11:34<SanchoPiensa>amongst others rkhunter said, that /usr/bin/sudo, /sbin/systemcrtl and others have changed hashes and are located in different inodes than they should

14:37<Linux-Fan>Also, you can download a package which is present in a repository in your APT sources by using `apt download <package>`. To specify an architecture different from the default, add it after a colon. On my system, I can do `apt download coreutils:i386` to retrieve the i386 version of coreutils while the machine runs on amd64 with multiarch/i386 enabled.
14:37<mjt>ThothK: in order to use a different architecture *on your system* you should add it to dpkg first (see dpkg --add-architecture). But this will enable this architecture to be installable on your system. If you want to do something else with the packages, you can get a package list for your native architecture and just replace your arch with whatever arch you want
14:38<mjt>Linux-Fan: again, this can only be done after adding this architecture using dpkg --add-architecture
14:40<Linux-Fan>mjt: Yes, thanks for making that detail explicit. I forgot about it in my summary above :)

20:59<TheRealSoundWave>Any suggestions ?
21:00<raven523>convert to GPT, add an EFI System Partition, and install grub for EFI mode with grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --removable
21:02<somiaj>TheRealSoundWave: converting a legacy install to bios takes a bit of work, in general it might be easier to just backup/reinstall
21:02<coruja>when you have installed in bios boot mode, it should start also in bios boot mode and i think you should start debugging there, but maybe i misunderstood the issue
21:03<somiaj>TheRealSoundWave: by portable what do you mean? If you are just going to copy the data over anyways, you just need to make a GPT partition table with an efi partition, and copy all the data over then reinstall grub, all can be done from a live system
21:03<somiaj>though unless you are familar with such things, a fresh install then just copy over the imporant data is easier and not that much more work
21:04<coruja>ah, maybe hardware fail was meant, my bad then

21:06<somiaj>yea sounds like old maching is dying, they want to move install to new machine, and figured uefi would make it more portable
21:06<TheRealSoundWave>The issue is that I'm having harware issues; main hard drive, and disc drive, have both failed. Kernel complaning it cannot comreset theses devices eventough kernel params libata=2.0:disable,2.0:norst,3.0:disable,3.0:norst. The boot time is killing me when if I'n not stuck in a boot/reboot endless cycle
21:06<Hooloovoo>before doing that I would definitely take a backup, one way or another. if the new machine comes with a new drive, there's a couple good ways to do it
21:06<coruja>i read 'starting to fail' as 'failing to start' ;)
21:07<Hooloovoo>backup RIGHT NOW
21:07<Hooloovoo>buy a hard drive if you have to
21:07<somiaj>TheRealSoundWave: my suggestion is just do a fresh install on the new machine, and recover your important data from a backup
21:08<TheRealSoundWave>I habe been customizing this os baby like crazy, dont want to start over again. But indeed, 1 solution would be to start over, but cant bring myself to do that
21:08<somiaj>TheRealSoundWave: Even when I get new hardware, I just do a fresh install, I find it just easier than dealing with the extra work to manually copy an install over and make it bootable, and with switching from legacy to uefi this adds another layer.
21:08<Hooloovoo>though the symptoms you describe might also be caused by a bad SATA controller, I don't think that's too likely
21:08<somiaj>TheRealSoundWave: almost all the customizations are in $HOME which will be backuped, so you should be fine
21:08<somiaj>!aptitude clone
21:08<dpkg>To clone a Debian machine using aptitude (or install your favourite packages) use aptitude search --disable-columns -F%p '~i!~M!~v' > package_list; on the reference machine; xargs aptitude --schedule-only install < package_list; aptitude install; on the other machine. This preserves information about "automatically installed" packages that other methods do not. See also <reinstall>, <things to backup>, <debian clone>, <apt-clone>.

21:09<raven523>does it allow disabling secureboot?
21:10<Hooloovoo>yeah, easiest is a new install. you could also get away with manually setting up some partitions and copying data over but it's a pain
21:10<somiaj>and I wouldn't go about that unless you have experience, there are some sublte things that can go wrong.

21:11<TheRealSoundWave>Hooloovoo: Yep, indeed, might be the controller, but I have an ssd on ATA0.0 which is working fine.
21:11<somiaj>I've done it before, but prefer fresh installs, copy $HOME over (since that is where most the configs live). If you have a backup, you can copy over the configs in /etc too. After that just install the software you need, that aptitude factiod clone is one way to get the same package list. Though personally I dno't use it, since I often have cruft after a while of installing stuff I then don't use.

22:25<somiaj>r4fkramer: I found gnome-music
22:25<r4fkramer>Fine, somiaj, I just forgot about this command.
22:25<somiaj>also you can use packages.debian.org or apt-file to search which package contains the gmplayer binary
22:25<r4fkramer>Is that related to multimedia player similar to vlc

22:26<somiaj>looking at packages.debian.org I see the gmplayer is part of mplayer-gui
22:26<somiaj>so this isn't 'gnome player' it is just a gtk gui for mplayer
22:26<r4fkramer>OK somiaj, thank You for attention and Support :) I'll try 'gnome-music' here

22:27<coruja>celluloid (just) offers a gtk ui to mpv

23:19<Duder>Hail satan
23:20<Duder>So uhh, I'm new to Debian, not super new to Linux, and I'm having trouble installing some dependencies so that I can install a program
23:22<somiaj>!don't break debian
23:22<dpkg>dont break debian is, like, https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian
23:22<Duder>So, the Readme file has given a bunch of different packages to download, and then said, "As with all packages, you just have to do"
23:22<Duder>And then it's thrown a bunch of commands at me. Fair enough, but I'm practically a novice; so when it simply says, "./configure", and I put that into the terminal and it doesn't work, I'm kind of at a loss.
23:23<raven523>./configure usually tells you what failed
23:23<somiaj>Okay, this is a bit different, you are trying to build some source and are missing the build depends. What library is it not able to find?
23:23<somiaj>I thought you were just trying to install some random .deb
23:24<Duder>I'm... Okay, let's start again.
23:24<Duder>I'm trying to install a program
23:24<Duder>The readme file for said program has stated it needs some prerequisites; and has given me lackluster instructions on how to get these prerequisites.
23:25<raven523>usuaully you'll install lib<whatever>-dev for those dependencies
23:25<Duder>Speak baby talk to me, raven
23:26<Duder>I'm still at the stage where I need people to tell me -exactly- what to type into the console
23:26<alex11>can you paste the readme into paste.debian.org or something?
23:26<raven523>can you paste the output of the configure script to https://paste.debian.net/ then paste the link to the post here?
23:26<Duder>I don't already know what commands go where, and with whatever prefixes they might need.
23:26<alex11>er sorry it's .net
23:26<Duder>I... can try. I'm between two different computers right now

23:28<Duder>Which says...
23:28<somiaj>Duder: list list a name of a few of the packages you installed (also you said downloaded some packages, what did you download and why not use apt?)
23:28<somiaj>Duder: okay, so we are still early on, just trying to catch up where it is.
23:28<somiaj>Duder: what packages does the readme say you need to install?

23:49<somiaj>yes
23:49<somiaj>without the quotes
23:49<Duder>Okay. It returned to me my username
23:49<somiaj>then you aren't root, you need to be root to install software

23:53<Duder>That's just it. I don't know how.
23:53<Sqrt{not}>ummmm. what made you want to install it?
23:53<Duder>Not a great question to ask somebody.
23:53<Duder>It's not coming up as a program
23:54<Duder>And beyond that, I'm honestly not experienced enough to have a clue what to do.
23:54<Sqrt{not}>not coming up how? how do you expect it to come up?
23:55<Duder>By clicking on the start menu, or whatever the equivalent is called, and then searching in the text field at the top?
23:55<raven523>it's CLI only
23:55<Duder>I don't know how experienced with Linux you guys think I am.
23:55<Duder>But please, assume that I'm a complete novice.
23:55<Duder>Like, never touched a computer before. Banged rocks together for fun up until this very day.
23:56<Sqrt{not}>maybe you could give a hint of what you want to accomplish with gpg?
23:56<Duder>Well, what's it for?
23:56<Sqrt{not}>it has several different uses.
23:56<Duder>All related to encryption?
23:56<Sqrt{not}>,i gpg
23:57<judd>Package gpg (utils, optional) in bullseye/amd64: GNU Privacy Guard -- minimalist public key operations. Version: 2.2.27-2; Size: 905.7k; Installed: 1560k; Homepage: https://www.gnupg.org/
23:57<raven523>for encrypting, decrypting, signing, and verifying messages using public key cryptography and for managing those keys
23:57<Duder>Well, there ya go.
23:57<Sqrt{not}>you could start with this command, which is the help file for gpg: man gpg
23:58<Duder>Honestly, I might try another way to get help with this.
23:58<coruja>Duder: maybe you want to read some hardcopy or online book covering an introduction to linux oder debian to get used to it more
23:58<Sqrt{not}>Duder, or, alternatively, you might want to use some graphical program for whatever, and that graphics program might internally user gpg
23:58<Duder>I think you guys are way above me in terms of knowledge.
23:58<nurupo>the programs that show up in the Start menu are the ones that have a user interface. gpg has no user interface, it's terminal-only. you interact with it just like you interact with "apt" - by typing commands in the terminal and reading the output back
23:59<Duder>That's fine, nurupo.
