04:17<TobiX>Rizzer: https://wiki.debian.org/UsrMerge
04:18<Rizzer>ah mjt , you're right. /bin is now a symlink to usr/bin
04:18<Rizzer>I see it, thanks TobiX
04:20<Rizzer>it's a problem on buildd, at least from uploading locally built packages. If one component records use of /usr/bin/bash, and another component tries to use it but it's not available ( usr not yet merged). Specifically, https://tests.reproducible-builds.org/debian/rbuild/experimental/amd64/slepc_3.15.0+dfsg1-1exp2.rbuild.log.gz
04:20<Rizzer>petsc keeps a record that it had used /usr/bin/bash
04:20<mjt>that's why when uploading you have to use unmerged /usr
04:21<mjt>btw, why your component "records /usr/bin/bash in the first place?
04:21<Rizzer>mjt, fair call. I uploaded my local petsc build cause I'm trying to test supelu-dist 7 from experimental
04:22<mjt>ah. records *use* of
04:22<Rizzer>why petsc does that, I don't know. Maybe upstream met problems with inconsistent shells on HPC installations
04:23<Rizzer>I think they don't really mean to be recording the path, they're more interested in whether it's bash, zsh or sh

04:27<Rizzer>sounds like essentially the same problem
04:28<Rizzer>I'll resolve the petsc/slepc problem (with superlu-dist 7) soon by pushing the upgraded numerical stack into unstable and starting the migration transition
04:29<mjt>I can't find where it states that for upload you have to use unmerged /usr. But I definitely read it several times
04:30<mjt>iirc bookworm will not support unmerged usr
04:30<mjt>or bookworm+1
04:30<Rizzer>yeah, for uploads to unstable it'll certainly be source-only
04:30<Rizzer>"/usr merge must either be mandatory or not happen at all" ... sounds about right to me

04:33<Rizzer>no, I know about it. I just didn't think about it when slepc started breaking
04:35<Rizzer>to me usrmerge is just a nuisance that causes problems like the one we're discussing. It brings the system closer to some platonic ideal, but I'm not convinced of the real practical advantage of the change

05:09<mjt>it is
05:10<at0m>not if the fs is a container/file that doesn't provide for writing
05:10<rudi_s>So somebody got root on a host but didn't notice / was read-only?
05:10<at0m>one could have the ro fs in an .iso or .img or ..
05:11<mjt>at0m: we use one on a few special-purpose boxes (squashfs actually) - it is very inconvinient.

22:32<somiaj>yea, though I'm unsure how much detail xfce gives at controlling this
22:33<somiaj>though I guess in this case you can just have a sepearate program doing this
22:33<richard_h>xfce seems to call xflock4, which is a shell script that calls light-locker-command --lock
22:33<richard_h>I could presumably modify that to do the muting, but I'm not sure what happens when the screen unlocks

22:35<somiaj>and then just disable xfce's locker and have that call your own custom script

23:26<somiaj>smokeysea: You might have to dig deeper, what happens if you try to install cryptsetup, 'apt install cryptsetup'. My guess is you have some (usually third party) package down the depedency chain keeping libs from upgrading
23:27*tjcarter wishes there was an equivalent for dpkg --{g,s}et-selections that only reported packages set to manual
23:27*tjcarter ponders writing this
23:28<somiaj>maybe aptitude search can search for that?
23:28<smokeysea>somiaj: http://ix.io/3A61
23:28<tjcarter>somiaj: aptitude probably could
23:28<somiaj>smokeysea: so keep moving down the list, and use apt policy packagename each stage to see if the package is available
23:28<tjcarter>somiaj: using that would make the nuke/pave / and restore /home upgrade approach more reasonable
