02:51<anjan>hi all, I installed zoom deb package but the proprietary app is too spooky so I removed it and decided to use the web version
02:51<anjan>is there anything I should be worried about in terms of it leaving a trace or can I trust apt?
02:52<erle->I have two actively used Debian Sid installations: one desktop and one laptop. Both are configured pretty much the same. If I change language and formats in the laptop, the language is changed (in my case German) but the formats stay American. on the desktop everything works
02:52<tjcarter>anjan: if you wanna make sure the traces are gone, you can make sure the package is purged, not merely removed
02:53<erle->I ruled out my personal configuration: if I create a new user, the new user has the same problem.
02:53<anjan>tjcarter: how would i do that
02:53<erle->any idea what could be missing?
02:53<erle->on the desktop, everything works as expected.

02:53<grawity>tbh zoom's linux app seemed rather normal – less spooky than e.g. teamviewer
02:53<erle->especially time and date formats are wrong, but also file size formats
02:53<tjcarter>anjan: dpkg --purge zoom as root (if that's how the package was named)
02:53-!-eightdot [~eightdot@customer-212-084-140-031.solcon.nl] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
02:53<tjcarter>grawity: yeah, I keep zoom around for people who wanna use it, but I use the flatpak
02:54<grawity>tjcarter: if they're worried about the app doing something weird, dpkg --purge isn't going to catch all the files that it may or may not create everywhere
02:54<tjcarter>grawity: that way spooky or not, it's at least sandboxed when in use
02:54<grawity>like /var/lib/.foo/..shady/zoom/etc
02:54<tjcarter>grawity: yeah but it's an electron app, it's relatively tame
02:55<anjan>oh is zoom an electron app?
02:55<tjcarter>grawity: purging it will remove any actual traces it leaves behind
02:55<anjan>then, Im not as worried.
02:55<grawity>no, zoom was a qt5 app last time I checked?

02:55<grawity>yes, it was a native qt5 app
02:55<anjan>derp, I always thought electron was a chromium wrapper or something
02:55<grawity>teams is the electron one
02:55<tjcarter>I'm thinking of wire, sorry
02:55<anjan>Im prolly wrong
02:56<tjcarter>different messenger app with video chat facility
02:56<grawity>but electron can still do anything it wants – I mean, vscode is an electron app and it can do all your dev stuff
02:56<anjan>well anyways, I have it installed on my laptop just in case
02:56<grawity>but tbh
02:56<anjan>ok...so moral of the story is use dpkg --purge zoom
02:56<anjan>as root
02:56<grawity>zoom being a qt5 app is somehow why I trusted it *more* than some electron thing
02:56<anjan>ya, I guess
02:57<anjan>I appreciate the help guys

07:20<qqq>this is very bad that you need to register on IRC, on Libera to ask questions on #debian
07:21<qqq>anyway. How to, as root, totally disable wifi. Block any chance of user turning on wifi by accident. like, some /etc setting or uninstall something? e.g. network-applet can instantly turn on and connect to wifi when GUI starts
07:22<ansgar>Disconnect the wifi hardware.
07:22<qqq>ansgar: sure, I mean an esaier way (in soft)
07:22<mjt>ansgar: (re wyaland & gdm): yeah, found it. I rebooted machine finally and now "Gnome" session is available in the session type list in gdm. Before that there was no such option. I dunno what happened :)
07:25<danielssan>qqq: hm, if you want to rely on software, there should be a software switch, or you could remove the wifi software (mostly wpa_supplicant which handles the encryption part)
07:25<mjt>btw, didn't they re-write wpasupplicant in systemd already? :)

11:35<istrive>my ultimate goal is to have the script running every other friday, not every friday!
11:35<mjt>so evaluate the expression manually first? within shell?
11:36<mjt>what the problem is?
11:36<mjt>I don't think %W is good for that, btw
11:37<mjt>maybe %U
11:37<istrive>that should be the syntaxe for doing the intended purpose, but it is not working...

11:40<istrive>FYI, I am no expert in Linux, if you could elaborate a bit more in layman terms it would be greatly appreciated! ;)

18:22<somiaj>danielssan: debian doesn't work timeframes, 'when it is ready', and by 'it', in the case of proposed updates, they will come with the next point release. You can look at the release history to get a rough idea about how often they occur.
18:23<somiaj>though I do think there is some fine print (hence the proposed), that the update in the point release may not be identical to the one being proposed.
18:26-!-amcclure [anton@tloks.com] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
18:27<danielssan>somiaj: thanks :) damn, i guess i will install it through backports then
18:27<somiaj>why not install it from release-proposed-updates?
18:27<somiaj>or is this not something in the proposed-updates repo and I missunderstood what you meant.
18:29<danielssan>somiaj: i feel like adding proposed updates implies that you update all packages from there?
18:29<somiaj>no
18:29<danielssan>and basically I just want devscripts, as it's quite annoying that dch --bpo still refers to buster
18:29<danielssan>i know small change but still :)
18:29<somiaj>It is just a small repo that packages are put there for those who want access to them before the point release.
18:30<danielssan>so what happens if the package gets pushed to stable? or when a newer package (revision?) gets pushed to stable in comparison to proposed?
18:30<somiaj>I have installed packages from there that I needed before the point release.

18:35<somiaj>I think its default pinning is low like backports, but unlike backports the packages eventaully make it into stable
18:35<danielssan>hm, added the repo, and apt tells me there are 13 updates, so I guess the pinning is equal to stable :/

18:36<somiaj>or just update now and be ahead of the curve.
18:36<somiaj>or just install the one package you want then remove the repo

18:38-!-mode/#debian [+l 978] by debhelper
18:38<somiaj>+/- are basically simpliar though I think if + and - are in the same spot, the + is higher
18:38<somiaj>the '-' is more used for 'debian revision'
18:38<somiaj>then within th edebian revision, there is ~ (less than) and + (bigger)
18:39<somiaj>so 'foo-3+deb11u1' is the 'foo' is the upstream version, '-3' is the debian reviision, that has been appended with +deb11u1 to say that this is newer than the plain debian revision
18:40<danielssan>so when 11.1 comes out, will the +deb11u1 get removed? or how does that work
18:40<somiaj>nope
18:40<somiaj>that is now part of the version.
18:40<somiaj>foo-3 (initial release of the packgae in stable), foo-3+deb11u1 (the first bugfix of the packgae in debian 11)
18:40<danielssan>so which means some have -3 then others deb11u1 and at a later point even +deb11u3?
18:41<somiaj>danielssan: the -1, -2, -3, are the debian revisions that happen during the normal development cycle in sid
18:41<danielssan>but could they also increase in stable (see kernel?)
18:41<danielssan>or is the kernel rather a unique case?
18:42<somiaj>but once the package makes it to stable, changes are much more targeted, so they don't warent a new debian revision, and are thus only a small patch
18:42<somiaj>well the kernel usually has more than one targeted patch in the fix, it is often multiple things, and the -7 the -8 in the kernel actually means the binary abi has changed, and is meant to let people know they may need to recompile third party modules
18:43<somiaj>so in terms of the kernel, the debian revision also includes the binary abi revision

18:44<danielssan>i guess i will just update all packages then, except the weird part is firefox-esr has a proposed update but apt tells me there is none?
18:44<coruja>debian versioning is quite a science on its own ;)
18:44<danielssan>i guess so :)

22:44<asdflkj>my rat cursor doesn't respond to trackpad input while I'm holding down any non-modifier keyboard key. how do I change that ... should I ask in #Xorg or is it a driver issue or something else? (shouldn't be my WM, it's dwm)

22:47<sney>if that's a laptop with an integrated keyboard/trackpad device, it could be a driver or firmware issue. in linux touchpad drivers are pretty unified these days but there's still sometimes a limited amount of customization you can do
22:47<sney>I would start by looking up articles on linux support for your laptop model though, as it's likely someone else has noticed this one before

23:24<Tj>is there someplace that documents/discusses policy for popular derivatives that use debian archive servers, specifically related to those that might impose a high load on archive servers? (I was musing on at what point the derivatives become an undo burden. To take an extreme example, if Ubuntu installs pointed to debian archive servers rather than building/hosting everything itself)
23:24<Tj>Already looked at https://wiki.debian.org/Derivatives/Guidelines
23:30<sney>the debian mirror infrastructure is so big atm (and backed by a major cdn) that I doubt that's a concern at present
23:30<sney>the derivative would probably need to have more users than debian itself
23:31<Tj>yes, the mirrors effectively externalise the load so it isn't such an issue
23:31<sney>there is a #debian-derivatives channel, you could go there and ask pabs for the official word
23:32<Tj>there is? I didn't find that in the lists (or missed it whilst looking)
