01:16 | <anix> | do you have a problem specific to that laptop? |
01:18 | <Guest454> | Trying to install Debian. It uses RST and has TPM. Have not found a way to change AHCI yet. |
01:20 | <anix> | are you installing via debinstaller? debootstrap? |
01:20 | <Guest454> | Install by USB. Debian backported version 11. |
01:21 | <anix> | so debinstaller? |
01:21 | <Guest454> | debinstaller |
01:22 | <anix> | where is it failing? |

01:26 | <anix> | have you set drive access to AHCI in your bios? |
01:28 | <Guest454> | I have not set to AHCI. Google searches suggest that AHCI is not installed and needs to installed via Windows. However, Windows system shos that AHCI is accessable. |
01:29 | <Guest454> | The selection to AHCI option is not available in UEFI. |
01:30 | <anix> | ah, and are you using UEFI or legacy BIOS? |
01:30 | <Guest454> | I am using UEFI - modern PC. |
01:31 | <anix> | why not switch to legacy? |
01:32 | -!- | hele_ [~hele@88-115-23-57.elisa-laajakaista.fi] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds] |
01:32 | <Guest454> | I will look a see if I can switch to legacy. |
01:32 | <anix> | if you use legacy, apparently you can set AHCI in the grub2 configuration |
01:33 | <anix> | which happens after the BIOS and before the kernel gets loaded |
01:34 | <Guest454> | Does not seem to be an option to switch to legacy BIOS. |

01:35 | <anix> | you went through all the options in your bios? |
01:36 | <Guest454> | Very few options in the modern BIOS. |
01:40 | <anix> | are you in BIOS now? can you go to "system configuration" menu? |
01:41 | <Guest454> | Configuration menu shows: |
01:41 | <anix> | do you see option "legacy support"? |
01:42 | <Guest454> | No legacy support option |
01:42 | <anix> | not cool HP... |
01:43 | <Guest454> | Very Windows centric. |
01:46 | <Guest454> | Thanks for your help. I will keep searching for an answer to this. I may need to install AHCI in Windows. |
01:49 | <anix> | you could try disabling secure boot? and see if the legacy support option appears? |
01:50 | <anix> | I think AHCI is at the microcontroller level, not OS |

To list available window managers in your system, run «apt-cache showpkg x-window-manager». Not to be confused with a desktop environment such as <GNOME> or <KDE>. To set your system-wide default window manager, use «update-alternatives --config x-window-manager». For a guide to available window managers, see http://xwinman.org/ |
11:53 | <mdja123cs> | the link gives me an error on firefox |
11:53 | <mdja123cs> | I guess because it's http? |
11:54 | <Sqrt{not}> | dunno, works for me in linux firefox |
11:54 | <richard_h> | hmm. I'm doing a stretch->buster upgrade. Starting with apt-get upgrade. One notable package (the purpose of the system, redmine) is not listed as held back, but also not listed as to be upgraded. Is that normal? |
11:54 | <richard_h> | the buster version is definitely newer than the stretch version. |
11:55 | <Sqrt{not}> | dpkg, stretch->buster |
11:55 | <dpkg> | Read (at least) the upgrading chapter of the <release notes> http://deb.li/JFKc . TL;DR: In /etc/apt/sources.list, change "stretch" to "buster", remove lines like stretch-backports, debian-multimedia <dmo>, and other 3rd party repos as they are known to cause issues then do: apt update && apt upgrade && apt full-upgrade |
11:55 | <richard_h> | I've never really looked carefully at those lists before, but as I say redmine is significant in this case |
11:56 | <Sqrt{not}> | richard_h, you might not see the major version until you do the full-upgrade |
11:56 | <richard_h> | I'm curious as to why not |
11:57 | <Sqrt{not}> | I'm not expert about it either. here is more dpkg wisdom: |
11:58 | <Sqrt{not}> | !full-upgrade |
11:58 | <dpkg> | full-upgrade is the new name for "dist-upgrade" in aptitude from Lenny onwards. Remember that "dist-upgrade" is not about moving from one release to another but installing new packages (ask me about <dist-upgrade>); read man apt-get carefully. Some security fixes will require a "full-upgrade" not just a "safe-upgrade" to apply. Ask me about <why not dist upgrade> <dist-upgrade> <safe-upgrade> <apt-listchanges> |
11:58 | <richard_h> | I'm following the release notes, btw - it actually says "apt-get upgrade", not "apt upgrade" for the middle step :-) |
11:58 | <Sqrt{not}> | heh, that dpkg factoid throws in "aptitude" just to muddy your waters futher |
11:58 | <richard_h> | Anyway - I'll go ahead and see what happens :-) |
11:59 | <richard_h> | I use aptitude normally; just not when following the release notes :-) |

20:56 | <joeDoh> | Sqrt{not}: I have no real way of knowing. The headphones are less than 2 months old, so their battery should be good, and it is charged nearly full at the moment. The kbd is older than the headset but still too new to be a problem I think. And I recently changed the battery in the mouse (which is supposed to be able to last a year on a battery) |

21:27 | <joeDoh> | Sqrt{not}: yes, that sounds like a good strategy. I'm wondering though, if it might even be the radio in the computer that is failing. Logging out and back in didn't fix it. Rebooting didn't fix this time, like it did this morning. I shutdown, and walked to the kitchen for a couple minutes before starting the computer. BT is back now, but because it didn't work on firest try, I wonder if |
21:27 | <joeDoh> | its that radio. it's an x240, so a bit oldish |
21:31 | <joeDoh> | any hardware fangirls or fanboys that know if BT is something that might fail after a few years like usb frequently does? |
