00:13<charlemon>I am trying to login on boot. When I boot I enter my cryptdisk password and am greeted by a blinking cursor. I can switch to tty2 and so one. I switched to tty2 and installed all non free firmware and graphics drivers. I also tried nomodeset in kernel options. Nothing works. Does anyone have a clue as to what has happened?
00:13<charlemon>This is on a fresh install
00:16<Konomi>checked the journal or can't access it?
00:17<charlemon>no I have not checked. Can access, checking now.

00:33<charlemon>Yes so GDM is not starting
00:33<charlemon>It seems I have an issue with amd drivers as well.
00:34<Konomi>try when you start grub or whatever boot loader I only know grub
00:34<Konomi>press e for edit
00:34<charlemon>I have a ryzen 4900hs (renoir iGPU, AMDGPU drivers) and a nvidia 2600 mobile gpu. So Dual graphics.
00:34<Konomi>and add amdgpu.dc=0 to your kernel line
00:34<Konomi>see if that helps
00:34<charlemon>ok
00:35<Konomi>if you do it the way I said note it's temporary and you'll have to edit /etc/default/grub and update the booloader
00:35<charlemon>ok
00:36<charlemon>it does not help
00:36<charlemon>same behvior

00:38<charlemon>as I said: I have a ryzen 4900hs (renoir iGPU, AMDGPU drivers) and a nvidia 2600 mobile gpu. So Dual graphics.
00:38<Konomi>wow that's horrifying xD
00:38<charlemon>I have both and amd igpu (part of the cpu) and a nvidia gpu
00:38<charlemon>Yes, and it is in a laptop
00:39<charlemon>with a wifi card that needs non-free firmware and no ethernet port
00:39<charlemon>TBH even installing gentoo or KISS linux I never ran into these types of issues.
00:40<sney>buster is too old for all of that, probably
00:40<Konomi>that's okay I recently tried to switch to arch and the default kernel config they ship locks up my entire system
00:41<Konomi>I ended up building their kernel with debians config and that fixed it
00:41<Konomi>linux is fun right?
00:41<charlemon>buster is too old. I installed bullseye.
00:41<charlemon>Still does not work
00:42<charlemon>I probably need a newer kernel

00:43<Konomi>yours is booting 4.19
00:44<charlemon>I see 5.10 in /boot
00:44<charlemon>smh let check my grub config

00:45<Sqrt{not}>charlemon, running it as root?
00:45<charlemon>yes, that was the issue
00:45<charlemon>wait yes I was
00:46<Sqrt{not}>how did you become root?
00:46<charlemon>su
00:46<Sqrt{not}>!buster su
00:46<dpkg>In buster, su no longer overrides PATH by default, requiring that you use "su -" or "su -l" for login shells (which is not really a new thing at all...). See https://wiki.debian.org/NewInBuster#Changes for details.

09:37<wyre>Mister00X, the Debian one
09:38<vv221>wyre, there are a lot of Debian-related mailing lists ;)
09:38<grove>It depends on the user answering, if they only send their answer to the list, you need to be subscribed to get it, if they also send the answer to the orginal sender (the mailing list software can theoretically remove that info) you will get it without be subscribed
09:38<vv221>For most of them (all of them?) you can send a question without subscribing.
09:39<vv221>But you might not be added in copy of answers by all participants.
09:39<vv221>So you will not get all of the answers.
09:40<vv221>I for one assume that people are subscribed to the list they post to, so tend not to add them in copy to avoid them receiving duplicate e-mails.
09:40<vv221>(unless they explicitely ask to be added in copy, but I would be likely to forget at some point in the discussion)
09:41<grove>I guess that's the most common approach

14:00<samjax>Hi all
14:00<samjax>So I have tried installing Debian Bullseye with Full Disk Encryption (including /boot) with grub's cryptodisk feature. it works with MBR + BIOS based systems. But it seems grub-efi does not work with it
14:00<samjax>Any solutions?

14:06<samjax>and second partition is 8309 (linux luks)
14:06<samjax>The setup works fine with MBR+BIOS. with UEFI it goes into a bootlooop
14:07<samjax>The same setup works with other distros with UEFI, like Gentoo / Arch etc
14:07<Konomi>nasty, no clue from me I'm sticking with UEFI CSM
14:09<Konomi>hopefully someone else here will know

16:13<redbrass>I know the topic is dead, but.. if he wants an SD card based image that will boot in most settings, he is probably looking at a custom image with a custom initramfs. The custom initramfs means he needs to roll that manually. Kernel updates come later - so the initramfs would need to reflect the new kernel - but there are also post scripts for kernel package updates that will interfer I think.
16:15<redbrass>So it comes down to how are kernels being updated - before or after booting from the SD? If before, just reflect that in your custom initramfs. If after, then how the kernel is updated matters.

16:22<sney>ckosloff: depends on what you need, bullseye still doesn't have regular security support
16:23<sney>re pdf editing: pdf is a compiled format, so editing it is difficult on any platform. however, i find libreoffice draw usually imports/exports them without too much mangling, particularly if I'm just editing text and not drastically changing layout or anything

21:47<Sqrt{not}>urk, when you are ssh-ed into the remote computer, you should have a regular command line login, unless your instructions include some weird GUI voodoo.
