I have even load the variables before running startx so I have "everything" using the Quadro card but it's not the same than when I run Pop!OS or Ubuntu and their Prime profile selector that allow me to choose "Performance" mode with Only NVIDIA as the primary GPU.
03:44<lhoqvso>I will follow you link and check if that works (very similar to what I already tried)

04:33<FelixActually>So do you have /etc/default/grub as well?
04:33<krptstc>Yes, it's there.
04:37<krptstc>Do you need contents of it too?
04:38<FelixActually>I don't think so
04:38<FelixActually>Well, you might as well
04:38<FelixActually>I'm just trying to figure this out myself
04:38<FelixActually>I was thinking you could try running grub-mkconfig
04:39<FelixActually>I guess it'd be good to see what's in /etc/default/grub before that
04:39<jm_>does the UUID match for your root fs? run «blkid» as root to get it
04:39<jm_>grub uses this one: b01f2075-1b73-45de-bdce-3da95a92382b
04:39<krptstc>My grub file content -> https://paste.debian.net/1191646/
04:40<krptstc>grub-mkconfig printed a lot of lines.
04:40<krptstc>I guess it just wrote the contents of my grub file.
04:41<jm_>the debian way to update grub.cfg is to run update-grub

05:00<jm_>I don't have a uefi system to compare right now

When I log into that profile it goes out of frequency. I've been looking for a while on google and trying to find a utility or where in the users configs would be where I would change this to auto for hz and set it to 1920x1080 if its at 1200

19:33<sarnold>segamain: but that requires the kernel to mount fileysstems for remote networks, etc; gnome folks provide a different set of functions that programs can use for 'generic io' reading, and writing, and so on, and different plugins can then have it do samba support, or nfs, or https, or webdav, etc to get to the actual storage for the 'files'

20:33<p_>hi everyone, trying to remote into debian10/gonme from linux mint. from documentation i've read, it seems like gnome supports remote login. i've tried with vinagre and ssh -X, nothing works. i'd rather not use other programs (like x2go) if debian/gnome is supposed to support this. could any of you point me to documentation or give me hints on how to set it up?

20:37<p_>bremner : I don't get GUI, it behaves like plain ssh. same thing happens with vinagre
20:37<jmcnaught>p_: GNOME on buster only supports screen sharing (VNC) when you log in using Xorg instead of the default Wayland. Check under Settings > Sharing section on the Debian host system
20:37<bremner>ok. So maybe the remote disables X11 forwarding
20:38<p_>either ssh -X or vinagre, I get a plain terminal connection, but i'm trying to get gui
20:38<bremner>ssh -X shouldn't have to involve gnome though
20:38<bremner>p_: have a look at /etc/ssh/sshd_config, look for X11Forwarding
20:39<richard_h>ssh -X won't give you a whole desktop, but should let you start individual X programs

20:51<p_>ricard_h jmcnaught : my goal is to be able to connect to debian10 with a graphic interface, not just terminal. SSH from mint works well. Now I'd like to be able to connect using a gui. from materials i read, i thought i'd do that with ssh -X, but i was not able to get gui (although xclock -or xwatch?- worked); trying to troubleshoot I found "vinagre - a remote desktop viewer for the GNOME Desktop", but i still only get a terminal window
20:52<p_>every search i do says how to install rdp and/or vnc or other applications like x2go
20:53<richard_h>I'm not familiar with vinagre, but it sounds like ssh -X is working correctly - you use it to start individual apps remotely, not to view the whole desktop
20:53<p_>but i read (on https://wiki.debian.org/, i think) that debian implements remote gui access
20:54<bremner>p_: you'll have to refine what you want. I thought x forwarding was not working, but it sounds like it works fine, it just doesn't give you a desktop, like was mentioned.
20:54<p_>thus my question here: without using x2go (or programs like it), can i gui remote (this might be the wrong terminolgy) into debian10?
20:55<p_>richard_h : i'd rather do a gui session (i only tried ssh -X because somewhere I read that was the way to get gui remote access)
20:56<richard_h>vinagre is a viewer for vnc etc. I don't use gnome, so I'm not familiar with how it integrates vnc or whatever
20:57<jmcnaught>GNOME has built-in screen sharing (VNC server) that you can only turn on if you log into "GNOME with Xorg" at the GDM login screen. The default login type uses Wayland, which on buster does not support sharing screens.
20:57<richard_h>but if it's for sharing your existing desktop, I suspect you might need to be logged in to the remote (debian) already
20:58<p_>bremner : you'll have to refine what you want <-- i'm trying to remote gui to debian10/gnome ('remote gui' might not be the correct name -i'm trying to get a remote session on debian, from mint, with gui; i'm only mentioning debian10/gnome in case the debian version and desktop i'm running are of significance)
20:58<richard_h>sounds like jmcnaught has a better idea of how this works than I do, so I'll bail out here :-)

22:59<keats>strange how often i feel like this: https://regmedia.co.uk/2015/01/28/dog_meme_.jpg?x=442&y=293&crop=1
22:59<redbrass>keats: https://askubuntu.com/questions/63594/mount-encrypted-volumes-from-command-line - looks promising, though it is a little dated. A comment from 2018 mentions this approach still worked then though...

23:00<keats>my monkeying around just might work! *fingers crossed*
23:00<redbrass>keats: that feeling means you are doing it right - just enough outside your comfort zone to learn more, but far enough to know you HAVE to learn more.. :)

23:02<infosec>hello, I am getting a warning when I run apt-get upgrade that I don't understand
23:03<keats>redbrass: but it is absolutely overwhelming most of the time. most of the times it is more of "what am i doing with my life" feeling. But thank you very much for the encouragement and the uplifting perspective. I shall try to remember it. (:
23:04<redbrass>infosec - what warning?
23:05<keats>infosec: could you please do copy the error message into http://termbin.com/ and paste the link here? that would help others help you
23:05<redbrass>keats: Keep at it. The skills you are learning will augment ANYTHING you do with computers. You might luck out too and find that these "secondary" skills become what gets you some dream work. Happened to me.. :)
23:06<keats>redbrass: Oh I wish the same happens to me. Thank you very much! (:
23:07<redbrass>(I've been a web application developer for 20ish years. I developed skills getting servers running to support my web dev efforts. My server skills is what got me my current gig, which my dev skills may augment down the road.. I lucked out...)

23:09<redbrass>I'm a little over my head having to figure out how to build a custom debian installation for custom hardware that gets used in some very rough places, but none of it is beyond my knowledge, thanks very much to the type of "monkeying around" your are doing right now..

23:10<redbrass>er. "beyond my knowledge" means I have seen something like it before and know how to lookup what I need... mostly... lol
23:11<redbrass>infosec: Are your running MX Linux? I am and saw this come up yesterday.
23:11<infosec>redbrass, actually qubes with deb-10 templates
23:11<keats>redbrass: Oooh. Personally, I want to ascend to a level where I can port libreboot and the linux libre kernel to support whatever hardware i'm running at the moment. That would be so much fun. I'd turn into a true gnu: fsffrance.org/news/article2002-10-12-01/floating-gnu.jpg
23:11<redbrass>My research suggests it can be safely ignored unless you are doing encryption.
23:12<keats>infosec: ooh sorry i'm not that well-versed on the matter yet....
23:12<redbrass>infosec: this seems to be an old problem recurring, and the warning message is a little misleading.
23:13<redbrass>lemme see if I can find the source for that assessment

23:22<redbrass>infosec: my system (MX Linux) tells me the same thing. I have the same cryptsetup packages installed and encounter the same warning. However I'm not using encryption, so am just ignoring that message for now. I suspect the deb maintainers will sort this out soon enough.

23:31<redbrass>I have no encrypted partitions, and have not configured system level encryption anywhere. I DO use encryption within the apps I write, but that is via bcrypt, or similar libraries - a level or two above the operating system level.
23:31<redbrass>On this particular box.. :)
23:35<infosec>so this is about disk encryption ?
23:36<redbrass>I believe so. More specifically about the software that supports disk encryption. Which a number of Linux systems install by default for more generalized support. That does not mean that you are actually using that software though - just that you *could* if you needed to.
23:36-!-asterismo [~santiago@2800:a4:1012:4d00:b561:12fb:bed1:5d28] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
23:37<redbrass>So, if you are not doing disk encryption, you can most likely ignore that warning.
23:39<redbrass>The "initramfs" gets updated anytime the kernel is updated, or the initial boot filesystem needs to be modified. In this case you have updated linux-image-amd64 - so a kernel update.
23:40<redbrass>The initramfs update is trying to launch the tools needed to update your encryption setup, but you don't appear to have that configured so it is warning you that it is skipping that step. That's all. This is NOT a misconfiguration on your part, I believe.
