04:13<mrroboto>hello fellow debian users, the pulseaudio package under debian bullseye has a bug for my machine and that haven been fixed in upstream. I would let some more time to pass so new version would be included but upon browsing package from tracker I have noticed under execuses it's said that not considered. Does that mean because of the freeze unless there is a bug it wouldnt roll to next version? There is no record of the bug I have mentioned about at trackin

05:11<paffi[m]>yes. the efi partion was not changed but the nvram in the efi bios system. i can explain exactly. but it was very nice from you to help me rebuild the efi partion. so i could outsource the problem better. debian and grub boots fine again and i can change to windows via grub menu entry

05:13<paffi[m]>normally i unplug all drives before reinstalling a windows. bc i now that it happens to write to the debian drive. i just forgot. windows seems to write to the nvram without questioning. creating an entry and disabeling the old order in the nvram efi bios. so the problem was that i had to change the options in the bios

11:48<flyer1985>mmm, in my case /var/run is a directory with severals files inside. and /run is pointing to /var/run
11:48<flyer1985>Is that correct?
11:49<imMute>the symlinks might be "backwards", but I dunno why software would care as long as /run and /var/run are the same directory...
11:49<Fraggle2>imMute: ask poettering, https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/6318
11:50<Fraggle2>there is flyer1985's problem exactly described
11:50<Fraggle2>https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/6318#issuecomment-319074274
11:52<Fraggle2>I also do not understand why this causes problems, but if Lennart Poettering does not know systemd, who else does? :)
11:52<flyer1985>So it's safe to remove the symlink /run, move /var/run to /run and create a symlink /var/run /run?
11:52<flyer1985>While the system is running
11:53<Fraggle2>I would do that from a live cd
11:53<Fraggle2>does not sound safe.
11:54<Fraggle2>you really did not play with those links?
11:54<flyer1985>Fraggle2: Nope
11:55<flyer1985>But I installed the system with a bootstrap and chroot.... It might be the cause?
11:56<Fraggle2>no idea
11:57<Fraggle2>well, I have to leave soon, the path to the solution seems clear now.

Don't ask if you can ask, if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask. We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. 19:10<kveroneau>So, if I add a static route to my laptop(192.168.1.x) to connect to 192.168.100.0 through a Debian buster machine it works fine. However, this means that I need to add a static route to every machine on the 192.168.1.x network which needs to see 192.168.100.x. it seems that isc-dhcpd which I run doesn't fully support static routes sadly, so I can't set static routes using DHCP(or can I).

19:12<kveroneau>My next attempt after reading some articles online about this, was to add the static route to my router/gateway(also running Buster), this allows the gateway to connect to the 192.168.100.x network segment, but my other machines which do not have the static route, but use this router/gateway as the gateway don't route over to it.
19:14<kveroneau>Is there something special I need to do with either iptables or in /proc/sys to allow my gateway to route 192.168.100.x to the router for that network inside my network?

19:23<kveroneau>Perhaps because Linux and Windows clients seem to use different BOOTP option codes... which is both weird and stupid... I am rather new to cross-network routing.
19:25<kveroneau>Hmm, when I do searches online about this, it's always adding the static route into the router, so I think there is a misconfiguration, maybe iptables is blocking it somehow. I'll remain in the chat here and monitor while I try a couple other things on my router.

19:49<sarnold>(that's a huge wild guess, I don't know of any tooling that would do that)
19:51<kveroneau>Oh, and if anyone was curious, I am attempting to route traffic to a libvirt virbr network with my home network so I don't need to put VMs into my 192.168.1.x address space. I used macvlan, but that had some issues, and with the amount of VMs I constantly create, trying to find a free place on my home network becomes a pain. All my machines have a static address assigned via DHCP, as I was creating VMs with macvlan, I then needed to place the MAC
19:51<kveroneau>address into the DHCP server each time... :(
19:51<sarnold>that gets exhausting
19:52<kveroneau>And at the end of the day, it kinda makes sense to place my libvirt VMs into a separate address space to keep my home network a bit more cleaner.

19:54<kveroneau>sarnold, it was getting exhausting. I prefer to have static addresses on my network to have consistency. I normally do connect to each system using it's hostname anyways, but when it comes to managing the firewall rules on my gateway, each machine(especially IoT ones) have a predictable IP address which I can further filter... Can't trust every IoT device for security these days sadly.
19:56<kveroneau>eg. not every machine on my home network can route out to the Internet. My gateway purposely drops all packets going outbound for specific devices on my network.
19:56<kveroneau>Call me overly paranoid or smart haha
19:57<sarnold>that's roughly the thing I want to build :)

19:57<kveroneau>sarnold: I used SaltStack CM to automate most of it.
19:59<kveroneau>SaltStack has my entire network defined, all MACs, hostnames, and IPs for each device. From there, I place each device into a specific role on my network. Then SaltStack generates my dhcpd.conf, bind9 config, and my iptables.up.rules file, and ipsets.
20:00<kveroneau>The same network config can also be used on my home servers to secure their firewalls so only specific devices on my network can access NFS/approx/SMB/iSCSI/etc... So IoT devices which may have been comprised still have additional firewalls to deal with. :)

21:15<sney>that sounds like a matrix problem. irc clients display what network you're on.
21:18<rnm>only ops (irc) == mod (matrix), can change the name on matrix. Ya, it problem on matrix, I wish matrix allow each user rename the room and just for his/her reference only. Just suggesting workaround.
