01:37<Phoman>Hi all! In my company we are running multiple Debian on client systems (Thinkpad laptops). Due to certification requirements, we will unfurtunately be required to perform some kind of monitoring to ensure that the devices have a recent patch level and that security updates have been applied. We are looking for a minimally invasive solution which does not require us to install agents.
01:37-!-cowboypenguin [~dan@107-209-165-75.lightspeed.hstntx.sbcglobal.net] has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
01:37<Phoman>Does anybody here have something similar deployed and could answer some questions/provide recommendations? https://github.com/furlongm/patchman seems to look promising and i will evaluate it in a few VMs later.

01:40<Phoman>The solution does not need to perform the actual installation but rather provide some kind of central management software to with information so that it can be seen which devices have not applied the update yet
01:44<sney>if you're using apt to deliver/query your updates, it's pretty trivial to get that information by ssh
01:45<sney>you might even look at nagios's check_by_ssh script for deployment hints, even if you don't use nagios plugins at the client end

02:03<sney>Phoman: well, you either have an agent of some sort on the client machine sending passive check results, or you pull via some existing service. snmp might be on the table. or hmm, an inetd only enabling ssh on a certain port in response to certain queries?
02:03<sney>though in lieu of an agent I guess you could have a cron job that just generates a report and sends email

03:12<aloo_home>brilliant, now this client is working, too, albeit from home. that leaves 2 explanations: either, sshd+its env on my server magically self-healed after a while, or the wlan host in town (or anybody on the way) was doing something messy

16:16<asdfasd>Hello! I have Debian 10 with PHP 7.3 installed. One thing is that I have php-cli installed (at least it says when I try to install it), but php-cli command does not exist???
16:17<asdfasd>Under /usr/bin/ there is php and php7.3 but not php-cli
16:17<sarnold>asdfasd: try dpkg -L php-cli to see which files are in that package
16:17<asdfasd>Only /usr/share/doc/php-cli
16:18<sarnold>aha, I should have looked at the package description first :)
16:19<tjcarter>asdfasd: do you have a php?
16:19<asdfasd>Yes
16:19<tjcarter>you likely also have a php7.3
16:19<asdfasd>Everything works fine with PHP, I just wanted to use php-cli and now I'm experiencing that
16:20<asdfasd>Yes, PHP 7.3
16:20<sarnold>it looks like php-cli exists solely to depend upon whatever package actually provides the /usr/bin/php executable
16:21<tjcarter>it's an /etc/alternatives entry
16:21<sarnold>because that package name changes to reflect the php version, having a metapackage that depends upon that package lets you just run "apt install php-cli" and whatever happens next doesn't matter much, but there'll be a /usr/bin/php when it's done :)
16:21<tjcarter>created by /var/lib/dpkg/info/php7.3-cli.postinst
16:22<asdfasd>so /usr/bin/php is actually php-cli?
16:22<tjcarter>or php-cli.postinst, I dunno … I have 7.4 here
16:22<tjcarter>yup
16:23<tjcarter>I use it to test my php pages locally
16:23<asdfasd>Oh you're right, I just checked /usr/bin/php -i | grep "memory_limit" and it returns -1

21:48<ac>Is it better to use hdmi cable over regular vga or that other one?
21:49<zoke>ac: hdmi or displayport > vga
21:49<zoke>ac: digital signal vs analog...
21:50<sussudio>i use dvi when possible
21:50<ac>sussudio, dvi over hdmi?\

21:51<sussudio>i don't have hdmi, just dvi or displayport
21:51<somiaj>a 1030 doesn't have hdmi or a display port?
21:51<zoke>hdmi and displayport superseeds dvi... so hdmi or displayport should be the better options
21:51<sussudio>depends on the version, i guess. i'm sure they still sell one with vga too
21:51<ac>somiaj, no it has dvi and hdmi, at least I think it is hdmi, I just assumed, but now that sussudio mentions display port, maybe that is what it is
21:52<ac>no it is hdmi, it says hdmi on box so that is what it must be

23:23<somiaj>what arch are you running on?
23:23<tp43_>amd64
23:23<somiaj>why not just man debootstrap and look at the options, though that works fine for me, but my host is amd64.
23:24<tp43_>somiaj, ok yeah, I didn't read the man that is true. I can do that much. Can't be that lazy.

23:50<tp43_>somiaj, you did debootstrap on debian 11?
23:50<somiaj>yes, I have no issues with deboostrap on amd64 with bullseye
23:50<tp43_>somiaj, what the heck, that is same here. I have bullseye and amd64. I did the command and I am getting that error

23:51<tp43_>wait it is working now. Only difference it I did it using sudo instead of su
23:52<tp43_>I must have had a type somewhere
23:52<somiaj>!buster su
23:52<dpkg>Starting with buster, su no longer overrides PATH by default, requiring that you use "su -" or "su -l" for login shells (which is not really a new thing at all...). See https://wiki.debian.org/NewInBuster#Changes for details.
23:52<tp43_>if it worked with sudo, it would have worked with su, must be a type there
23:53<tp43_>somiaj, yeah but I thought instead of su -, I could just do su and then do /sbin/debootstrap. I mean deboostrap part was working. I will mkdir another one, and try again to confirm what went wrong
23:54<tp43_>Pretty much anything I missing that I try to use is in /sbin. I can't recall what.
23:55<somiaj>deboostrap is a script, it calls other programs that may have not been in your $PATH
23:56<tp43_>yep, I did it again, and that was it. Works with su - not with su
23:56<tp43_>somiaj, thx again.
23:56<tp43_>I would have given up if not for you
