05:16<alan92>Hi, is there a repo to install Avidemux on Buster?
05:17<alan92>I've built it myself but there's no audio during playback
05:18<Anarka>is debian multimedia repo still a thing ? sounds like it's type of package
05:18<Anarka>it is deb-multimedia.org
05:20<jm_>!multimedia
05:20<dpkg>Debian's main repository has lots of great multimedia packages with more included in each release. Ask me about <search> to find them and <rfp> if something is not yet packaged. The old <deb-multimedia.org> has not been a "must have" repo for multimedia support for several releases; it now mostly contains poor quality packages or current Debian packages recompiled incompatible with other packages in Debian.

08:56<coc0nut>anyone expanded vm disk size in debian ? booted a live image to use gparted to resize (expand) the disk. but its just a new partition and cant be merged ?
08:57<coc0nut>do I have to mount it or somethign?
08:58<ksk>if it is a VM, why would you boot a live-image? Extending a partition, and creating a new partition are two different things.
08:58<coc0nut>I was thinking being logged in to a system disk, would lock the disk

08:58<coc0nut>and on gparted, the swap disk is between the disks i want to merge
08:59<coc0nut>what i did was resizing the disk from 60 to 100gb in virtualbox
08:59<ksk>soo, now you want to merge two existing partitons, and keep the data? that is a nono.
08:59<coc0nut>okok
09:00<ksk>I dont really get it. If you are talking about a virtualbox vm, then eh, stop the VM, and use virtualbox tools to do stuff? :o

09:00<coc0nut>im done in virtualbox.
09:00<ksk>!problem
09:00<dpkg>extra, extra, read all about it, problem is something that can be solved, fixed or worked around if properly described. A good thorough description of the problem, with detailed steps of how to reproduce the problem, the produced output, and the expected output, is the best start to discuss a problem.
09:01<coc0nut>in debian the old disk remains the same. but theres free space which i added in virtualbox. and i want to merge it.
09:01<coc0nut>if that made it clear? :p

13:17<masonbee>So the flow is grub menu, screen blacks, goes to text for password, and then plymouth splash a short time after password is enter
13:18<Sqrt{not}>so, um, is plymouth installed inside the encryped / or somewhere else?

18:00<jim_>Hi everyone. It's been a few years since I used IRC. I am a Linux useer and have since decided to stay with Debian only. I also am sticking with KDE. My first question is that I just upgraded to Bullseye on my Dell laptop. It did not go well. I have a dual boot with FreeBSD. I tried various things to updaate grub but cannot get the other OS to show up. Can I geeet any help?
18:01<somiaj>jim_: do you have the package os-prober installed?
18:02<jim_>yes and the other OS shows
18:02<jim_>but shows up twice
18:03<somiaj>I have found some hits that os-prober gets confused, another option is to make a custom entry just for that os
18:03-!-vdamewood [~vdamewood@0002b6dc.user.oftc.net] has quit [Quit: My MacBook Pro has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
18:03<jim_>I did find that it is installed on my sda1
18:03<somiaj>look in /etc/grub.d/40_custom or 41_custom, you can create a custom hook that will add your freebsd system to be bootable from grub
18:04<somiaj>you may have to look up in google what is needed for that
18:04<jim_>okay, where can I find the entries?
18:04<jim_>oh
18:05<somiaj>https://srobb.net/grub2.html
18:05<jim_>It had worked prior to my update from 10
18:05<somiaj>this seems to have some info
18:05<somiaj>yea, I'm not quite sure why it would work in 10 and not 11.
18:05<somiaj>I'm just pointing out a way you can get it to work, maybe others can help you debug os-prober, but google seems to suggest you are not alone in having issues with it and freebsd, though some of these were also present in 10
18:06<jim_>Do you know iif others had trouble upgrading from 10 to 11?
18:06<somiaj>https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/109272/add-freebsd-to-grub2-boot-menu
18:07<somiaj>there are often people who have trouble, but most it is very smooth. I personally didn't have an issue on any of my systems, but I also don't dualboot freebsd
18:08<jim_>thank you. I'll let everyone know when I get it working

19:07<BlueMatt>hmm, is it expected that APT::Default-Release "bullseye" prefers non-security over bullseye-security, effectively turning off security updates?
19:07<BlueMatt>I don't recall that ever happening with buster
19:08<somiaj>BlueMatt: can you provide the output of apt policy packagename of a package that does this?

19:09<somiaj>BlueMatt: also it sounds like you are trying to break debian, you shouldn't not need to set APT::Default-Release for stable, as you should not be mixing in packages from testing/unstable or other sources that would require such a setting
19:09<BlueMatt>https://0bin.net/paste/1ovCZg0n#RvxGQvdCXHo5xwg9kdqSf54Lk4mUTF36jiGiZd4c8GI

19:10<BlueMatt>I'm not sure what the purpose of it is, then :p
19:10<somiaj>but yes it does look like bullseye-security is now considered a different release than bullseye, unsure what this change is

19:11<somiaj>that is more meant for testing/unstable users who don't get security support through a saparate repo, stable users should not need to use that, and expect their system to be broken (or not work as designed) if they are in a situation they need that
19:11<BlueMatt>I dont have a buster machine handy anymore, but "n=bullseye-security", did buster set n=buster?
19:11<somiaj>I'm not sure if it is due to a change in apt, or a change in the way the name the security repo.
19:11<rails>it was buster/updates back then, wasnt it?

19:12<somiaj>yea it was buster/updates so it is probably due to the fact it is now a seperate name (like buster/main buster/contrib etc)
19:12<somiaj>the name was also a lot different the /updates was a sub-dirctory vs a seperate repo which apt considers a release

19:13<somiaj>you may need manually pinning if you really want to break your system this way. You should really learn proper ways to get newer packgaes into stable
19:13<BlueMatt>you really dont have to keep mentioning that, I'm well aware, I've been using debian for like 15 years now, thanks.

19:15<BlueMatt>yep, I'm quite farmiliar. of course there really isnt a "better" option short of (a) nagging a maintainer to do a backport into that repo, which happens sometimes, or (b) building packages by hand, which, like, well I'm using debian for a reason :p
19:16<somiaj>backporting a package yourself is often way better, due to dependencies.

20:17<blast007>many distros offer a live DVD if you want to just see how they work
20:17<somiaj>Though I think even a few debian devs are in favor making the non-free iso a bit easier to find, since it is getting harder and harder to get things to work nicely without non-free firmware.
20:17<cowboypenguin>Wangus: Well, I would suggest a reinstall either way. If you're having problems everywhere you look, it sounds like a broken install. Without knowing more, I can only recommend a reinstall of either Debian or another distro.
20:18<sarnold>but if your goal is to be able to buy a game in best buy and be playing it an hour later, probably windows is a better fit

21:43<jkc>So the issue isn't in whether grub can read the disk, you at least know that much now.
21:44<alexrelis>Calamares is quite smart. In my last install I set it to install with BTRFS and it actually made @ and @home subvolumes.

21:47<minimal>alexrelis: that "sounds" like a UEFI issue which would be unrelated to LUKS
21:47<alexrelis>jkc: Oh no way. Yeah I notices that when you install with Calamares you effectively get a different install than with d-i.
21:47<alexrelis>minimal: You know what? You're probably right.
21:47<minimal>alexrelis: is sounds like UEFI cannot find a "valid" ESP partition
21:48<jkc>Could also be that there's more than one boot profile in the firmware.
21:48<minimal>or else no valid EFI files inside the ESP partition
21:48<jkc>minimal: If he's booting to a grub prompt, then its reading the ESP and loading the grub efi executable from it.
21:48<alexrelis>During the install, I shut down my computer and now when I'm in my UEFI, I can't even use my internal keyboard. I have to use an external keyboard to mess around with the settings.
21:48<alexrelis>It's a coreboot distibution.
21:49<minimal>jkc: but he just said the got "BdsDxe: No bootable option or device was found." which is not a Grub prompt
21:49<jkc>He was talking about a grub rescue prompt previously.

21:49<minimal>jkc: yeah I know, I'm confused exactly what the problem is
21:50<alexrelis>jkc: Basically on the third boot, I entered my passphrase and instead of booting my system it went into a "grub>"
21:50<minimal>that error sounds like either UEFI did not find a valid ESP partition, or else something wrong with EFI vars, or something wrong with grubx64.efi file that Grub would place in ESP partition

21:50<jkc>If you're getting a grub> prompt, then UEFI has already exited the equation. grub was already loaded from the ESP and executed.

21:51<alexrelis>which looks like a grub rescue prompt. I then shut down the system, booted again and got the error BdsDxe No bootable option.
21:51<alexrelis>So the current error is BdsDxe.
21:52<alexrelis>Though I am able to boot my ventoy live USB which I believe is SysLinux based and it boots all my Linux ISOs.
21:52<minimal>alexrelis: so current problem is UEFI-related like I mentioned about.
