff to do with setting radio frequencies.
14:55<sney>wifi vendors keep that stuff closed source for no good reason. but in any case the kernel module does most of the work, and when you have new hardware, you need the new kernel module.

14:58<sney>OR as jmcnaught suggested, install buster using a CD1 or DVD installer, so you don't need the network during install, and install the bpo kernel afterwards

19:49<the0>Hi, I'm trying to install a VM with a bit of a weird network connectivity, and would appreciate hints on how to make that easier:
19:50<the0>network is bridged; IP address of the VM is in a different subnet than the primary interface of the VM host
19:51<the0>routing works by specifying "route add default via x.y.z.a dev ens3 onlink"
19:51<the0>this is not something that the installer can deal with; it only accepts routers in the same subnet, so I do this from a console

19:52<the0>networking works, however the installer completely ignores it.
19:53<the0>how can I make the installer continue with my manual network connectivity?
19:54<the0>as-is I end up with only a base install, which *can* be sorted out, but this is a bit awkward
19:54<dvs>the0: you can hit F4 and enter that command manually then press F1 to get back to the install.
19:56<the0>yeah, thats what I did more or less (ALT-F2, activate console -> commands -> ALT-F1), but the installer then continues as-if there is no network
19:56<the0>(and network works)
19:58<the0>(and after install I can login over console, then configure network, run tasksel and sort everything out)
19:59<the0>(but I find that somewhat awkward)
19:59<dvs>That's what I was about to say: you can install a base system then configure the network and finish the install.

20:00<the0>yeah, but what action might I take to make the installer accept my network settings and *not* think "network is unconfigured"?
20:01<the0>would that be something like touching a specific file somewhere to mark the step as completed, or does the installer keep that info in memory

20:03<dvs>I guess you could manually configure the network in the install menus, you can do your manual network stuff then.
20:03<dvs>after that step.
20:04<the0>no, install menus does not allow me to enter a router IP outside the local net
20:04<the0>and as soon as I go that route the network interface also gets deconfigured again by the installer
