01:54<centrx>uh what
01:54<centrx>ok
01:54<centrx>hello
01:54<pi123>i don't really understand what the installer is doing
01:55<pi123>it asked me if i want to use non-free firmware from removable media, then mentioned i guess a wifi driver
01:55<pi123>something like rtl8181818.bin. but then it asked for wifi password and correctedly listed my wifi networks
01:55<somiaj>debian main does not include any non-free software (according to the DFSG)
01:55<pi123>ok. then how is it accessing my wifi network then
01:55<centrx>my audio system doesn't work. I've determined it may be fixed in Linux kernel 5.15. I want to find the Debian kernel packagers and ask them when they think it might be in. No pressure, might even help if I can. What should I do?
01:56<sney>the firmware is optional for some drivers
01:56<somiaj>Some hardware (wifi espically) requires non-free firmware to run properly, so the installer is just letting you know that your wifi may need non-free firmware to function fully
01:56<pi123>so is it reading that firmware from the dvd disc?
01:56<sney>the installer doesn't know which ones, it just displays a warning if a supported firmware file is missing
01:56<pi123>ok. it sounded like it wanted me to insert a usb stick with the .bin file on it
01:56<somiaj>Yea, some cards contain firmware on them, and will use that if userland firmware is not found.
01:56<pi123>it gave a yes/no prompt
01:57<pi123>it wouldn't accept yes so i picked no
01:57<somiaj>that is the way the fully free installer can uses non-free firmawre during the install, is if you download and provide it on a separate usb stick.
01:57-!-user [~user@7YZAADQNQ.tor-irc.dnsbl.oftc.net] has joined #debian
01:57-!-user is "user" on #debian
01:57<pi123>so it asked for the non-free firmware but then went ahead and used the free firmware?
01:57-!-user is now known as Guest2490
01:57<somiaj>that is because you probably didn't download and provide the firmware it wanted, which is fine, if the wifi is working, you can install the firmware later.
01:57<pi123>i'm confused what it wants
01:57<pi123>why would i need to install firmware if the wifi is already operating?
01:58<somiaj>that is not what I said, I said some chips contain firmware on them, and it will use the internal firmware instead (though often the newer firmware contains bug fixes and various improvements from the manufacture)
01:58<centrx><pil23> seems like there's something missing in what you're telling us
01:58<pi123>centrx: i'm just telling you what the installer said.
01:59<sney>pi123: the installer displays a warning if a driver is loaded that supports firmware, and the firmware file is not present. that warning doesn't mean the driver won't work, it varies from driver to driver.
01:59<sney>!warning
01:59<dpkg>Yerp, lots of software outputs warnings. Kernel module warnings on boot, possible missing firmware warnings, GTK warnings, X11 warnings, build warnings, gpg warnings. Don't be scared - informative output is a GOOD THING. Consider yourself warned, and if the program works as expected, be happy.
01:59-!-truth2 [~fact@8VQAAD5CW.tor-irc.dnsbl.oftc.net] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
01:59<sney>(realtek in particular are inconsistent about this)
01:59<pi123>ok. i didn't understand the message.

01:59-!-truth2 is "realname" on #debian-privacy #oftc #tor #debian #bash #talos-workstation #networking
01:59<somiaj>the installer deteced that some firmware the module wanted was missing when it loaded, in that case it gives you an option to provide that firmware. In this case it isn't mandatory that you provide it, but the installer doesn't know that, the installer just knows the kernel was wanting some firmware and it wasn't there.
01:59<pi123>it sure made it sound mandatory
02:00<pi123>but then it went ahead and installed the base system. so that's good at least
02:00<somiaj>for many wifi cards firmware is mandatory to get them to work. YOu can install the base system without a network connection.
02:01<pi123>so i just got lucky and this realtek card happened to have working firmware?
02:01<somiaj>the installer doesn't know all of the varioations in chips/cards, it only knows what the kernel driver told it, which is it failed to load firmware, so it sides on caution, thinking you may need it.
02:02<pi123>somiaj: ah i see. makes sense

07:30<kridai>Hi everyone, This is Kridai, I am currently looking into packaging a nodejs application for debian. I wanted to check if there is any metric support for packages uploaded into debian official repo, which could inform us the number of download there has been for a particular package, Something similar to what is provided by npm. I tried researching, but could fine anything concrete. I did go through this page https://wiki.debian.org/Statistics
07:32<kridai>But the link mentioned http://metrics.debian.net/ doesn't work. I also checked https://popcon.debian.org/ but for this user need to specifically enroll (install popularity-contest package, which update the data periodically), hence if would not provide the correct metrics
07:33<bremner>kridai: popcon is probably the only relevant tool. Generally Debian uses an extensive network of mirrors and hates tracking, so tracking every download is not likely to happen

08:36<kridai>grove: I know there is always a possibility of someone else providing a download option that isn't tracked. But we would still want to track the downloads from sources that we can. I may be assuming things here, but I expect downloads for apt/snap to be on a higher side that for other download sources created by someone else. To give some context its package for twilio-cli https://github.com/twilio/twilio-cli. its open source
08:36<koollman>(even on ubuntu, that repo wouldn't work anymore)
08:38<test>@azeem actually contrib can also contain free software that depends on other free softwares not on debian. which is the case of torbrowser-launcher, I learned that just another day :)
08:38<test>please correct me if I'm wrong

09:01<test>But winetricks doesn't require DLLs by itself, does it?
09:01<bentham>correction: Not all users of wine require the DLLs to which winetricks provides access.
09:02<test>I see. But I agree with the point made in the bug above
09:02<test>winetricks is in the same category as other applications that may download free software and may also download proprietary software if the user wants to, like a web browser.
09:03<bentham>Debian has guidelines about that.
09:04<test>I don't see how they could undoubtedly solve this question.
09:05<test>a web browser and a bittorrent client also can (and most of the time do) download lots of proprietary software, but the free ones are still on main.
09:05<test>winetricks is the same thing, it can download free and also proprietary librarys that softwares require
09:08<nr0q_radio>by that standard, apt-get could be non-free if it's able to access the non-free repo, I'd be curious of what the detail is that they are saying puts one non-free, and one free

11:29<blast007>you may have old PHP packages from upgrading from stretch.
11:29<yang>yes, how do I fix that ;) ?
11:30<blast007>you should install the php-mysql (and similar) packages so that Debian tracks the current version. You should also remove the old packages. You can find packages that aren't in your repos with 'aptitude search ~o'

11:32<umlaeute>blast007: fair enough (and true)
11:32<koollman>dist-upgrade would have removed them if they were from debian mirror, I think. They may be packages from some other repository

13:43<golgo13>(The whole thing started because "grub-mkconfig" was not found in my $PATH. Why is /usr/sbin/ not in default path....)
13:43<sney>an efi system should not have grub-pc installed, so yes, remove that. and make sure grub-efi is installed. and then update-grub && grub-install /dev/sdX, where X is your disk
13:44<sney>!sbin
13:44<dpkg>Some binaries, particularly system utilities are installed to /sbin or /usr/sbin rather than /bin or /usr/bin. The former directories are not in a standard user's PATH. Try calling them directly, e.g. /sbin/ifconfig, or running them as root. See also <buster su>.
13:45<sney>this is historical UNIX stuff for privilege separation. there's not much in the sbin directories that is even useful to an unprivileged user, so it's only in root's PATH. if you are going to say "but I am root and it's still not there," then what you're seeing is this:
13:45<sney>!buster su
13:45<dpkg>Starting with buster, su no longer overrides PATH by default, requiring that you use "su -" or "su -l" for login shells (which is not really a new thing at all...). See https://wiki.debian.org/NewInBuster#Changes for details.
13:45<Guest1247>the ones in /sbin or /usr/sbin usually require root, use them with sudo

18:46<somiaj>~/.xsession is similar to .xinitrc, but can also be used by display managers, and I believe it runs the system stuff in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/ as well

18:50<anjan>somiaj: ^
18:50<anjan>wait
18:51<anjan>hmmm, your right
18:51<somiaj>sure, but what I think is happening is if you don't have .xinitrc, the default one is read, /etc/X11/xinitrc, which calls the default debian /etc/X11/Xsession which does various things, and that will source $HOME/.xsession if it exists, I see "USERXSESSION=$HOME/.xsession"
18:51<somiaj>so using .xsession would do everything your fix is doing without having to do anything
18:51<anjan>oh fug
18:51<anjan>I could just rm .xinitrc on my machine
18:51<anjan>and I could get the same result
18:51<anjan>ok I will do that and update my blog post
18:51<anjan>thanks!
18:52<somiaj>yea, in Debian, my experince is .xsession is what you should use to write a custom Xsession, since it works nicely with startx/debian's Xsession scripts, and display managers
18:52<somiaj>.xsessionrc is useful if you want stuff loaded before some other xsession (such as gnome)
18:52<somiaj>though in your case, .xsession should be sufficent for what you need
