11:15<calumapplepie[m]>That's my understanding, but the manpage notes that using -m on a shell script will spawn a new cpulimit for every command, so if it isn't a simple script, it'd wind up rapidly spawning and destroying a ton of processes

11:21<EmleyMoor>calumapplepie[m]: It's not a "those two", but a "that one". The rest is mainly conditional stuff... and find is used the rest of the month, but on those nights it doesn't cause any trouble on this machine. Still troublesome on the media box but nice probably works for that case.
11:21<calumapplepie[m]>My understanding of that warning is to protect against, say, a user using cpulimit on a shell script that works via a massive for loop over files

11:24<calumapplepie[m]>EmleyMoor: so, I think the solution is to add cpulimit -m -l 25 tar [options, ect] for that crash-causing tar command. Unless the for loop is doing something CPU-intense, it probably won't cause an overheat if we don't limit it.

15:12<Cleo>the old system was windows 7 home premium but it is unbootable. even with an live cd. only thing that works is knoppix
15:12<Sqrt{not}>Cleo, what are you trying to boot on it that doesn't work?
15:13<Sqrt{not}>ohh, catching up, I see you have knoppix working.
15:14<Cleo>i was trying to acces on my old files on the hdd. i cant boot windows for some reason only knoppix. even reinstalling the whole windows is not working
15:15<Cleo>knoppix and bios is recognizing the hdd so the hdd might not be broken but the bootimage on it
15:15<Sqrt{not}>can you access that hdd from inside knoppix?
15:16<Cleo>yes but the files are no longer there. so i thought of launching an recoveryprogram from knoppix
15:16<Sqrt{not}>these are files on a windows filesystem, that maybe was deleted by your windows reinstall ??
15:16<Cleo>thi knoppix is currently only installed on an usb so i am basicly chatting with you guys from an usb stick
15:17<Cleo>it doesnt even reinstall. i tried to repair it via live cs but for some reason it formated the whole partition on which the files was stored

15:22<jmcnaught>Cleo: there's a tool called gddrescue in Debian that does its best to copy a whole volume even when there are read errors. 16:49<drspastic>hi guys im back after following the steps for nvidia header and driver install but second card is still doing nothing. can someone help me troubleshoot please
16:50<sney>grove: are you using md raid to mirror the disks? grub has to be installed to the actual disks (/dev/sda, /dev/sdb) rather than the array (/dev/mdX).
16:50<grove>(Before installing I looked through the BIOS-thingy on this machine and made sure "secure boot" was off - probably not related, but as it's boot-related and I havn't cared much about the technologies involved in that for ~17 years, it's better to mention it)
16:50<drspastic>both cards sow in nvidia-detect but not in nvidia settings
16:51<sney>drspastic: in 'lspci -k' do both cards list nvidia as the module in use?
16:53<grove>sney: I tried to set up md, and when the installer wanted to install grub I could select between installing it /dev/sda, /dev/sdb (the two disks in the machine) /dev/sdc (the USB I booted the installer from) or a manually entered location (which I saw no point in pursuing), but it fails whether I try on sda or sdb

18:54<drspastic>sney: how do i uninstall packages blind? i wont have a monitor to type on
18:55<sney>the k600 should work with the 340 driver, nvidia.com lists it as supported: https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/156163/en-us
18:56<sney>if X fails to start, you presumably have a text login. 'apt' tools work just the same whether X is running or not.

18:58<drspastic>ahh, so what advantages does the standard driver give? i dont game, i just run apache and use vm for personal work. thats kind of the point of having second card so eventually i can passthrough the k600 to the vm for better video editing, computation and youtube
18:59<sney>nvidia-driver and nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver basically do the same thing, the former is just newer and supports newer gpus. your newest gpu is from 2013, so nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver supports both of them.
19:00<sney>however, by what you're saying, it sounds like you don't need the nvidia proprietary driver on this server at all.
19:00-!-jj5 [~jj5@139-218-130-78.sta.dodo.net.au] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
19:00<sney>debian comes with a free driver for nvidia gpus called nouveau. it's fine for most basic desktop/browsing/video activities.
19:00<drspastic>should i not be getting anything on the second monitor during boot, or text mode then, without drivers for nvs300?
19:01<sney>that's handled by video bios stuff and varies with hardware/motherboards, it's unrelated to drivers
19:01<sney>why did you install nvidia driver packages in the first place? what problem were you trying to solve?
19:02<drspastic>it would be nice to verify the nvs card works at all before jumping off on stuff
19:02<drspastic>i assumed i needed them to use cuda cores. i use davinci resolve, it wont run without gpu
19:03<drspastic>it runs fine after the drivers went on
19:03<sney>ok. so this isn't just a server, it's a desktop that you also use as a vm hypervisor?
19:04<drspastic>yes. old dell r710. i use resolve on the host which i dont like to do. i want the host to only do apache and qemu/kvm
19:05<drspastic>hence trying to get second card to passthrough then do my editing on vm
19:06-!-harmlessgryphon [~default@d60-65-204-179.col.wideopenwest.com] has quit [Quit: stuck in a cobweb.]
19:06<sney>ok. when you do that, you won't be using the nvidia driver on the host OS anyway.
19:06<drspastic>i know. i want the nvs300 on the host, k600 on vm
19:06<sney>but still, at this point, I still think you should remove nvidia-current and see if both GPUs work when there is only 1 nvidia driver installed.
19:07<drspastic>ok
19:07<sney>once again, with feeling: nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver supports BOTH the K600 and the NVS 300.
19:07<sney>so when you remove nvidia-driver and xserver-xorg-video-nvidia, the 418 version driver is not able to conflict with the 340 version driver. and hopefully that will make things clearer.

20:53<kveroneau>Hello everyone. Was trying to create a bridge the other day on my desktop machine, and ran into some issues. I have read the Bridging wiki page, and followed both methods and still had some issues.
20:54<kveroneau>Using either manual brctl or interfaces configuration, my host completely loses network connectivity.
20:54<kveroneau>eg. brctl addbr br0 && brcrl addif br0 enp5s0
20:55<kveroneau>will break my host network connection, and while I don't believe it should, or should it?
20:56<sarnold>kveroneau: it probably should; when you start a bridge any IPs your nics may have had are dropped
20:56<sarnold>kveroneau: you can assign the IP to the bridge
20:57<kveroneau>Ah, but understanding of a bridge should be that each interface added to the bridge should have it's own IP address assigned

21:03<kveroneau>I guess I have taken VirtualBoxes automatic and easy bridges for advantage all these years haha, I am mostly using libvirt these days, and while macvlan works well for the most part, it makes host/guest communication a bit more cumbersome without a proper network bridge.

21:08<kveroneau>I've been going back and forth in an infinite loop with no solution.
