16:33<Sqrt{not}>jhutchins, inplace upgrade combined with no bootable previous kernels, sounds a little risky to me
16:33<ircnixx>basically, i am trying to install the debian netinst on my computer, but i need to install the ath10k firmware. i can use the nonfree , but it is also in linux-firmware which is open source so i'd like to do that. but my problem is, i only have one flash drive, and it asks for me to insert a removable media with it.

16:35<ircnixx>thanks guys
16:35<blast007>tools like unetbootin and rufus aren't recommended as they can mangle the installer
16:35<sney>and if the net installer refuses to cooperate, you can always install with CD1 or DVD1 and configure the network in the installed system afterwards.
16:35<ircnixx>ah, how would you reccomend setting it up on windows?
16:36<sney>!win32diskimager
16:36<dpkg>win32diskimager is much more reliable than <rufus> or <unetbootin> for copying ISO images to USB sticks and you can download it from https://sf.net/projects/win32diskimager/ . Adjust the file mask from *.img to *.* if it doesn't show Debian .iso images. See <usb install> and <install debian> for further details.
16:36<ircnixx>ah, i see. i didn't know the netinst could be complete without internet, what is missed when installing without wifi?

16:56<ircnixx>Mister00X: i worry proprietary software can have backdoors
16:57<Mister00X>ircnixx: I see
16:57<ircnixx>so i want to have as minimal as possible
16:58<ircnixx>pretty stumped . not sure how to proceed...
16:58<Mister00X>ircnixx: there is this virtual Richard M. Stallman program called vrms which will list every non-free and contrib package
16:58<Mister00X>so you could use that to determine all non-free software on the non-free install
16:58<sney>the nonfree installer doesn't have "proprietary software" on it, just some driver blobs that are required for some kernel drivers. again, you can remove firmware-* packages that you don't need after the install is finished.
16:59<sney>e.g. 'apt list --installed firmware-*' and then 'apt remove' anything that doesn't say atheros
16:59<ircnixx>i just worry there will be a lot and i wont be able to tell which is needed which isnt
16:59<ircnixx>ah
16:59<ircnixx>fax
16:59<Mister00X>ircnixx: it will be about 21

17:00<sney>and again not *programs* but some files that sit in /lib/firmware and don't even do anything if the associated drivers are not in use.
17:00<ircnixx>got it. just wondering, win32diskimager uses dd im assuming ? since i dont see any iso contents thru windows

22:35<deb57433>hey everyone. im new to debian/linux. how can i identify the IP address of a device directly connected to my debian 10 computer by ethernet?
22:36<deb57433>i set the connection to link-local in network manager and the ethernet interface is connected, but i don't know what IP the device assigned itself
22:36<sney>arp should do it
22:36<sney>/usr/sbin/arp, as a normal user

22:38-!-mode/#debian [+l 710] by debhelper
22:38<sney>you can also look at mactelnet-client for dealing with any host where you only know the mac address
22:38<deb57433>ok, i just tried running "arp" and it returned info for the wifi interface. so i checked the help and see there's an -i flag to set interface. so i did arp -i <eth interface> and it says "arp: in 1 entries no match found."

22:40<sney>it's possible the other device didn't get an ip address.
22:41<sney>or depending on configuration, it might have a 169.254.0.0/16 apipa address, etc
22:41<sney>if you're dealing with ipv6 I'm not sure what the steps would be though arp should still apply
22:41<deb57433>this has happened before and it did get a 169.256.x.x IP address last time. but i wasn't on debian back then
22:42<deb57433>in fact when i set the interface settings in network manager to link-local, i see my computer got a 169.254.50.x IP address. so i assumed the device would have 169.254.50.x IP, but nothing in that subnet responded to ping
22:42<sney>apipa is dumb because those addresses aren't routable without extra steps. is this device something you control? can you turn dhcp on, and stick dnsmasq on your debian system so it can get an address in the right subnet?

23:34<mendel_munkis>I have a debian machine which had some hard drive issues, apt upgrade fails with a fatal dpkg error. given that I currently have the latest version of dpkg installed how bad of an idea is it to extract dpkg....deb/data.tar.xz over /?
23:36<sney>you're pretty far into the "bad idea" weeds already, but that won't inherently break anything
23:37<mendel_munkis>why am I so far into the weeds?
23:38<mendel_munkis>I mean besides trying to fix a randomlybroken system
23:39<sney>just that, trying to still use an OS on a disk that "had issues" and apparently do normal package operations
23:40<sney>I'd have been recovering to a different disk several steps back.

23:44<mendel_munkis>that was step 1
23:45<mendel_munkis> Ijust know that a few meg wasn't recovered and am not sure where?
23:45<sney>ah, well in that case, you might want to check out debsums
23:45<sney>!debsums
23:45<dpkg>debsums is a utility that will check a package's files against their checksums. The "-a" argument will instruct it to also check configuration files: "apt install debsums; debsums -a -s". Almost all packages come with md5sums included in the package or apt will have generated them for you; generate missing ones with "apt-get install --reinstall `debsums -l`". Ask me about <md5sums>.
23:45<sney>should find your corrupted binaries at least
23:46<mendel_munkis>if I already had it.
23:47<sney>if you're extracting data.tar.xz into your rootfs you can probably finagle it somehow.
23:47<mendel_munkis>replacing everything in /usr doesn't help
23:47<mendel_munkis>too many dependencies.
23:49*sney mumbles something about weeds
