05:03<umlaeute>is there a way to pin a repository "repoB", so that 'apt upgrade' would re-install packages from repoB even though the same version can be found in repoA?
05:05<umlaeute>i think there ought to be a way, since if i install a local package (with `dpkg -i`) and a same-version package can be found in the archives, apt suggests to upgrade to the version from the archives
05:07<coruja>you want to read about apt preferences, e.g. https://manpages.debian.org/bullseye/apt/apt_preferences.5.en.html
05:09<umlaeute>i did (at least the explanation about pinning priorities), but i don't seem to be able to full understand them.
05:10<umlaeute>i can't really downgrade the priority of repoA...

05:27<umlaeute>that's besides the point
05:28<umlaeute>if you insist, i'm sure i can provide the same example on my pristine sid installation.
05:31<umlaeute>and quite obviously, my repoB is not going to be an "official" repository, otherwise: what would be the point of this exercise? (in Debian i have a guarantee that a package of a given version is the same-same, regardless of origin; so there's little merit in making sure that a package is sidegraded to another repository even if both have the same version)

06:29<umlaeute>LebedevRI: in general you don't, as it depends on the underlying buildsystem and how it is invoked.
06:30<umlaeute>if you are using 'dh' then it tries to do guesswork based on the buildsystem
06:30<umlaeute>if you don't use dh but roll your own invocation, then you should know where you are building ;-)
06:31<umlaeute>oh, and 'dh' takes a --builddirectory= argument, where you can override the default.

10:07<somiaj>lpetux: if you really know what you are doing (making sure depends are met and you aren't mixing libraries) you can try the buster version, but this isn't supported and you do need to make sure depends don't mess your system up

13:02<sney>it doesn't look like the gnome team is using experimental atm, so if there's a new upload of 41 it'd probably go to sid. no idea on the schedule.

15:06<jkc>Guest673: That's not really a support question, that's a how-to. In general, you'll use nftables for the firewall and NAT portions, and if you want additional functionality, you can add it.
15:07<sney>there are loads of "linux firewall howto" articles online, look for one that's recent and it will generally work the same for any distro. usually you'll have nftables/iptables as well as dnsmasq for typical consumer router-like functionality.

15:09<Nonglobal_>Thanks sney !
15:09<sney>you may want to upgrade the kernel+firmware first before the rest of the packages, just to make sure
15:10<Nonglobal_>Do you have some documentation in mind to read how to perform that?
15:10<sney>dpkg: buster->bullseye
15:10<dpkg>Read (at least) the upgrading chapter of <release notes> https://deb.li/39cyD . TL;DR: In /etc/apt/sources.list change "buster" to "bullseye", fix the line for security updates (see <bullseye-security>), remove stable-specific lines like buster-backports. apt update && apt upgrade && apt full-upgrade. 3rd party repos like <dmo> cause problems with upgrades. If working over ssh, upgrade ssh first, see <bullseye ssh upgrade>.

22:49<dvs>anix: custom entries in apt.conf.d? Sounds like you pulled in packages from bullseye while on buster.
22:50-!-secntech [~secntech@0002a124.user.oftc.net] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
22:50<anix>yes
22:50<dvs>-_-
22:50<anix>had to add buster as "default-release"
22:50<jkc>anix: And you understand why that's a very bad idea and that you should never, ever do that again?
22:50<anix>to increase buster packages priority
22:51<anix>I had to - to get new software
22:52<jkc>Read what I just said. Do not ever do that again.
22:52<jkc>!frankendebian
22:52<dpkg>When you get random packages from random repositories, mix multiple releases of Debian, or mix Debian and derived distributions, you have a mess. There's no way anyone can support this "distribution of Frankenstein" and #debian certainly doesn't want to even try. See https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian and <reinstall>
22:52<anix>and I only do it for the bare minimum packages necessary
22:53<jkc>You keep adding caveats as if that changes what's being said.
22:53<danielssan>anix: why didn't you upgrade to bullseye if you really need more up to date packages?
22:53<jkc>It doesn't. See the previous.
22:53<anix>yes, it's scary - there is alot of chance for dependency hell

22:54<jkc>anix: It's not a chance of dependency hell, its a guarantee. And that's why you don't do that. So don't ever do that again.
22:55<anix>i.e. I had about 2300 buster packages and maybe 5 manually installed bullseye packages - problem is they want bullseye dependencies - that's when things get sketchy
22:55<jkc>anix: That's not a problem, that's why you don't do that to begin with.

22:58<anix>well, now I can probably straighten things out now - with a straight upgrade to bullseye - and stick to bullseys packages
22:58<jkc>And don't ever mix releases again. If you need newer software, that's why the backports repo exists.
22:59<jkc>There's also simple backports from sid.
22:59<jkc>!ssb
22:59<dpkg>First, check for a backport on <debian-backports>. If unavailable: 1) Add a deb-src line for sid (not a deb line!); ask me about <deb-src sid> 2) enable debian-backports (see <bdo>) 3) apt update; apt install build-essential; apt build-dep packagename 4) apt -b source packagename 5) dpkg -i packagename-ver.deb To change compilation options, see <package recompile>; for versions newer than sid see <uupdate>.
