00:14 | <un214> | where's the instructions on how to backport packages from sid? |
00:15 | <sney> | !ssb |
00:15 | <dpkg> | First, check for a backport on <debian-backports>. If unavailable: 1) Add a deb-src line for sid (not a deb line!); ask me about <deb-src sid> 2) enable debian-backports (see <bdo>) 3) apt update; apt install build-essential; apt build-dep packagename 4) apt -b source packagename 5) dpkg -i packagename-ver.deb To change compilation options, see <package recompile>; for versions newer than sid see <uupdate>. |
00:17 | <un214> | huh? apt-get source as root failed with a permission denied error |
00:17 | <un214> | correction: it's a warning telling me it had to not sandbox the download |
00:18 | <sney> | apt source doesn't need to be root, it's a download to a local directory |

01:03 | <jcbjoe2021> | if my host machine has 16gb ram and i set my virtualbox to 256MB is that a problem. for some reason when i type in debian gnome on the terminal it stutters |
01:03 | <raven523> | 256MB is small for a modern installtion |

01:05 | <jcbjoe2021> | all at 256MB ram |
01:05 | <sney> | you never answered whether it was xorg or wayland |
01:05 | <awal1> | 256mb for gnome? lol you at least need 2gb or more |
01:06 | <jcbjoe2021> | oh sney im on a mac with a new irc client i've never used. it dosen't save the history. probably does but i haven't configured it yet |
01:06 | <jcbjoe2021> | let me look |
01:06 | <sney> | I take it you are saying 256MB video memory, which is fine, system memory should be minimum 2GB for a desktop though |
01:06 | <jcbjoe2021> | my swap is 1gig it was setup like that when i installed debian |

01:08 | <sney> | yes, if you actually have 256MB of *system* memory that is way too small, and using swap will make it slow |
01:08 | <awal1> | as sney says you may meant video memory |
01:09 | <awal1> | he said swap 1gb, so i guess he is confused |

01:09 | <jcbjoe2021> | my video memory is 256mb and my swap is 1gig don't know if this has to do with anything |
01:10 | <jcbjoe2021> | i thought swap was suppose to be 4 gigs |
01:10 | <awal1> | if you open a term an run this: free -m , things will be clearer |
01:11 | <sney> | you don't really need swap at all for a VM, as long as your system memory is reasonable |
01:12 | <jcbjoe2021> | if memory serves this was easier on real hardware |
01:12 | <awal1> | jcbjoe2021, if you can open a terminal, what says: free -h |
01:12 | <sney> | gnome on debian uses wayland by default. wayland support in virtualbox's emulated gpu is probably not good, so that's why I asked whether you were using xorg or wayland. twice |
01:13 | <jcbjoe2021> | opening debian right now |

01:33 | <alex11> | and may be slightly easier than i3wm where you need at least two keys pressed to do window management stuff |
01:34 | <tjcarter> | alex11: I have taken to using super for most of my DE-wide keys to leave Ctrl and Alt alone for applications to use. I ditched Ctrl-Alt-T for starting a terminal … Super-Enter |
01:34 | <alex11> | what's really annoying is when you want to use keys like super in i3 and have to open xmodmap and figure out how to do it |

01:36 | <alex11> | and then ctrl/alt conflicts with so many applications |
01:36 | <tjcarter> | The happy medium, I suspect, is for the WM to lack a configuration interface, but have a separate program for that. |
01:36 | <joe_> | sney, any command you want me to run. when i open gnome and click activities and go to search and type terminal it stutters really bad. still unknown display |
01:36 | <tjcarter> | Window Maker was like that. |

01:40 | <sney> | jcbjoe2021: no, if the problem is the same with gnome on xorg then it's probably just some issue with the virtualbox gpu code. |

11:52 | <sychill> | i ran “pdfimages -all” on a PDF that was produced by a Canon scanner (the big office industrial variety), and the files that were extracted were *.ccitt files. How can I convert them? Seems ImageMagick is unaware of this filetype, and running “aptitude search ~dccitt” isn't too interesting |
11:53 | <sychill> | i wonder why a scanner is producing these files. Quality looks fine, but CCITT is technically a FAX format IIUC. |
11:55 | <sychill> | Gimp & Imagemagick are both stumped by this file |

14:00 | <r4fkramer> | Hi all. Please, I have a debian stretch 9.13 installation here. Is there any problem upgrading it directly to bullseye 11.0, or should I have to upgrade it to buster before going to bullseye ? |

17:38 | <r4fkramer> | Hi all, please, I'm going to upgrade debian 'stretch' to 'buster' (I have to proceed this way before finally going to 'bullseye', as suggested me here). But I face this error, related to an old skype installation. Please, how do I avoid it ? |
17:38 | <r4fkramer> | https://paste.debian.net/1212299/ |
17:39 | <somiaj> | it is often suggested you remove non debian packages during upgrade |
17:39 | <r4fkramer> | Better saying: please, how to fix it ? |
17:39 | <somiaj> | Two things, (1) this isn't an error, notice it is a "W:" or warning, so there is nothing wrong |
17:40 | <somiaj> | (2) just remove the old sources.list also remove any skype packages to increase sucess |
17:40 | <somiaj> | I would also remove backports, you don't want/need them during the upgrade process |
17:40 | <r4fkramer> | Fine somiaj, it is really a non debian package. I tried to purge it, but couldn't remove it like that. Yes, you are right: it's not exactly an error. |
17:40 | -!- | faith2901 [~marlu@179-236-126-206.user.veloxzone.com.br] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds] |
17:40 | <somiaj> | this is not a package, this is a repo, remove the repo from /etc/apt/sources.list{.d} |
17:41 | <somiaj> | I was just aying if you also have skype pakages installed, remove them can also help improve the sucess of the upgrade |
17:41 | <r4fkramer> | Fine, somiaj, I'll do it now, and remove backports also. Thank you very much for attention. |
17:41 | <somiaj> | comment out backports is enough, just so it doesn't accidently get int he way (it shouldn't but always best to be safe) |
17:42 | <r4fkramer> | Let me see: there is /etc/apt/sources.list.d - is that the correct syntax ? |
17:42 | <r4fkramer> | or terminology ? |
17:43 | <somiaj> | that is a directory that also can have sources, some packages put files there |
17:44 | <r4fkramer> | Yes, I realized that now. It's a directory. Should I just remove it through 'rmdir' ? |
17:44 | <r4fkramer> | rmdir /etc/apt/sources.list.d ? |
17:44 | -!- | xellophane [~xellophan@c-73-95-239-22.hsd1.co.comcast.net] has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!] |
17:45 | <somiaj> | no |
17:45 | <somiaj> | you just have multiple files you may need to remove things from, though if the skype sources are a single file, remove that file is fine |
17:46 | <r4fkramer> | Sorry, but it's not so clear for me yet. Where can I find this file I have to remove it ? |

17:48 | <r4fkramer> | skype-stable.list teamviewer.list tox.list - please, somiaj, this one ? |
17:48 | <r4fkramer> | root@debian:/etc/apt/sources.list.d# ls - the way I followed |
17:49 | <somiaj> | I would personally use no thrid party sources during the upgrade, but only you know which of those sources you want on this machine |
17:50 | <somiaj> | things in those files are treated the same way as sources.list so you can always temporally comment them out |
17:50 | <r4fkramer> | Yes, I removed the skype-stable list and teamviewer files |
17:51 | <r4fkramer> | It was a lapse I made installing these non debian packages. From now, I don't intend to do it anymore. |
17:51 | <somiaj> | installing non debian packages is fine, there are use cases for it, upgrades are just one place you may want to temporally remove them |

17:52 | <r4fkramer> | Yes, but the question in my case is: I don't want these packages anymore. Should I do anything else prior to upgrade debian now ? |
17:54 | <somiaj> | if you don't want them remove the sources and purge the packages |
17:55 | <somiaj> | I'm just pointing out, there is nothing wrong with third party packages, they just can make upgrades harder, and are best uninstalled/reinstalled during upgrades |

17:56 | <r4fkramer> | Now, I don't remember how to remove its sources and how to purge them. I tried to purge skype yesterday, but 'apt purge skype' didn't work. |
17:58 | <somiaj> | check the package names, use dpkg -l to check installed packages, though maybe you didn't have skype installed, but just had the sources file hiding around |

21:43 | <Pablito> | Hi : I was hoping I could get a little help with a mess I have made. I have a small headless home server that is running a PHP app, SSH, etc. Everything was fine until I decided to change the eth0 interface from dhcp to static. Following the change (/etc/networking/interfaces) I rebooted, but I couldn't even ping it. I reverted the changes to the file and rebooted. I can now ping the box (DHCP server shows |
21:44 | <Pablito> | Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction? |
21:44 | <jkc> | Can you post what you entered for your static IP configuration? |
21:44 | <Pablito> | The web server is also not reachable by the way. |
21:44 | <Pablito> | Thanks jkc, but at this point I would be happy to just get dhcp working again. |
21:45 | <jkc> | Pastebin your interfaces file. |
21:45 | <Pablito> | Actually, I was following this article : https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-setup-a-static-ip-address-on-debian-linux |
21:46 | <enigma9o7> | 90% of the people who ask questions here are super duper computer experts. |
21:46 | <jkc> | Unless that URL is your interfaces file, it doesn't help much. :) Which would you like to do? Static or DHCP? |
21:46 | <enigma9o7> | and the people that answer those wquertions,t heres like thousands of them, just waiting til a smart question comes by |
21:46 | <enigma9o7> | this world is amazing |
21:47 | <enigma9o7> | pablito, good luck, and jkc, thanks for the help |
21:47 | <Brigo> | enigma9o7, was NetworkManager running? |
21:48 | <enigma9o7> | hmmm no idea, prett sure it probably is, but im good, just in awe |
21:48 | <jkc> | I feel like I've missed something. |
21:49 | <Brigo> | enigma9o7, the first step of that guide is to stop network manager and disable it. Enabling it back could solve your problem |

21:49 | <Pablito> | I can get it, but it will take a few minutes. It isn't on this machine and as I can't SSH... well. :) |
21:49 | <jkc> | Pablito: Which do you want? Static or DHCP? |
21:49 | <Brigo> | enigma9o7, sorry XDD |
21:50 | <Pablito> | Static if possible. |
21:50 | <Brigo> | Pablito, i wrote to enigma9o7 what was intended for you :) |
21:50 | <jkc> | Pablito: Okay. What IP address, prefix length/subnet mask, and what's the gateway IP? |
21:51 | <Pablito> | 192.168.5.10 255.255.255.0 192.168.5.1 |
21:52 | <jkc> | And what's the interface named? |
21:53 | <Pablito> | eth0 |
21:54 | <jkc> | https://gist.github.com/jcoffm/d306020b42aff146ea25567256414aa7 |
21:54 | <jkc> | That's your static config. |
21:56 | <jkc> | You might need an extra line in there to handle DNS, depending on how things are configured on the box. But that will at least get you an IP. |

22:02 | <mi11k1> | raven523, so is there a better path? |
22:02 | <somiaj> | Pablito: another suggestion, if you have control of the dhcp server, you can have it provide a static ip based on the machines mac address |
22:02 | <raven523> | you would need to inspect the device properties with udefv to see which device is which |
22:03 | <mi11k1> | raven523, so like, s /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb4/4-1/4-1.6/4-1.6:1.0/input/input29 |
22:03 | <mi11k1> | ? |
22:03 | <raven523> | or use udev rules to make static symlinks based on matching properties |
22:03 | <Pablito> | jkc : Thanks, I will try that and report back. I might as well add the DNS bits in now. What else should I add to the interfaces file? |
22:03 | <raven523> | the /sys/devices files are not /dev nodes |
22:03 | <somiaj> | Connorw_: depends on what your business needs are. If all of your needs are met in the debian packages, I'd use them, but if you need newer packages, setting up a ruby virtual enviorment for what you need is useful. |
22:03 | <mi11k1> | ok |
22:03 | <raven523> | but you can check the information there to find out which dev node to use |
22:03 | <mi11k1> | ok tynaks |

23:14 | <dasunt> | I'm looking at https://wiki.debian.org/Bind9 and I'm thinking it may be out of date. |
23:15 | <dasunt> | Can anyone who is much more knowledgeable than bind take a quick look and tell me if I'm doing something horribly wrong, or if it is out of date? |
23:15 | <dasunt> | Bullseye, btw. |

23:19 | <Sqrt{not}> | dasunt, what are you doing? |
23:21 | <dasunt> | Sqrt{not}: I'm playing around with a test lab environment and setting up DHCP and DNS. I couldn't get the debian documentation to work at all, so I went off of another site. I have isc-dhcp and bind9 running now. bind9 does resolve on the test network (domain: lab.test). dhcp is serving ip addresses to clients. But I can't get the two to update each other. |

23:21 | <dasunt> | So say I have "dummy.lab.test" get assigned 10.10.10.25 by the DHCP server. The DHCP server never updates bind. |
23:23 | <dasunt> | https://pastebin.com/Mump0k01 <- That's the setup under bind. |
23:25 | <dasunt> | https://pastebin.com/y36UjXSp <- That's the dhcpd.conf file |
23:25 | <dasunt> | dhdpd does not appear to be attempting to register any leases with bind though. |
23:27 | <dasunt> | Oh dangit. I see the issue. |

23:37 | <dasunt> | Okay, ran into a problem with apparmor, but worked around it by giving usr.sbin/named rw permissions to /etc/bind. Which is probably a security nightmare but this is a private test network. |
