14:23<topfuel>Hi, this is so confusing :D For some reason a debian guest I have in virtualbox (linux host) keeps adding a second ip to the network interface :D Usually it is enough to just juse the network manager applet or nmcli, but now for some reason a second ip seems to pop up. Is this because of virtualbox somehow? My situation is I want to set static ip to it. When I set static ip in config and do "sudo systemctl restart networking.service"
14:23<topfuel>it actually works for like one minute. But after a minute a second ipv4 address pops up in ip a and I loose internet. What is going on lol?
14:24<topfuel>I never had issues like this on baremetal

14:28<tulpa>check your virtualbox config. how many networks/adapters did you assign
14:28<topfuel>and out of all the vms I run only this installl of debian acts like this so I suspect it is not because of virtualbox, just something with setting up the network inside the vm I guess
14:29<topfuel>I only have one
14:29<cpach>hi folks! what is a good strategy for making the console usable on a 4k monitor? currently my font is _tiny_

I can verify my other vms are working good with pfsense and connect to the net. A mix of OS'es ranging from haiku to windows. This is the last one I do not understand what is up.
14:37<topfuel>could add I do this to learn about networking.

14:52<topfuel>I think what I did wrong is I tried to set static ip by setting it in /etc/network/interfaces and disabling dhcp. Now when I want to correct that using the backups of those files i get this odd behavior. Also clicking the network manager applet just brings up "vpn connections"
14:52<topfuel>did i somehow break network manager by setting all ips manually?
14:56<topfuel>I kind of want to figure this out since this is how my raspberry started behaving, obviously not in a vm. I ended up reinstalling. But would be good to figure out what I am doing wrong since I seem to be able to recreate it :P

17:06<sazamoracl>It was the damm cpufrequtils I remeber that I installed it time ago.

17:07<somiaj>note, a text pastebin is prefered for pasting text, such as paste.debian.net or
17:07<somiaj>!termbin
17:07<dpkg>you can paste to termbin.com from terminal with redirections: try 'nc termbin.com 9999 < /path/to/file', or 'command | nc termbin.com 9999'
17:07<sazamoracl>somiaj: works perfect putting the fw on the root of the usb, I always do it for intel wifies, works like a charm.
17:08<somiaj>yea, I either skip that step (mostly because I like miniial base systems) or use the non-free images
17:08<somiaj>!microcode
17:08<dpkg>Microcode are instructions/structures for implementing high-level machine code within processors. The Linux kernel can load updated microcode on most x86 processors. Microcode patches for Intel and AMD64 CPUs are packaged for Debian as intel-microcode and amd64-microcode respectively; installing the relevant package is recommended to ensure system stability. Ask me about <non-free sources>. http://wiki.debian.org/Microcode
17:08<somiaj>anyways, I wonder if that got installed somehow during the kernel upgrade?
17:09<sazamoracl>somiaj: no i remeber being installed it when started the laptop, for some reason I always did it on my previous amd laptop but it looks that it is not neccesary on this intel. wow, works like a charm now.
17:09<celdronis>@sazamoracl thanks I need to re create the Deb usb 'cause I actually was looking for another distro to use
17:09<sazamoracl>what a nice friday : D
17:10<somiaj>celdronis: There are various ways to go about this. This is just one of the hurdles of using debian with hardware that needs non-free firmware. Anyways, just grab the firmware images, save yourself some grief
17:10<somiaj>!firmware images
17:10<dpkg>There are <live> system and <netinst> and DVD images containing non-free Debian <firmware> packages available from https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/current/amd64/iso-cd/ The images are "unofficial" because "official Debian" includes only 100% free software, but otherwise identical to the normal installer images and prepared by the same Debian Developers. Also you can use ' previously firmwared versions of the installer ', the if some fw-file it is missing, you simple unpack it from the deb package and paste it on the usb root or firmware folder. Thats all, tipicall with the intel wifies.

21:36<lhvf>Celdronis: I'd like more the another available to install/ to be installed session 'GNOME Flashback'. Or the fork of GNOME2 -- MATE Desktop Environment instead. It is better than 'GNOME (3) Shell' itself.. XFCE is also good, mainly if you have older PC. But XFCE under a new PC let it even more fast..

22:36<themill>apt-show-versions can have a reasonable go at it. When one package is in multiple releases, this is not a well-posed problem.

23:38<Gerowen>Anybody know why you can't screen capture anything that uses 3-D rendering? Example, OBS Studio can capture your display as long as you're not playing a game (OpenGL/Vulkan). VNC works unless the client is currently using 3D acceleration (my daughter is playing Roblox and I can't VNC into her laptop while it's open). I'm assuming it has something to do with Wayland/Pipewire, but I'm just wondering if it's a limitation I have to live with, or something
23:38<Gerowen>that can be worked around.
23:40<blast007>tried using Xorg instead of Wayland? Gnome, for instance, lets you select GNOME on Xorg from the login screen by clicking on the gear icon

23:54<Gerowen>blast007: I haven't actually, but that might work. It's not anything mission critical, just a curiosity, I know things like Pipewire are just now maturing to allow for things like this on Wayland.
