08:34<grove>grawity: loop-aes doesn't ring any bell. As for whether `cryptsetup luksDump` recognises it: I don't have it here, so I can't test now. I can try in 6-10 hours
08:36<grawity>if you don't remember how the key was derived (or if it is indeed a random key that wasn't password-based at all), then bad news -- it's physically infeasible to bruteforce a 128-bit key
08:41<grove>I think I used something like `cryptsetup open /dev/<something> cryptdisk --type plain` (except that I probably didn't have to specify '--type plain' as it was probably the only choice back then), and as said I have an idea what the passphrase used was, I just want a tool that can "quickly" try variations of that - and if the data is lost that's not a big problem

08:50<Tj>grove: firstly try "cryptsetup isLuks $dev" to determine if it has a LUKS header. From what you've said it won't have a detached header, so that does point to it being a plain dm-crypt volume for which you'll need the original passphrase/key, and there is no *simple* way to speed up the testing of multiple passphrases (although there are some ways to parallelise that search)

11:18<SanchoPiensa>since initramfs images seem to be getting bigger over time, and the error "no space left on device" in my humble opinion it would really make sense, not to abort the process with an error, but to prompt a selection of older kernel images to delete, in order to free up space for new kernel images.
11:18<SanchoPiensa>Can we have it like that, please?
11:19<SanchoPiensa>and the error "no space left on device" keeps reoccurring, that should have read!

11:27<SanchoPiensa>Sqrt{not}: what is causing this error is the fact, that I have an own boot partition, that I have created ages, meaning several upgrades ago. I just upgraded a virtual machine with my webserver in it from squeeze to buster, and from buster to bullseye. And in bullseye my /boot partition finally ran out of storage.
11:28<SanchoPiensa>Sqrt{not}: no, I can unfortunately not provide you with any useful output, since I clicked it away, and after that rm *4.9* removed all kernel files fitting the pattern from /boot

11:31<SanchoPiensa>and ever since I installed it, after every single kernel update, I first have to manually remove older kernel versions in my /boot partition in order to free up space for the new version. Pretty pesky, I have to say...
11:32<SanchoPiensa>And nope, I do not want to reduce my other lvm volumes in order to be able to increase my /boot partition...
11:32<Sqrt{not}>SanchoPiensa, first, upgrading from squeeze to buster is a HUGE jump, and not advised. second, you can configure the update to keep only a predefined number of old kernel versions, and automatically delete the extras

11:59<ksk>Sqrt{not}: not the answer that you are looking for, but afaik the installer asks which kernel package to install, and this leads to either a) you only having one (and one fallback maybe?) kernel, or b) debian keepin all the old kernels.

12:01<Sqrt{not}>!buster su
12:01<dpkg>Starting with buster, su no longer overrides PATH by default, requiring that you use "su -" or "su -l" for login shells (which is not really a new thing at all...). See https://wiki.debian.org/NewInBuster#Changes for details.

In gnome, Settings->Displays->Night Light I toggle Night Light, manual schedule set to where it should be active and in the system tray it says it IS active but not visual changes occur. My laptop brightness keys also don't change visual output, so could be a common problem.
16:11<grawity>are you using x11 or Wayland? is any other similar tool active (like whatever was the Linux equivalent of f.lux in the past)?
16:12<grawity>you don't need to mess with color profiles, but iirc night light indeed works in a similar way so if you *do* have any color profile stuff already set up, it might conflict

16:36<Tas-sos_>I want to try to configure my raspbian to try to get a static local IPv4 address from router
16:37<Tas-sos_>the only way is this :
16:37<Tas-sos_>https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentation/computers/configuration.html#static-ip-addresses
16:37<Tas-sos_>?
16:37<Tas-sos_>because, I don't want to be specifi with
16:37<Tas-sos_>static routers
16:37<Tas-sos_>static domain_name_servers
16:37<sarnold>what's a "static local ipv4 address from the router"?
16:38<Tas-sos_>"properties" can a avoid this ? and set only `static ip_address=192.168.0.4/24` ?
16:38<Tas-sos_>I want to have a specific and same ip address for this machine
16:38<Tas-sos_>( after the configuration from machine - I also go to the router configuration page to set it also from there )
16:39<sarnold>so, you want the router to dhcp assign a specific ip address for the machine?
16:40-!-mezzo [~mezzo@176-141-171-88.abo.bbox.fr] has quit [Quit: leaving]
16:40<Tas-sos_>but in order to be as much as possible already for every case.. I also want to configure that in my machine
16:40<Tas-sos_>sarnold: yes
16:40<Tas-sos_>If I'm not wrong, there are 2 ways:
16:41<Tas-sos_>1) Configuration from router <--- the best and more "robust" option
16:41<Tas-sos_>2) Configuration from the OS
16:41<Tas-sos_>right ?
16:41<Guest4844>tas-sos_: too many lines. condense them next time.
16:42<sarnold>it really depends; if you configure it from the router, then the machine won't have an ip address if it boots and the router is down

16:42<sarnold>if you configure it on the os, then it'll have an ip address when the router boots, but if you move the machine to another network, it'll just start using the ip address you configured, rather than ask that new network for an address to use
16:44<Guest4844>wrt my night light, dimming issue: where would be a good place to investigate? graphics work great otherwise, even 3d.
16:45<Tas-sos_>sarnold: exactly... because I'm not sure about the network ( where I put this machine )
16:45<Tas-sos_>Could I configure my OS to "try to get" a specific IPv4 for any network if connected ?
16:45<sarnold>Tas-sos_: if you change networks often, then probably using dhcp and getting the number from the router is probably the right approach, yeah
16:46<Tas-sos_>If it cannot get this IPv4 ok, lets take everything else..
16:46<grawity>the client can try to request a specific address, I think it's related to the "reboot" option in dhcpcd
16:47<grawity>many routers honor it, some don't

19:36<kveroneau>You would have to, yes. It shouldn't be too difficult, but libvirt is a fairly complicated app. I have compiled qemu many times before. You might want to download the Debian source package, that way you can rebuild the package a bit easier.

19:40<kveroneau>k-man, if the version of libvirt in bullseye supports the feature, but just isn't enabled, the best way is to do a "apt-get source libvirt", update the build options in the debian/ control directory, then run "debuild -us -uc" to build a standard DEB package file you can install.
19:41<kveroneau>I actually update nginx using this method to the latest by doing: apt-get source nginx, download source tgz from nginx, copy in the new source over the one grabbed from apt-get, and run debuild -us -uc, and I now have the latest nginx in a nice DEB package.

19:42<dpkg>First, check for a backport on <debian-backports>. If unavailable: 1) Add a deb-src line for sid (not a deb line!); ask me about <deb-src sid> 2) enable debian-backports (see <bdo>) 3) apt update; apt install build-essential; apt build-dep packagename 4) apt -b source packagename 5) dpkg -i packagename-ver.deb To change compilation options, see <package recompile>; for versions newer than sid see <uupdate>.

In gnome, Settings->Displays->Night Light I toggle Night Light, manual schedule set to where it should be active and in the system tray it says it IS active but not visual changes occur. I have X11 running. Thanks.

21:48<anjan>hi all, I installed debian stable on my workstation a couple months ago. I was wondering if changing my repos to testing in the middle of a nonfresh install is supported?
21:49<anjan>I can debug issues but I dont know if changing the repos to testing is something you should only do on a fresh install
21:49<enyc>anjan: afaik you can do that at any time, just ... testing is testing, expect possible problems =) ... going from oldstable->testing is what I would expect issues with
21:50<anjan>I see
21:50<anjan>I will keep that in mind
21:50<enyc>anjan: as, in general, packaging isn't set up to handle more than 1 release away
21:50<anjan>I do love stable. I can pretty much expect my computer to not break
21:50<enyc>anjan: note, however, there is quite a lot in bullseye-backports now and using particular backports may be more sensible than moving wholly to 'testing'

21:51<anjan>enyc: ya, I couldnt find mpv in backports
21:51<anjan>should it be there soon?
21:51<enyc>anjan: you could file a debian bug to request it... however...
21:52<enyc>anjan: you may want also to learn that you can put bookworm (testing) in your deb-src lines in sources.list[.d/files]
21:52<anjan>enyc: I see, I saw that I shouldnt make a frankendebian
21:52<anjan>is apt designed to handle that?
21:53<enyc>anjan: well, by having only deb-src for testing, this only affects "apt-get source [package]" and "apt-get build-dep [package]" in short
21:53<enyc>anjan: yes
21:53<anjan>oh
21:53<enyc>anjan: then, in most cases, you can use the build system and make basic backports
21:53<anjan>oh I understand
21:54<themill>not a trivial backport in this case, however
21:54<anjan>since Im compiling from source on my stable machine, it will be compiled for my dependancies
21:54<enyc>anjan: yes, and I've had that work well for many cases
21:54<enyc>themill may know more about mpv specifically
