03:24<OFTCircname>More detailed: boot with dm crypt trough kernel. Anyone knows the message which shows which drive got decrypted. The kernel seem to change sata port numbers sometimes. I red this could caused trough speed issues while HD read. Couldn't find the reference at the moment.

03:28<grove>OFTCircname: What do you mean by "sata port numbers"? The device names given to SATA devices depend on the order they are discovered by the kernel, so if you don't touch the hardware or the kernel, the names shuld stay the same.

07:53<r4fkramer>Ok, understood. Do you have any hypothesis why it's happening like that ?
07:53<bcachefs-newbie>r4fkramer: also 'grep' through the logs for "log/apache2" to see if there is some related message.
07:54<bcachefs-newbie>r4fkramer: the log directoy disappearance most likely issue is filesystem corruption.
07:54<richard_h>grawity: works perfectly, thanks :-)
07:54<richard_h>(I should have guessed it was pinning, but it's a long time since I experimented with that)
07:55<r4fkramer>you mean: my fs I use here with Debian ? I use 'btrfs'.
07:56<bcachefs-newbie>r4fkramer: I would run a 'btrfs scrub' and then run a 'btrfs fsck'
07:57<r4fkramer>I will do this, Thanks for the technical tips. Apparently, the problem seems to be worse than I imagined ...
07:58<bcachefs-newbie>r4fkramer: there is the remote chance that some script deletes periodically the log directory, so 'iwatch' and 'inotifwatch' can tell you
07:58<r4fkramer>Unpacking 'iwatch' here. I will proceed with tests, according your suggestions.
07:59<r4fkramer>Please, bcachefs-newbie, could you tell me if 'iwatch' or 'inotifwatch' is more relevant for this analysis ?

08:17<richard_h>have you installed iwatch?
08:17<r4fkramer>yes
08:18<r4fkramer>I opened /etc/iwatch/iwatch.xml
08:19<richard_h>right, so in the <watchlist> section, there are several <path> entries
08:20<richard_h>add a new one, similar to the /etc one (with type=single), and the path /var/log
08:20<richard_h>save that, and 'systemctl reload iwatch.service'
08:21<richard_h>and as long as email to root@localhost gets to you, you should be notified when anything changes in /var/log
08:21<bremner>won't that be pretty often?
08:22<richard_h>or you could probably put '/var/log/apache2' instead, which is probably better :-)
08:22<richard_h>but actually, then you'll get notified every time apache writes a log ...

12:35<redbrass>Anyone familiar with the sgdisk command? I'm trying to partition an image file. If I run "fallocate -vl 1G myfile.img" to create the file. Then "losetup /dev/loop0 myfile.img" to connect to it. (/dev/loop0 is next available via losetup -f). Then "sgdisk -n 1:0:+100M -t EF00". But then running "sgdisk -p myfile.img", I do not see anything new.
12:36<redbrass>(I may have missed a step or two - I do a --zap-all on the image first...)
12:36<redbrass>I've tried to run kpartx -a on the loop device, and then print the partition table with sgdisk -p again, and still see nothing.
12:37<grawity>kpartx doesn't alter partition tables, after all
12:38<dwfreed>you could just use fdisk's interactive mode
12:38-!-jj5 [~jj5@139-218-130-78.sta.dodo.net.au] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
12:38<redbrass>kpartx -a -- add partion mappings. There is nothing in /dev/mapper afterwards.
12:39<redbrass>dwfreed: I'm scripting this. so near as I can tell sgdisk is the best choice for that.
12:40<redbrass>grawity: ahh.. I see how you arrived at that statement. You are correct of course. the partition table would not reflect the results of kpartx.
12:40<dwfreed>/dev/mapper is for device-mapper, not partitions
12:41<dwfreed>device-mapper is its own special thing
12:41<redbrass>kpartx should read the partition table and create the corresponding mappings. But there is no partition table being created so there is nothing to map.
12:41<grawity>dwfreed: nah, it is used by kpartx to set up linear mappings according to partition table -- from before Linux gained `losetup --partscan`
12:41<grawity>hmm where's my sgdisk
12:41<redbrass>the bug is that there SHOULD be a partition table being created...
12:42<grawity>are you running sgdisk on the image or on the loop device?
12:43<redbrass>crap. I think I see it... my command is "sgdisk -n 1:0:+100m -t EF00", but no device/file specified.. oops.
12:45<redbrass>yep. Much better error output now. (something about can't change partition 1's type...) Figures I'm trying to create an EFI based image.
12:46<redbrass>Thanks for the support.

13:40<wheeler>What's the function that caused them to sleep?
13:41<jhutchins>wheeler: Power management.
13:41<wheeler>To keep them running, should I mask the sleep and hibernate targets, or is there a better way?

13:41<jhutchins>wheeler: There's no real distinction between "server" and "workstation", it's how you configure the installation.
13:42<grawity>if you run GNOME, open gnome-control-center and disable the "Sleep after X minutes" thing
13:42<grawity>if you run KDE, do the same in KDE settings
13:42<wheeler>grawity: One was installed with the GNOME live cd and the other was installed with the "standard" live cd.
13:43<wheeler>jhutchins: I meant to say "gnome" and "standard" live cd images instead of workstation and server.
13:44<grawity>the difference is only in what software they ended up running

13:44<grawity>I think both sources can end up installing GNOME or not installing GNOME
13:45<jhutchins>wheeler: Power management is usually done in the GUI, which I wouldn't install/enable on a server.
13:45<wheeler>So, for a stock install from the live cd, which power management functions should I be looking at?
13:45<grawity>I remember the installer having enough checkboxes for selecting components that I don't think there is such a thing as "a stock install"
13:45<wheeler>jhutchins: totally agree -- gotta have uptime without worrying about the server going to sleep on me :D
13:46<jhutchins>"Wake on lan" should be easier to configure than it is, it would be useful in remote-access situations.
13:46<grawity>again, if you selected to install GNOME during the process, then disable the power management features that are part of GNOME...

13:48<jhutchins>I've only seen sleep functions enabled on laptop installs. Perhaps it is a BIOS/UEFI thing.
13:48<wheeler>grawity: I'm not sure there was package selection in the installer (at least I don't remember there being one in the live cd). I recall there being one in the netinstall version.
13:49<grawity>hmm, alright

17:47<enyc>hrrm still trying to figure out this inconsistency from debian to current released packages for buster-backports !
17:47<enyc>https://packages.debian.org/buster-backports/linux-headers-amd64 shows ver 5.10.19-1~bpo10+1
17:48<enyc>whereas, http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/dists/buster-backports/main/binary-amd64/Packages.xz only seems to have "Package: linux-headers-amd64" "Version: 5.10.13-1~bpo10+1" and some on another mirror a least
17:48<enyc>Is there something affected by aspects of freeze that isn't updating all the way through, or something else going on ?? definitely finding some systems with -t buster-backports linux-image-amd64 linux-headers-amd64 are only automatically getting the .bpo.3. kernel, still!

18:48<anon1337>how to use them*
18:48<sarnold>they were made for off-line installation when you're not connected tothe internet and can'tjust apt install whatever it is you need
18:52<anon1337>so, by the plan, when i boot from drive with 1st image, i should to insert another drive with images and there is an option to install packages from another partition instead of netinst?

23:21<r4fkramer> start [-BdqrRf] [-c <ioprio_class> -n <ioprio_classdata>] <path> | <device>
23:22<r4fkramer>Is there any tutorial available for beginners ?

23:33<r4fkramer>so, the sintax is 'man btrfs-restore 8 ?
23:34<r4fkramer>Ok, it's here. Now, let me check it. Thank you very much for information and Support :)

23:38<FelixActually>The manpage for btrfs-scrub says "cannot substitute full btrfs check run"
23:40<r4fkramer>I see. Well, there are tons of command and options. I really don't know how to proceed here. Unless I will have read the whole man page....
23:42<r4fkramer>DANGEROUS OPTIONS show me an option that should be used. But, not sure about it, yet....

23:46<FelixActually>Also, before you do this, you should make backups
23:46<FelixActually>If you haven't already
23:47<r4fkramer>yes, and it's included in the DANGEROUS OPTIONS. Surely I shall face new issues after that....
23:48<FelixActually>Do you have backups?
23:48<r4fkramer>No backups here, no storage in cloud and no additional device available for now :(
23:49<r4fkramer>In this situation, what do you recommend for this case ? Is there another option that I can use it now ?
23:49<FelixActually>Don't use other people's computers for backups (which is what "cloud" means in this case)
23:49<r4fkramer>Fine, I will not do it
23:50<FelixActually>Find a good external hard drive for your needs with enough space and buy two of them
23:50<FelixActually>You can either do a RAID configuration or just manually back up your data to both of them
23:51<FelixActually>If one fails at least you still have the other
23:51<r4fkramer>yes, I will probably have to buy others. Not possible for now. Please, should be ext4 or xfs more secure options on next debian installations ?
23:52<FelixActually>What do you mean by more secure?
23:54<r4fkramer>A file system that does not present probable risks that btrfs presents.
23:54<r4fkramer>There are many who speak of btrfs as being a still unstable fan; I am not saying this; I have been using btrfs for years; but, I never had this kind of problem (degraded file system)
23:55<FelixActually>If you just want stability, ext4 is the best choice
23:55<FelixActually>In my opinion
23:55<r4fkramer>Or, do you consider this suspicious something that doesn't make sense ?
23:55<FelixActually>I've never used btrfs before
23:55<FelixActually>So I don't know
23:55<r4fkramer>Fine, let me ask you: which file system do you use ?
23:56<r4fkramer>ext4 also ?
23:56<FelixActually>I use ext4
23:56<r4fkramer>And haven't you never experienced such situation I'm facing here ?
23:56<FelixActually>I haven't been using GNU/Linux for a very long time
23:57<FelixActually>Only since 2018
23:57<FelixActually>But I've never had problems with ext4 myself

23:58<FelixActually>It could be
23:58<FelixActually>All I know is I haven't had issues yet
23:58<r4fkramer>But, unfortunately I can't replace btrfs in this debian installation :(
23:59<FelixActually>Then you'll need to get external hard drives for backup and reinstall
