02:32<animal>I have a vps running stretch. systemd is disabled via apt pinning. I removed the pin, did an apt update and apt upgrade and rebooted. all went well. I replaced stretch with buster in /etc/apt/sources.list. did an apt update, apt upgrade and apt full-upgrade. apt list changes informed me of some changes in which dovecot, fail2ban, bind9 and ejabberd were affected. I followed the suggestions. after the full-upgrade eneded i typed reboot and and the
02:32<animal>system said that the operation could not be completed because the system didnt boot with systemd. powered off the vps, restarted and nothing worked. i couldnt even ssh to it
02:35<animal>when i removed the pin and updated all that got installed was libsystemd

09:17<sk84>Can a single SSH connection transfer multiple files?
09:18-!-mode/#debian [+l 739] by debhelper
09:19-!-Mapminik [~Thunderbi@51.158.144.32] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
09:20<petn-randall>sk84: Yes, a single SSH can transfer multiple files. You can easily test that yourself.
09:20<bremner>there is also connection multiplexing / sharing
09:21<sk84>Thanks. If a single file is transfered, from server to client, would client send more packets to server?
09:21<sk84>I'm inspecting a network log.
09:21-!-skynet_ [~skynet@2001:e68:5400:8b81:1f30:405a:7b7f:1678] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
09:21<Habbie>sk84, more data transferred = more packets both ways - this applies to 'big files' and 'multiple files' almost identically
09:21<sk84>Is there any way to differentiate between 2 3MB files and 1 6MB file?
09:21<petn-randall>sk84: Probably not.
09:21<Habbie>'maybe'
09:21<sk84>Thanks
09:21<petn-randall>sk84: What are you trying to do?
09:21<sk84>CTF
09:22<petn-randall>sk84: On Debian?
09:22<Habbie>sk84, the SSHCure research might be interesting
09:23<sk84>Habbie thanks, I'm not actually defending a real system, just trying to read a system log. But thanks a lot.
09:24<Habbie>i understand that :)
09:25<sk84>petn-randall well, I got exactly what I needed, which would imply I asked in the correct forum.
09:25<Habbie>this is not the correct forum
09:26<sk84>Where else should have I asked?
09:26<Habbie>i'm sure there are plenty of channels for security and CTFs
09:28<sk84>I don't know of any. I just needed to know if this is possibly 4 files ( https://paste.debian.net/1182067/ ) since the number of packets to server was larger. Thanks again for help and sorry if I'm not seeking it in the correct venue.

19:04<Vulpovile>anyways, thanks for the help!
19:04<Vulpovile>I wouldn't mind if it'd make a system beep, but the PC speaker is a really weird thing to get error sounds from
19:05<sarnold>< Brigo> Vulpovile, rmmod pcspkr
19:05<Vulpovile>ran that, worked great
19:05<sarnold>ah good ;)
19:05<Vulpovile>thanks!
19:06<sarnold>you can add that to a module loading blacklist
19:06<sarnold>echo 'blacklist pcspkr' > /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-pc-speaker.conf -- or something similar
19:07<Vulpovile>is it possible to make it play system beep instead? or does that depend on the desktop manager I set up
19:08<Vulpovile>desktop environment i'm using atm is MATE
19:08<sarnold>excellent question, no idea :) I honestly can't recall when the last time I heard one of these beeps was, heh
19:09<Vulpovile>I haven't heard one from my main PC other than POST beeps until I first installed Debian

23:04<mirko>i would have expected grub creating menuentries with UUIDs
23:05<mirko>i'm not customizing, i'm trying to figure out how to tell os-prober to autocreate my menuentries with UUIDs

23:11-!-nu-c is "realname" on #debian
23:11<mirko>this whole thing has the very nasty side effect, that /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-top/lvm2 doesn't detect its root volume is on a LV and hence does not activate the volumegroup which results in a non-booting system
23:12<Guest11073>ouch
23:12<Guest11073>can you specify the LV from the grub prompt?
23:12<Guest11073>i.e. when the boot fails and gives you the fallback prompt?
23:13<mirko>boot fails by being dropped into a initramfs due to root volume not being found
23:14<mirko>grub is working fine while booting, but passes the wrong root= value to the kernel so the initramfs doesn't activate the VG
23:14<Guest11073>ah...

23:20<mirko>with root=/dev/dm-X being passed it does not (whereas when root=/dev/mapper/X would be passed, it would)
23:20<Guest11073>ah , that gets called in initramsfs stage?
23:20<mirko>yep
23:21<Guest11073>ah, you're not attaching a dm-crypt mapper to the LV group though?

23:23<Guest11073>sounds like get the /dev/mapper/X param set into the grub config and you might be ok
23:24<mirko>correct, but how to tell os-proper to do so?
23:25<mirko>so, yeah, root=UUID= probably wouldn't work either, as /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-top/lvm2 doesn't handle UUIDs, hence wouldn't activate the VG either
23:26<Guest11073>do you have the device map file?
