01:47<truth2>kidx, Thanks. I expect the answer depends on whether you're using Debian, and if so, which distribution. Debian's testing and unstable distributions seem to have version 27.1.3+dfsg1-1, much like https://obsproject.com/download
01:49<truth2>If you're using either Debian's testing or unstable distribution, maybe you could do root$ apt install obs-studio

04:06<enyc>Spartan: I *can* say 2 things -- (1) bios/uefi-firmware update can affect/fix these things etc (2) Ryzen 's can benefit from particularly new linux kernel, though I'd have thought debian11 5.10 kernel would be new-enough myself
04:07<enyc>As 'gaming edition' laptop maybe it was windows-centric in testing etc. good question
04:08<Spartan>Is there any other things to take control of fans manually?

04:09<enyc>Spartan: there are ways, varies on system type, e.g. thinkpads have a particular acpi module
04:09<enyc>some systems expose via /sys and various fan control device classes etc etc

08:49<otisolsen70>Is there an easy way to take an existing folder and "lift it into memory" e.g. by mounting it as tmpfs or ramfs so that whatever content is in there is also moved into memory? Example, if I mount /tmp as tmpfs, then /tmp will just be an empty folder mounted in memory. But whatever files were in there on the /tmp folder on the file system is no longer visible. I want to "lift" the folder to memory in place. Is that possible?
08:53<ansgar>otisolsen70: cp files on a tmpfs and make sure no swap or so exists?
08:54<otisolsen70>ansgar, this is what I came up with: mv /root/mem /root/mem2 && mkdir /root/mem && mount -t tmpfs tmpfs /root/mem && rsync -vaP /root/mem2/ /root/mem

09:51<flatbed_dizzy_avenue>jm_ if you don't mind I'll tell you what I have understood so far, and then if you feel so inclined you can help me with the next step. So with rg .mp3 . | awk '{print $3}' awk reads the output of rg and then prints the 3rd element of each line which contains the .mp3 link. Now what I am thinking is that to get this to be usable by wget I need to strip off everything outside the " " marks (task 1) and then pass that list to wget (
09:51<flatbed_dizzy_avenue>). What doesn't seem to work for task 2 is just doing rg .mp3 . | awk ... | wget as wget doesn't seem to just read urls from stin properly. Is there a character I can put behind wget to make it read what came out of the pipe before? Or would some kind of Parentheses type syntax be used? like wget (rg .mp3 . | awk '{print $3}' | awk 'only the stuff inside "" ')
09:53<flatbed_dizzy_avenue>I am reading https://man.openbsd.org/awk.1 to get an idea what awk can do, but I am having some trouble applying the high level concepts explained there to this specific task.

The urls this prints are valid (if you manually select one and wget that it works), but the command doesn't work like this. It seem that it first tries to download empty lines for some reason, but then for the second part there is a Scheme missing that I don't really understand.
10:43<grove>flatbed_dizzy_avenue: Without any error checking (or anything else sane), it becomes something like `perl -nle 'use LWP::UserAgent; my $ua = LWP::UserAgent->new; if ($_ =~ m/enclosure url/) { ($u) = ($_ =~ m|"(https://.+\.mp3)"|); print "Getting $u\n"; $r = $ua->get($u, ":content_file" => "$..mp3"); }' rss`
10:45<grove>(The mp3 files ends up with strange numbers as their names, but at least the should be ordered - one of the sane (and probably simpler) things to add, is a counter in the loop, that names the files 1.mp3, 2.mp3, ...)
10:48<flatbed_dizzy_avenue>That one is exciting

10:55<grove>Well, that package has "Priority: optional", but it has 366 reverse depends (in Buster), so it's not unlikely to have been pulled in by something you've installed

11:38<flatbed_dizzy_avenue>| while read foo; do echo $foo; done I guess what I am having trouble wrapping my head around is that this "while read" is a condition as well as the means of iterating over the multiple lines of SDTIN. It checks whether it could read (exit status of read) something. If it could it will execute COMMAND (and that is echoing the current line). The part I didn't know is that read will "consider the job done" once it meets a "new
11:38<flatbed_dizzy_avenue> And that reading SDTIN once will deplete current line, so that if SDTIN get read again it will result in the next line being read.
11:39<Sqrt{not}>EBOFH: broadcast packets on wrong frequency
11:41<zoke>flatbed_dizzy_avenue: read is the condition for while... they are separate commands
11:41<flatbed_dizzy_avenue>yeah
11:41<flatbed_dizzy_avenue>but this only terminates if read "reads" something different on each iteration
11:41<flatbed_dizzy_avenue>that it does wasn't obvious to me
11:42<Sqrt{not}>not necessarily something different, but when read fails to read, the loop ends
11:42<imMute>flatbed_dizzy_avenue: iteration terminates when read returns a non-zero status code - as in it hits the end of the input. it'll read something different each iteration (assuming each line of the input is different anyway)

13:42<bumper>What about the application installed such as virtualmin
13:44<bumper>Thanks for the links i ll take my time to read all.
13:44<kveroneau>Debian upgrades are actually very painless, awhile back just for kicks, I installed the first ever version of Debian I used, 3.0 Woody, and followed the upgrade guide, and upgraded it all the way up to Debian 10 Buster with very minimal issues along the way. I was in the process of making a YouTube video to showcase this feat, but never got around to it and instead got distracted with xbill.
13:45<sarnold>kveroneau: lol xbill, nice
13:45<imMute>kveroneau: that would be a pretty cool video to watch!
13:45<kveroneau>Mind you, this upgrade test did have a minimal set of packages installed, I believe it had XFree86, and a basic Window manager. So, for more complex installations, such as with web and mail services, expect a bit more work to upgrade those config files.
13:45<sarnold>it reminds me of the "upgrading windows 1.0 to windows $latest" video from a few years back. the kicker on that video was the horrible colour scheme the guy choose, Hot Dog Stand or something like that, and how it survived into the future
13:46<kveroneau>sarnold, that was my inspiration for trying it in Debian actually. :)
13:46<sarnold>lol
13:46<sarnold>kveroneau: did you also start with Hot Dog Stand? :)
13:47<kveroneau>There's just not enough interesting Linux or Debian videos like this online. There's tons of "Windows through the years", but very little fanfare for Linux in this regard. I did however, make a "KDE through the years" video. :)
13:47<kveroneau>sarnold, thankfully no. I kept most cosmetic defaults.

13:49<tulpa>my VPS has Debian 11. I use mobaxterm to ssh in, using private/public keys. In my ~/.ssh there is only a known_hosts file. No authorized_keys file. Where could it possibly store the authorized_keys file?
13:49<kveroneau>KDE Through the years from 1.1 to 4.4.5, it's long as it's unedited and raw, but goes through each in some detail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AHOplevjAU

13:55<kveroneau>sarnold, I was trying to keep an overall theme.
13:56<imMute>tulpa: just in case you were wondering: the known_hosts file stores the server key fingerprints of the servers you connect to, so that on future connections it can detect if the key has changed (which can mean the connection is MITM'd)
13:57<tulpa>thanks. so i checked /etc/ssh/sshd_config. the key file is commented out so it should be in the default location if i am reading it correctly
13:58<tulpa>there is no id_rsa.pub in my /home/tulpa/.ssh/

18:38<kveroneau>So, now the question begging to be answered here is, which virtualization system is more secure, VirtualBox vs libvirt haha
18:38<rgammans>well, I'm trying to move off VirtualBox since it's not in debian by default
18:39<kveroneau>I used to use VirtualBox as my sole virtualization go-to, but last year I decided to convert myself to a more open source solution, and migrated everything over to libvirt/kvm.
18:40<kveroneau>rgammans, cool! It's well worth the investment in your time. I found libvirt to be leaps more powerful for experienced power-users than VirtualBox ever provided.
18:41<kveroneau>rgammans, oh, and do check out the stellar "virt-install" tool. :D
18:42<kveroneau>virt-install is great for creating repeatable installations in a single command-line you can share, like this: virt-install --connect qemu:///system --virt-type kvm --name $1 --location http://deb.debian.org/debian/dists/buster/main/installer-amd64/ --os-variant debian10 --disk size=4,pool=disks --memory 1024 --vcpu 2 --network network=default, model=virtio
18:42<kveroneau>Now you too can install a new Debian Buster VM with just a simple paste. :D

18:54<rgammans>yeah,.. I don't reslly have any prod workloads on Virtualbox. so i can rebuild images with provisioning scripts
18:54<kveroneau>Another way to migrate is to merely export an OVA appliance from VirtualBox, and import that into libvirt.
